For those of us that go way back in the history of basketball in San Francisco it was very sad to hear the loss of Riordan great and unreal point guard Dorian Manigo. Back in those days you couldn’t stand the cross town rival but as we’ll get older life changes.

I am good friends with a few of his classmates these days, and Archbishop Riordan lost a legend. Dorian was by far one of the best point guards San Francisco had ever. I have been on many road trips for Niner games with the purple and gold and Dorian met is one time. I told him in high school man I couldn’t stand any of you, but today it’s a pleasure to hang with you.

RIP DORIAN, AKA BLACK DOE. One of a kind.

Played against Dorian going all the way back to his st emydius days in elementary school he was ridiculously good prayers up to his family and the entire riordan community.

@HSWIZARD73 My account got screwed up so this is larry legend. I remember as a kid watching in the rafters at Riordan the Crusader Classic. Manigo was so good. Today he would have been blown up with all the social media stuff. Him, Ray Kelly, Jeff Speech, Fontana... etc etc. I would later catch these guys at the west sunset rec center. My dad would drop me off and say get better kid and they would let me run. RIP Dorian. Way to soon.

I never played at Sunset. I was born and raised at Eureka Valley. But Dwayne told me some of those runs were epic. We had some good run as well. To think if Kidd didn’t move to the east bay, man that would have been unreal as he did say he would have went to Riordan.

He sounds all world. Why only san francisco st?
I think one of the issues back then was it came down to exposure. You didn’t have many AAU teams. It’s a good question but I don’t know the story. He also spent a year at Eastern Washington and he was a D2 all American at State averaging 26 a game. He was also the second leading scorer behind Fontana at Riordan their senior year. But you know as many kids do, sometimes circumstances cause certain scenarios.

Wizard my family settled mainly in the Sunset/Richmond and Pops was from the Mission.
Yeah some amazing games and it was like a crack in the side door and you knew the games were on.

As for Manigo and SF State... They were very good in 1990. In fact they won the "OLD" NCAC conference that year. They had another kid who was 6"8 who I can't recall but he was a D1 player as well. Today, Manigo is one of the best guards in Norcal and would easily command multiple D1 offers. Not the exposure back then. Things have really changed.

Dorian played his first 2 seasons at Santa Monica JC and was set to be the leading scorer in school history in 1992, but the Corsairs were deemed to have used an ineligible player and had to forfeit all their games that season (went from 19-11 to 0-30) right before their 1st playoff game. Dorian was 16 points away from the record and averaged 22 points/gm his sophomore season. He had a recruiting trip scheduled for University of Oregon and Coach Don Munson (Dan Munson's dad) on a Saturday. On Monday of that week, Coach Munson was let go and all recruiting trips were put on hold by Univ. of O. It was my understanding that they were going to offer him a scholarship. Since it was very late in the recruiting season Dorian was left scrambling at ended up at Eastern Wash., where a young assistant and future great head coach was located, Coach Darrell Barbour (Woodside and Sacred Heart Cathedral).
After one season he left E. Wash and transferred to Div. 2 SF State and played for the late, great Charlie Thomas, leading the Gators to the conference championship.
I had the privilege to coach Dorian for 6 seasons from his 4th grade year to his Freshmen year at Riordan. He was a terrific young man, good student, excellent player and one of my best players ever. I was extremely close to Doe up to his passing and loved him like my son. I greatly miss our long conversations, his smile and positive energy. His passing has been felt strongly by the entire Riordan family, particularly the basketball family. We definitely lost a great one on and off the court. Peace and prayers to everyone grieving and especially the Manigo family.

Very well said Coach, Riordan has a lot of history and it’s great to see someone set the story straight
