CN vs MC - The Match Up Everyone Expected and Many Haven't Accepted

Despite the criticism of both Marin Catholic and Cardinal Newman dropping down to NCS DIV, it's the match up everyone *secretly* wants to see. Both teams are coming off hard fought comeback wins and are vying for the top spot in DIV. Which team will reign supreme?

Everybody accepts it,but the feeling seemed to be that both teams would just blow through everyone else in D4 ,like 50-0 each game, that it was going to be a cakewalk for them to meet in the final.Moreau and Fortuna showed that that was far from the case.

I would have rather seen one of them stay D3 as I think they are both better than Campo and Analy. MC could have avenged last years final loss to Campo. I don't see CN putting up 35, MC gave up the most all season to a game Moreau squad at 27 (+3 missed extra points). I give CN that - but they wont stop MC offense 38-28 Marin Catholic

There was at least one coach I can think of (won't mention names) that most certainly did NOT accept it. Cardinal Newman played sloppy against Fortuna. They are going to have to clean it up in order to beat MC. I see a close game with Newman coming out victorious.

Im going CN 35-31 in this game, MC will shoot themselves in the foot with some sloppy plays and penalties late in the game......I know there will be a couple of third and longs where MC needs a stop and has CN cornered where MC DL will miss the sack and Brookshire will slip out and scramble for a huge first down........this is usually how MC defense gets beat in big games

Very good assessment guys. I think both teams will play better this week. Newman got slapped in the face but found enough in the tank to win. I think Newman would have been scary good had they not lost Rubattino to that leg injury earlier in the year. Hard to match up with an athletic 6"4 wide out. Btw, any word on his status? Even with that being said Newman has such a dynamic playmaker in Brookshire that I would be up at night if I was the MC coach with cold sweats trying to figure out a plan. The weather is suppose to clear up by Friday so Saturday night looks perfect. Game is on field turf which helps out a good runner like Brookshire. The players need to show up for Newman. If Ortola, Brookshire, and Wallace have big games I like Newman 42-30. But they have to shine. I never doubt MC.

I think both teams were looking to the finals a little too early and could have been upset. This is the best section finals in the NCS, should be a great game.
CN Defense did not look very good vs Fortuna and they were somewhat exposed and had a number of mistakes. They played well vs other opponents due to offense and big leads. The question will be their D.
CN Offense is very good with a great OL and running game. QB & RB can break away, with a couple good WR's that can make some plays.
CN special teams has been solid all season with some big plays.

MC Defense has been solid most of the season and plays very physical. They contained Moreau RB last week for most of the game (that kid is good) and play well vs the run & pass most of the year.
MC Offense is explosive as well, not tested for some time. Last week, they were a little too up and down with mistakes slowing them down, and need to take care of the ball vs CN a little better. Their QB has a little extra on top of something special.
MC special teams played well last week with the exception of a fumbled punt. Edge goes to CN on specials.
I am sure both teams will be at their best. I would give a slight edge to MC, better D, and although they were choppy last week, they have the ability to pass the ball consistently giving them balance on O.
In a tight game, the team with fewer mistakes will obviously prevail.

I'm going MC 28-24. I like their D just a bit better. Although I didn know who on the outside is going to match up with Wallace.

Legend you make he trip I'll buy you a beer, you still need to get a pass from the boss :)?

Got to go with Newman. Too many weapons. Where I differ a bit with the folks above is that Brookshire isn't really that much of a scrambler. It's the designed runs and read options that have won so many games over the past two seasons. Kind of like Kaep when Kaep was still Kaep, if you know what I mean. I think he'll have a big game, and so will Wallace. I also disagree that Rubbatino was a great loss. That kid was a QB until Brookshire came along and as amazing as he is on the court he's not impressed me on the football field. He shouldn't have been playing IMHO. Good on the baseball diamond though.

I think CN wins by 2 touchdowns - if I'm wrong, and it's close, watch out for CN special teams. Either Wallace wins it all with a return to the house, or the shaky Newman kicking game loses it.

