CCS Div III: Monterey vs Archbishop Riordan

Monterey definitely came to play, but Riordan seems to have weathered an early storm. Two fouls on Ordonio hurt Monterey. A buzzer beater three by Ugbaja pulls Riordan to within two at the end of one, 20-18.

Ordonio scores in the paint at the buzzer to put Monterey up 32-25 at the half. Sloppy but fun game. Pretty good crowd came up from Monterey. Mohanid Adam with 10, Mohammed Adam 9, Ordonio 8. 8 for Je'Lani Clark.

This game is slipping away from Riordan. They kept within 3 or 4 until the last few minutes of the third quarter, where they trail by 10, 50-40.

Je'Lani Clark doing his best to keep Riordan in the game. Trail by 7 at 6:39.

Now the game is slipping away from Monterey. Big three from the corner by Oropeza to pull Riordan to within two, 52-52 at 4:53. It's LOUD.

Crusaders storm back and take 1st lead of game. 55-52?Riordan. 2:54 to go in game

James Chun three puts Riordan up 55-52 at 3:30. Clark has assisted on the last three Riordan baskets. Monterey looks out of whack.

Crusaders hold Monterey to 6 points in the fourth quarter. Je'Lani Clark with 23 points.

Congrats to the Crusaders, rookie head coach Joey Curtin and his staff on an exciting comeback to take the CCS D3 title-its 15th CCS Basketball Title overall!
Coach Curtin stuck with his game plan of tight man-to-man and going 11 deep in his rotations throughout the game and withstood a furious Monterey attack through 3 quarters. The defense turned it up a notch as they were down 10 to start the 4th. Ultimately, that was the deciding factor as Monterey did not have the same bounce and shots were coming up short in that crucial 4th quarter.
I have to admit, I was at a loss when Coach Buck was let go and did not give coach Curtin his just due. This team suffered season-ending injuries to 2 players and others nursed injuries during the grueling WCAL season. Some close losses and some stinkers came along the way - but they stuck with their process. Gotta give props to a fellow Crusader brother. Job well done!
Future looks bright for the program as 3 sophs, and 7 jrs return with the experience and confidence in being a defending Section champion. Top that off with players from a solid JV team and the twin 6-7 and 6-9 transfers - this team should compete in the upcoming seasons.
Good luck in NorCals!

Agree with J wholeheartedly. I never agreed with what happened to RB, but wasnt to the point of abandoning my alma mater. Although , I havent made it out this year, wanted to extend congrats to Joey. I know this was the proverbial ‘dream job’ for him, and like his predecessors, has brought home a CCS title to his alma mater. What every Riordan hoops alum is waiting for now is the coveted League title to come home. And to build a program that can sustain and be the preeminent program in the SFC/SMC. Tonite though, congrats to him and his coaching staff and to the players for returning Riordan back to the top. It looks like theyve laid a solid foundation moving forward.

Give Coach Curtin props, he has been the best developmental coach at Riordan for a long time.

He payed his dues and brought his passion to work every day this season.

The best thing he did the 1st first season as Head Coach, he gave the guys the passion and belief they could win

Good win. And the future does look Bright at 175 Phelan. Some really good talent in pipeline... its gonna be interesting how norcals are gonna play out...im D3...

Watched Mission last Wednesday...Riordan takes King of the City✊
We will never know. Actually University is probably King of City. Followed by S.I. Toss up between Riordan and Mission. Although competitive amongst each other, overall a down year in City.

NorCal DII is loaded with some very good teams IMO. Whoever comes out with the Title - it will be well deserved. SPSV has gone through a tough schedule and Riordan will have a huge challenge as it travels to Vallejo this Wednesday. Not familiar with SPSV and many of the teams here, so let's open up the discussion.
Hope the call goes out to former Crusader HC, Rich Buckner, as his SM-B Panthers played SPSV THREE times this season. I'm sure he can provide a good scouting report.
