Kind of surprised, but good to see Azusa Pacific bringing back football. They will be playing DIII as opposed to DII. Article says Whittier also reinstating football as well.

I doubt we will see the CSU’s of Chico Bay/ SF State/ LB State/ Fullerton etc make a comeback, but this does give some more spots for kids in California to continue to play on. Maybe a few of the other privates (Menlo/Occidental etc.) bring it back down the road? I mean, even if it was DIIi, It would be cool to see the likes of St. Mary’s and Santa Clara bring back football on campus.

This is cool!…. But yes, hard to see all those other schools bring back FB due to the Cost…. Especially the Cal State Schools!….

It’s too bad, the one that hung on for a long time was Humboldt!…. They had a really nice program and one of the most magnificent venues to watch FB (Redwood Bowl) and the Whole town would come out for the games…..

ST Mary’s you mentioned is another great one, but there is no way they could generate the attendance and revenue needed to support FB…..

It’s too bad, because because those were all great places for kids to continue their dreams of playing FB…. Heck, I am old enough that when I was at Chico, me and my buddies went to every home game…. And we got to see Larry Allen play Twice who went to Sonoma state!..,.. 🤣

I hope St. Mary's brings it back. My first 3 semesters of college (2006 to 2007), I attended William Jessup University in Rocklin, but I ended up transferring to St. Mary's after that. During my final semester at Jessup, we had student transfer from SMC to Jessup because he had been offered a football scholarship to SMC but then they abruptly ended their program. So he transferred to Jessup from SMC and I did the reverse

Was ST Mary’s still playing FB in 2007?…. I thought thee dropped it before that?….

They did..i think they dropped it in 2006..he transferred in i think fall of 2006..which makes sense since that is football season...i left WJU spring 2007.
ST Mary’s last season of FB was 2003, the program was dropped in early 2004…. 🤣

Correct- I used to officiate football for all of those schools ( Chico- SF State- Hayward St- Santa Clara- St. Marys etc.) but when they all dropped their programs I decided it was time to get out as our association was basically left with only the J.C.s. Would be nice if the schools brought football back but I don't see that happening.

Thank you for your service! We always need good dedicated officials.
