CH embarrassed MD 102-54 in the southern open division. Do any of the Norcal open teams have a realistic shot at beating this team?

I wrote earlier this year that I thought if Asiasi played for DLS they might be able to hang. He's been away from the game awhile but at 6'5 260 and incredible agility it would be a huge lift. Without him they are just a very good HS team but not an elite nationally ranked team. DLS will score against Chino because they give up open looks but the problem is Chino doesn't care if you score 80 because they will most likely get 100.

Here is what would need to happen.

1. Chino star Lonzo Ball gets into foul trouble like last year against SRV.
2. Chino Ball brothers all have really off nights shooting.
3. DLS controls tempo like Bishop Monty did against Chino. You can't turn it over and give up layups/dunks.
4. DLS shoots 45% or better from 3pt land and makes at least 14.

Its not impossible, but the odds are certainly not in your favor. I've been watching these games for a long time and I can't recall too many larger favorites coming in. (Maybe some of those Dominguez teams back in the day) Chino hills would really have to lay an egg.

I don't see any chance... But ya never know. After all, SRV did it last year. That's why they play the games. :)

Of course, this year's Chino Hills would beat last year's Chino Hills like a drum.

Biggest differences:
1) Overall maturity and experience of those who were around last year. Much tougher mentally, too. NOTHING bothers them.
2) The youngest Ball, being a freshman, wasn't there last year. And he might end up being as good or better than the senior Lonzo when all is said and done.
3) Another freshman, 6'9" Onyeka Okongwu, is a total beast whom I'm certain will be a high-4 star or a 5-star in the coming years.

Yeah they are brutal but you are right kiddmann. That is why they play the game! SRV win was huge.

LL & Kidman: Totally different Chino Hills team, totally different circumstances than last year. I sure hope the SRV faithful are not under the assumption that they slated the team that is now the nations #1 team. DLS has no chance. Even if they get the football kid back. Cant compare Ratino to a super athlete/NBA pro like Lonzo Ball

I'm rooting for DLS to win NorCal, but should Sparty get beaten, either Sac or Moreau *could* *mayyyyyyyyyyyyyybeeeeeeeee* provide a more interesting/entertaining game simply because they might be more likely to go ahead and try to beat Chino at their own game and runnnnnnnnn!

Maybe they catch lightning in a bottle and provide an amazing game with 270 points scored or more, maybe they get whipped 138-65, who knows, but it'd be fun to see the boundaries get stretched like that... All the cards would have to fall in the NorCal team's favor, but it would be fun to see, more fun than DLS or whomever trying to find a way to slow those guys down.

What gets lost in SRV's win last year was a smaller venue and their large cheering section? It created a better home court advantage than anyone will get at Sleep Train this year.

I've been reading on here for months that SRV's win doesn't really matter because if it's not the open division it's just JV basketball, they only won because Lonzo Ball fouled out, this years Chino Hills team is not the same team as last years team and now the smaller venue gave them a better home court advantage and I'm sure I'm missing some other reasons. How about that group of kids and coaches had a goal starting in pre-season and played for each other all year long. When Lonzo Ball fouled out it was a 1 point game with a little over 3 minutes left in the game. The game went back and forth all game long. We will never know what the outcome would've been if Lonzo had not fouled out. Lonzo is a great player and will probably be 1 and done unless he decides to stay and play with his brother for one year at UCLA. SRV had 3 players with double doubles and 5 players in double figures and played their best basketball when the stakes were the highest. I know it's hard for some of the haters on this board to give credit where credit is due but the fact is SRV played the team that was in front of them and they beat them. Most of you know who I am but for those that don't my name is Kevin Smith. I don't hide behind screen names and I don't come on this board to blast 17 & 18 year old kids.

I wasn't diminishing anything. I was pointing out a fact that will be different for a NorCal team playing them this year.

SRV was a very good, experienced team led by good guard play.

Yeah I watched that SRV game and they were amazing. One of the great all time games.

Guys this is HS basketball and anything is possible. Oak Ridge was huge underdogs to nationally ranked Mater Dei and they smoked em back when Ryan Anderson was their. Hell OR girls team was even bigger under dogs to long beach poly and they blasted them.

The ball brothers are volume shooters. Lonzo has the most broken J I've seen. They have off nights like they did against bishop Monty and things can get interesting fast.

Larry, I respectfully disagree. I'm very good friends with the oak ridge coaches who coached that game. Oak Ridge/Mater Dei boys game in 2005 was a massive upset on paper. Ryan Anderson was a 6'7 junior that year and was nothing compared to the 6'10 dominant beast he became his senior year. OR's best player hands down was Ryan Moya 6'3 football kid who played tight end at ucla. Even the CIF program stated that the game was a completely lopsided matchup with perennial national power Mater Dei and first timer Oak Ridge. Most people thought they were going to lose by 30-40 points. MD averaged 89.5ppg that year. OR held them to 44 winning by 16 and sealing an argument for the biggest upset in California State Championship history. Btw, the girls win in 2010 against LBP was not at the same level. LBP was not at full strength.

Chino Hills 2016 would beat Chino Hills 2015 team by 75 points. Lol

I think Folsom and DLS would give them the best games followed by Sheldon and Sacramento. Both MC's would get routed.

