First half, Del Oro wasn't stopping the Bells offense at all. The second half, the Bells couldn't move the ball. I think Rick and I counted 4 or 5 three and outs. Coach Taylor figured something out, made the proper adjustments and it seemed like the Golden Eagles were in Bellarmine's backfield the entire 2nd half.
The turning point was the sack and fumble the Bells caused early in the 4th (I believe). DO complicated the mistake by committing a personal foul and suddenly a team that couldn't do anything offensively had the ball 1st and goal from the 9 down 24-21. On 3rd and goal, Martig scored on a QB keeper around the right end. That change of events was huge.
To their credit, DO responded with a nice long drive capped by a super nice 30+ yard TD run by Dalton Gee.Up 31-27 and around 3:31 remaining, the Golden Eagles had the Bells right where they wanted them.
But give Troy Martig and the Bells a ton of credit. They only managed one drive the entire 2nd half and it just happened to be the last and most important drive of the game. They spread the field and had a lot of trouble protecting Martig -- but made every single back-against-the-wall play that they had to make to win the game.
DO had numerous chances to close out the game , especially on that final Bellarmine possession, but they just could not get it done. On several occassions, they had Martig in 2nd or 3rd and 14+ situations and couldn't hold him. Martig made plays with his feet to escape pressure and make something out of nothing. He made numerous clutch throws with pin point accuracy. We're talking 17-20 yard deep out throws just over the defenders out stretched arm. One play that will largely be forgotten on that last drive was the shotgun snap that flew right over Martig's head. What could have been a 15+ yard loss only resulted in a 4-5 yard loss due to Martig's elusiveness and speed.
Lastly, a big key to that game-winning drive may have been the timeout situation. Many of us were confused as to what actually happened, but facing a 4th and 10 with around 40 seconds remaining, either the referees granted the Bells a 4th timeout or Del Oro inexplicably called one when the clock would have continued to run. Earlier in the drive, the Bells had called 2 timeouts (1 to get Martig back in the game after he came off the field with an injury) and they had used one on a prior drive. I would love to know what exactly occurred, but if it was DO that called that timeout on 4th and 10 -- what a huge mistake.
All in all, it was a great game. It really boiled down to Bellarmine making 1 big play on defense and converting 1 clutch drive and Del Oro -- again -- unable to close an opponent out. The ability to close out games really separates the good teams from the average ones. So far this season, the Golden Eagles have lost 2 games they could have won and Bellarmine showed that it is a team that can close out when the opportunity presents itself.
