CIF is looking very hard at delaying the start of all high school sports until Jan. 1, and will be making an announcement in late July.

One plan, which may be the favorite, is to have the fall and winter sports' seasons run concurrently in the winter -- which would mean that athletes would have to choose between winter sports and fall sports. The biggest conflicts would be between football and both soccer and basketball for boys, and volleyball and basketball for girls.

There would also be a significant facilities' crunch, as schools would need to arrange practice and game times for up to nine programs (three levels of volleyball, three levels of boys' basketball, two levels of girls' basketball and wrestling). This of course would be especially difficult for schools with just one gym, and there are more than you think.

Another option is to have fall sports run in January and February, winter sports in March and April and spring sports in May and June.

I don't know anything about the details, but it would seem unlikely that practices would be allowed over the Christmas break, so presumably practices would begin Jan. 1, with games to follow two weeks later.

Imo..Not enough officials. Many football officials also do basketball.

There are several options on the table, but the one clear message from the CIF and NCS commissioner in a recent zoom meeting was that they plan on having 3 separate seasons of sports, period. How that will happen is still up in the air and nothing will be determined before the July 20th meeting.

I think that having sports run at the same time is a bad idea. Not only facilities would be an issue but small schools would have to choose what sport to field because they simply don't have the numbers to support all those sports at one time.
Many refs officiate both sports so there probably would be availability issues. Some coaches in a few situations coach different sports and it would be a conflict.
As a basketball coach I wanna see a football season as well and would rather see a short hoop season to give fall sports a chance than nothing at all. Take away non conference games and only have league and playoffs if needed. It would suck but its something.
