Bellarmine v Del Oro

CCS! CCS!

I'm following the play by play on the Mercury News live feed, and think maybe this one was worth the $9.99 streaming fee...

Excellent game tonight. Two of the best teams in NorCal. Here were a few thoughts I had:

Bergstrom and Bringuel in the middle for Bellarmine will make them hard to run on. Both are very solid players with some size.

The Bellarmine kicker, Cole Bunce, could be the best kicker I see this year. Easily had touch backs on every attempt and got good hang time on punts. Did have a missed extra point.

Like Rmbr26 said, I was confused why Macauley wasn't more involved. Wasn't a great night for Martig, but he really competes and took a big hit on the last drive before the final touchdown.

Udoffia is a difference maker at WR. Not sure he is a definite Pac-12 guy despite Colorado commitment, but he is one of the top wide outs in NorCal this year.

I always thought you could just plug guys in and Del Oro would always be able to run the ball. They lack a dynamic runner this year though and it shows. Very interested to see how the ground game looks come Halloween.

I can't recall a better atmosphere and game than last night. The honor bowl and tradition that DO puts on is what makes this such a great place to live. I just wanted to say that because in these times sometimes our priorities get out of line. I had the pleasure of rapping with TR who will blow just about anybody away with his passion for statistical information and SJS football. Missed Rick and G61 but there is a next time.

As for the game, DO is very good. Lets make sure people understand that. This is a team that I think has a good chance of knocking off Folsom in league play. Good rangy QB, dynamic playmaker, solid core, and competes on every down. They do have some gaps like the running game.

Bellarmine is like a machine. Efficient and keeps the chains moving. Downhill all the time and deceptively fast. Best kicker I've seen as well streak. Insane foot. I was looking at there schedule and with exception of Serra and Valley Christian (who plays nobody) this team could run the table. Serra plays a pretty solid Notre Dame (sherman oaks) today so it will be interesting to see how good they are. Don't be surprised to see the Bells stay near the top.

Great game last night. It was definitely gut wrenching for DO fans and players. DO has proven two things in their last two games. They can play with some very competitive teams yet, as TR said, they can't "close out" against the competitive teams. DO in the past has been able to this. Especially at home. In the first half against the Bells, DO's defense seemed to be playing on their heals waiting to see who would get the ball in the back field. In the second half, DO upped their defensive physical game by attacking the line of scrimmage and then, while in the back field, make up their minds who had the ball. They shut down the Bells pretty good in the second half. Nevertheless, the team with the less turnovers usually wins close games. The Bells didn't have one turnover while DO had one turnover that basically lost the game for them. The Bells quarterback is a great athlete. He made some clutch plays at the end of the game. His last two throws were spot on, but the biggest play came when the ball was hiked over his head, and with 4 DO defenders chasing after him, he picks up the ball and somehow eludes all the defenders chasing after him and gets the ball back to the line of scrimmage. Great athletes do marvelous things against good athletes. All in all, great game. These tough preseason games will definitely help out the Golden Eagles in the SFL.

First half, Del Oro wasn't stopping the Bells offense at all. The second half, the Bells couldn't move the ball. I think Rick and I counted 4 or 5 three and outs. Coach Taylor figured something out, made the proper adjustments and it seemed like the Golden Eagles were in Bellarmine's backfield the entire 2nd half.

The turning point was the sack and fumble the Bells caused early in the 4th (I believe). DO complicated the mistake by committing a personal foul and suddenly a team that couldn't do anything offensively had the ball 1st and goal from the 9 down 24-21. On 3rd and goal, Martig scored on a QB keeper around the right end. That change of events was huge.

To their credit, DO responded with a nice long drive capped by a super nice 30+ yard TD run by Dalton Gee.Up 31-27 and around 3:31 remaining, the Golden Eagles had the Bells right where they wanted them.

But give Troy Martig and the Bells a ton of credit. They only managed one drive the entire 2nd half and it just happened to be the last and most important drive of the game. They spread the field and had a lot of trouble protecting Martig -- but made every single back-against-the-wall play that they had to make to win the game.

DO had numerous chances to close out the game , especially on that final Bellarmine possession, but they just could not get it done. On several occassions, they had Martig in 2nd or 3rd and 14+ situations and couldn't hold him. Martig made plays with his feet to escape pressure and make something out of nothing. He made numerous clutch throws with pin point accuracy. We're talking 17-20 yard deep out throws just over the defenders out stretched arm. One play that will largely be forgotten on that last drive was the shotgun snap that flew right over Martig's head. What could have been a 15+ yard loss only resulted in a 4-5 yard loss due to Martig's elusiveness and speed.

Lastly, a big key to that game-winning drive may have been the timeout situation. Many of us were confused as to what actually happened, but facing a 4th and 10 with around 40 seconds remaining, either the referees granted the Bells a 4th timeout or Del Oro inexplicably called one when the clock would have continued to run. Earlier in the drive, the Bells had called 2 timeouts (1 to get Martig back in the game after he came off the field with an injury) and they had used one on a prior drive. I would love to know what exactly occurred, but if it was DO that called that timeout on 4th and 10 -- what a huge mistake.

All in all, it was a great game. It really boiled down to Bellarmine making 1 big play on defense and converting 1 clutch drive and Del Oro -- again -- unable to close an opponent out. The ability to close out games really separates the good teams from the average ones. So far this season, the Golden Eagles have lost 2 games they could have won and Bellarmine showed that it is a team that can close out when the opportunity presents itself.

First half was Bells. More O production and I give them the edge on D. DO made the better 2nd half adjustments.

I know, I was just giving you a hard time. I saw the game. Both teams are really, really good. DO's passing game is impressive.

I only wish that whoever was the director of the broadcast would stick with the higher camera instead of trying to show the field-level views all the time. You really can't see anything as far as gains or losses from that viewpoint.
