Cameron Skattebo thrives on national stage

I’ve been telling people since 2018 that the kid is legit.

I was shocked when he didn’t garner more recruiting attention, especially after a head turning, dominant Junior season at Rio Linda, then was ecstatic that Sac State was able to land him.

I was bummed when Taylor left for Stanford, which also caused Skat to want to leave. But am again ecstatic (in hindsight) that he found the right landing spot at ASU and for a head coach that knew how to leverage Cam’s extremely versatile skill set.

Aside from his rushing and receiving talent, Cam has taken snaps at QB and even punted on numerous occasions. The kid is the literal walking definition of a “football player”.

Like everyone else (wrt player evaluations), I’m often wrong but I did successfully predict Elijah Dotson as a kid capable of playing on Sunday’s (he made it for a short spell) and I predicted the same thing about Cam not long into his tenure at Sac State. And since that time he’s only strengthened that belief via his continued impressive play at ASU.

I think yesterday’s performance against a very talented Texas defense might have increased his stock to a point that he’ll be a day 2 draft selection. Jeanty will likely go in round one, and Cam could go in round 3, maybe even late round 2 if his combine measurables go really well.

Whomever lands him is getting a gem of a football player.

The kid is flat out fun to watch play. Reminded me of CMC in many ways.

In a recent interview with Dan Patrick, Cam cited the Christian McCaffrey comparison since he became the first player since Christian to rush for over 1500 yards and accumulate over 500 receiving yards in the same season.

Cam then cited Marshawn Lynch, Mark Ingram, and Le'Veon Bell as influences in which he tries to implement pieces of their game into his own.

In the past I've compared him to a more elusive, mobile, yet mini version of Mike Alstott. But I also see shades of Christian McCaffrey wrt his versatility and football IQ.

Yes, Christian is a freakish player that nobody truly compares to in terms of pure ability, but Cam just might be a lesser version of him which is still pretty damned good. A lesser but more physical version.

Cam is another in a long line of great HS players to come out of NorCal and why I love HS ball so much to this day. When you see some of these guys play locally for a few years then see them star at the next level and even the next level after that for a few of them — it really makes you smile.

From Troy Taylor to Aaron Garcia to Jason Fisk and Tony Cline to Randy Fasani to Donte Stallworth, Onterrio Smith, Lance Briggs and DJ Williams, to Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers to Syd’Quan and Shaq Thompson to Devontae Booker to Devante Adams to Jared Goff, etc, etc, etc. The list is seemingly endless.

Circling back to Cam Skattebo, I first saw him play in person at Whitney HS for the Section title against Casa Roble during his junior year. The kid scored 7 TD’s in the game and made it look way too easy. While you can never know for sure, I left that game speechless believing that this kid could one day be doing what he’s doing now. And that is being talked about and revered by the Natl’ media after a stellar performance against a top 4 team.

Again, that’s one of the reasons I love HS ball so damned much.

Cameron is a story about perseverance and burning desire. After that huge junior season we did everything to get him noticed. He went to event after event, 7 on 7's with gamefit, camps, showcase days, etc. His performances dominated like he normally did, but he was either too short, not fast enough, small school, didn't have grades for Ivy league, etc. He actually fell victim to overtraining prior to his SR year to the point that I shut him down for 2 months from any activity on campus. Then he played the final 6 games of the season with a separated shoulder. Playing the way he does, that's a problem. He rushed for 1700 yards and had a "down year". At that time, I firmly believe Sac St was the move. He needed them. He looked at it as an opportunity and ran with it. I don't believe he had the ability to sit and watch for a year or two at a huge school. He grew and grew and eventually outgrew Sac St. Those guys were excellent for him and knowing Cameron, he probably wouldn't have left Troy Taylor, that's his level of loyalty. When the door opened when he left for Stanford he took it. He's never been afraid to work, never backed down from a challenge, has not forgotten where he came from, and is doing all of this HIS way. Us from the RL area are used to this. It all looks the same. The 2nd half of the Peach Bowl matched the 2nd Half of the NorCal game in 2018, halfback pass included. We are all proud of him and so happy that he's finally getting his due. He is brash and confident and earned every bit of this through his determination and willingness to do anything to get here. What you are seeing on TV, that's who he is. He is exactly what you pray for from the underdog. I have ZERO reason to doubt that he will be a star in the NFL.

You can't teach desire and that "chip" he lives with daily. I would take a kid like that all day. He's been a fighter from day 1 because he never has passed any look test or metric. Been a great story and its just startingTR!

Hes amazing! A great joy to watch and definitely easy to root for!

Im curious to see if he's able to make it the next level where's everyone is a step faster, bigger and stronger.

He reminds me of former U of A great Scooby Wright. GREAT college player who was undersized (and perhaps a step slow) also and was himself under recruited who's talents never translated to the NFL.

See, I don’t see how he never passed the “look” test. The kid has always looked like a football player to me since the 1st time I saw him. At every level thus far he’s looked like a man playing against boys. He’s got mini-Earl Campbell legs!

Dudes have never been able to tackle him. Whether it’s his elusiveness or power. The kid always runs under control. He’s quick, shifty, and possesses what many believe to be the most important skills for a RB — balance and vision. His balance is as good as I’ve seen. And that’s what allows him to break off runs, as well as get the tough yards in short yardage situations.

The kid has always been extremely skilled. He’s not a late bloomer. He’s as multidimensional as one gets. He can do almost anything. Pass, block, run, catch, kick. Whatever is needed.

IMO, his balance, low-center of gravity, IQ, and pass catching skills are going to easily translate to the NFL. But like any player, he needs to go to the right team that understands how to maximize his skill set.

Lastly, in a league where tackling has gone the way of the dodo bird for numerous reasons, his physicality will also translate. Half of most defenses aren’t going to want to tackle him once he’s in open field.