Bella, doesn't look good. But trust me I will do everything in my power. I'm bummed. This game is going to be awesome. You guys recall the last time they met? That was one for the ages too. Goff got going late and Newman couldn't stop him. Newman was up early and there big QB Dunsford looked good. Not too many times you get to see 2 kids who will be playing on sunday for $ down the line. (Goff and Wright)

. I agree with you about Rubbatino, he a basketball stud, not football. But other than Wallace, who does Newman really have receiver-wise?

#2 target is Jason Dedrick. Very nice player. Very similar to Wallace, just not quite as fast.

Not sure Fortuna "demolishes" Moreau, doesn't matter a game we will never see. MC didn't quite contain Ison from Moreau he still had 185 yards but I don't think Brookshire is as explosive. MC defense is legit and offense is better than Fortuna who dropped 42 on CN

Fortuna was a matchup nightmare for CN. They've struggled with big backs all year. Only player who would scare me on MC is Peterson. Newman's corners are legit but their safeties struggle. The seam routes are there all day for MC. At the end of the day i think CN is too talented and has more playmakers than MC. 35-30 Newman.

Gernhard is not exactly small. Now he is not a home run threat, but I could see him gouging Newman for some 4-7 yard runs. He is enough of an inside threat between the tackles that has to be respected, which helps open up the outside for Peterson who is their only genuine home run threat.

Gerhard and Fitzgerald each go 220 for MC so they are big RBs just not game breakers like Peterson. Isom didn't break any 60-70 yard tds for Moreau like he usually does to break games open, MC let him get his 10-15 yards runs on the off tackle stretch runs which is fine they just wanted to keep him in front of them as much as they could, I thought giving up 25 points to Moreau was pretty solid job

Scooby Wright got injured early in that game and did not return. This should be an outstanding game!!! I wish it was closer so that I could attend. I have not seen either team play this season so I don't have a pick. But I am a huge fan of MC and their program!

Agree that CN has a very talented team, but this one will be an exciting toss up.

For two schools with a lot of football history (17 combined NCS titles, CN 10 / MC 7) this will only be the 22nd meeting and only the third postseason meeting ever. In the 90's this was an excellent rivalry and one many North bay fans would like to see every year. CN leads series 11-9-1.

12' MC 42-37 (NCS Semi final)
99' CN 15-14
98' MC 35-3
97' MC 26-0

96' CN 28-10 (NCS Final)
96' CN 27-0

95' MC 13-12
94' MC 28-19
93' MC 28-7
92' MC 10-8

91' CN 21-7
90' MC 9-7
79' CN 20-0
78' TIE 0-0
77' CN 24-0
76' CN 31-6
73' CN 46-6
72' CN 31-8

71' MC 6-2
70' CN 20-6
68' CN 13-0

Great info bella. Just an awesome rivalry by 2 schools that often can play with basically anyone in the state. Any injury update on conner rubbatino? Will he return for hoops?

Not sure, I'm not the biggest hoops guy, but I will ask around on Saturday at the game (some of us got permission from our wives already:p).

Walking around with a noticable limp past few weeks. Hes been dribbling and shooting a little. May start scrimmaging around Christmas.

27 and Moreau missed 3 extra points.... anyway Ison still had almost 200 but they did stop major big play. Gerhard runs hard and softens middle of D. MC def is legit and as good as CN's Brookshire is advertised I don't think he is as good as Ison..(correct if I am wrong as I did not see Brookshire in person) so my guess is they keep him in check as well. Its going to be hell of a game, wish I could see it.

25 points, the offense didn't generate the 2 points off the safety

I've seen them both play and Brookshire is my pick.

Newman get kick off. Drives down field, Brookshire several nice runs. MC stuffs 3 straight running plays from inside 3. Brookshire over the top on 4th and goal. 7-0.

MC rips off big run, then Peterson brakes 25 yard or so TD run, MC scores in 40 seconds. 7-7

MC lines simply overpowering Newman. MC scores on a deflected pass. 14-7 MC. Newman can't do much up the middle against MC D line. Need to have Brookshire go outside. MC much more physical right now.

MC converts 4th and 20 from 30 yard line on a great one handed catch. Score right after, 28-7 MC 0:46 2nd. MC lines just dominating so far.

Excellent first half for Marin Catholic. No one saw this one sided of a first half

Mc way too strong up front for CN and Peterson is looking sharp, let's see hat Cronin has up his sleave second half
