Riordan has some talent on this squad. They did have a couple players out and the game was close at halftime. It was another physical game for SHC and both teams kept the refs busy all night. Some of the top players from both teams were in foul trouble throughout so it tested the depth of both squads.

The WCAL needs additional teams. Notre Dame-Belmont went to Pinewood's league. Riordan
could fill that void without messing with Presentation in San Jose. Presentation is the girls compliment to
Bellarmine College Prep (boys) in San Jose.

Notre Dame Belmont was the girls' compliment to Serra but they realized they were not aligned competitively in the WCAL. The same is true with Presentation. They will be out soon.

I’ve heard it could be next year. Riordan defeated Valley Christian last week.
Yes, that's in alignment with what I've heard as well. I was hoping it would happen this year but their JV squad fell through last year and they felt they needed another year to actually build a program. I believe Will got 5 of his freshman bay city girls on varsity this year. It's a strong, young bunch. I think they only graduate two this year as well

Yes, heard the same. next year will be the year.

I dont know about the possibility of adding more equitable team to WCAL girls-wise. There simply arent enough schools in CCS that are Catholic that can realistically compete. It is basically the Sue Phillips Machine vs everybody. Instead, the higher-ups can resurrect the old GPSL league where it was combined Catholic and other Non-Catholic privates. The teams would be much more equitable with Mitty, St. Francis, VC, Pinewood, Presentation, Sacred Heart Prep, Menlo, SH, SI, and Riordan. I am unsure if 10 teams in the league is allowable but this is the ideal league.

That would tear apart the WBAL, a league that is already functioning very well. Why does the teetering WCAL girls' arrangement have any priority at all? Seems rather presumptuous on its face.

Riordan is nowhere to be found in the CCS division of leagues and their MaxPreps schedule lists every game as non-league. So I suppose we would call them an "independent" this year.

The WCAL still has 8 strong boys teams. They also once had 8 girls teams but lost Sacred Heart Prep in mid 2000's and then Notre Dame Belmont ten years after that. If Presentation left, the girls league would be down to just 5 teams. Not good. Hoping Presentation stays and Riordan is added.

I wonder if the league is hamstrung when it comes to growing it's numbers by it's name with the word "Catholic" in there? There are not many schools that are both catholic and wishing to compete at the highest level of high school athletics. Valley Christian is one that, albeit faith based, is not purely catholic and yet they're in the league and do very well. Does the religious affiliation keep a school with strong athletics like Pinewood or Palo Alto or Los Gatos from considering joining? If it were instead just called something like Peninsula Pete Athletic League, and it was renowned for being the top athletic league in the bay area, would more schools be interested in competing at that level year in year out?