I understand your point. Sorry I put your comments in the same group with the others. There were a lot good games last year and I hope we get the same this year.

I'm confused with what you are saying. My point was anything can happen. OR had no business on paper beating MD. Anything is possible in HS basketball. I was at that OR game and they had basically 3 D1 players. The PG Hiram Thompson went on to Hawaii as well. Moya could have played college hoops. Ryan Anderson was an out of shape 6"7 highly skilled shooter his Jr year.

I don't think folsom would have any chance against Chino. Way to small. Same with Sheldon. DLS to me is the only team with the discipline and players to ugly it up enough to keep it close. But without Asiasi that is highly unlikely.

All six teams you just named would get routed if they don't come up with a great game plan, and execute it darn near to perfection. But this is all speculative. Anything can happen, that's why the games are played.

None of these teams can play with Chino. Chino makes you play their style! Nobody has even been able to come close to stopping them. And they have played some of the best in the country.

I watched that game from start to finish and SRV did exactly what they needed to do to beat Chino--take care of the ball and score in transition. What Kevin won't mention, because he is for all the kids and not just his own, is that his son Keith ran the show that night for SRV and played beautifully. Is Chino better this year? Of course, they got older and added some key ingredients, but that doesn't take anything away from an SRV team that did what they needed to do last year to get a D-1 State Title. People should just acknowledge and enjoy that accomplishment, and really enjoy what Chino is currently doing. It is special!

Nobody has even been able to come close to stopping them
They have had some close encounters. They snuck by a 19-9 Jefferson 91-90. Monteverde 83-82,patrick school 66-60 in OT, foothills christian 85-83 and most recently 71-67 to A Bishop Montgomery team that was in control of that game for most of it. Even in closing seconds they got hose by the clock/refs. Go watch final 40 seconds.

They basically play a cherry picking at the park style. Why not keep 2 players back with the 2 Ball brothers. Have 3 play them 3 on 3 on the offensive end (more of a bonus if you have shooters) and run the shot clock , which would limit their fast break opportunities and possessions.

The problem with playing Chino Hills is that most coach's think the can shut down the Ball Bros. That's impossible since most games they are 80% of the offense. Out of the 3 he is the only one who doesn't care about points he destroys you with his assist and rebounds. If you can keep him from that triple double you might have a shot. 2. Multiple ball handlers, Redondo Union was in the game until very late but their shot selection went to the birds. Bishop Monty just lost its composure, which is unusual in a game they were totally in control. Stop the 80 foot post entry past from lonzo to his bro, that will take a team with a solid physical presence. They are not deep. In tough games they play 7 guys. Lastly they are not that great defensively as a team. Lonzo is ridiculous, and their big freshman controls the paint, everyone else is average on defense. Lonzo Stats are the key, if he gets a triple double, plus 6 steals, 4blocks enjoy your 40pt loss.

80 percent of his rebounds/assists come from defensive rebounds then 80 foot pass. Stop the cherry picking and you have the chance. I've watched them play several times and I've seen their interviews. They admittedly run zero offense. They call it football on the basketball court. They will press 2-2-1. with melo and liangelo being the top guys if the ball breaks half court they circle back and Liangelo stands under the basket and Melo goes to the corner and they wait for the pass while the other 3 play 3 on 5. I would be curious to see what their shooting percentage is in a half court set vs the touchdown plays. Again i say go ahead and play them 3 on 3 on offense and 5 on 5 on defense , minimizing the homerun, and you have a chance

HEAT and I have our differences but I'm absolutely on board with what he is saying. They are so athletic and gifted that they can cherry pick and grab 9 out of 10 hail mary passes. Then it becomes layup and dunk city once you get into that routine and start pressing. They are long and people try and throw over the top. They have the personnel to do this. Few teams do. Maybe none.

Also its been my experience that a bigger court like Arco can help a team to break the press. These cracker jack box HS gyms can really help an athletic quick team cover a lot of space. The passing lanes become non existent.

1124bell: If all this board does is bash kids then why do you come on and read the posts? Better yet why are you a subscriber if it's so bad? Great win for SRV last year, but the fact still remains they were not even close to being the best team in Nor Cal last year. We now have a "Open Division". That's where the top teams play!

1st my name is Kevin Smith not 1124bell and you know that, 2nd my post didn't say all this board does is bash kids it said I don't bash 17 & 18 year olds which you do and hide behind a screen name, 3rd I subscribe because there a lot of people on this board that have positive things to say about the kids and share constructive feedback without trying to tear kids down like some including yourself, 4th you have never heard me say that SRV was the best team in Nor Cal, 5th just because they weren't qualifiers for the open division it doesn't take away the fact that that group of kids and coaches won a state title for their school for the first time in over 100 years. So as much as you hated my son the fact remains that he was a part of a special season with a special group of kids and coaches and they will have those great memories for the rest of their lives. Like I told you last year my number is 925-699-4435 if you have anything to say to me, about me or anyone in my family call me and talk to me man to man instead of hiding behind a screen name on this board.

I thought the SRV team last year was fun to watch. Well managed on the sideline and on the court. Their gym was electric. It seems to me any victory at the league and state level takes grit, chemistry, guts, some luck. Winner and losers alike remember their finals, especially young people and their schoolmates. Credit for such success is deserved.
