The 2017 Class may be the 1st NorCal class I have seen in ages w/out a top 100 player Nationally. Probably had a shot had Ken Wooten stayed and played at Manteca rather than bolting for prep school.

Yeah, a good mix of 2-3 star kids but nobody in that dominant category like we've seen before. The college choices are telling alone. Not that any scholarship is a bad thing though. I will say this. It was still a fun season with some pretty good surprises.

You don't have to wait too long though... Mr. Jordan Brown is right at the top of that 2018 class and is arguably as skilled a player from norcal that we've had in a very long time.

Wooten wouldn't have been eligible this year anyway.

We've been spoiled in this area with elite players on almost a yearly basis. Should get back to that in 2018/2019/2020

Norcal about the 4stars.... Subtract 1 for realistic ability. I don't think we had 1 4 star guy. A 4 star guy to me is a Pac 12 level player.

My thought exactly. When I saw 4 Stars I immediately thought they were all Top 100/150 players. I believe Elliott Pitts may have been a 3 Star and he was ranked in the 80's Nationally and went to Arizona. No 4 Stars in the Big Sky/Big West/or WCC excluding the BIG 3.

I will say this i think jade smith could have played in the pac 12 I think this
young man has a bright future and will have a solid career at pepperdine
he is hard nosed and plays with a passion.

Bones, you are probably right. Smith is a real steal for the WCC.
Speaking of Pitts where is he now? That was a weird deal at Arizona...

Smith would be a great pick-up for Cal. Maybe he can get out of his deal with the Waves. Signing day a week away. But please do not tell me any of the other NCP 4-Star guys are Pac- 12 level

Here is our star criteria:

5-star: High Major
4-star: Mid Major
3-star: Low Major
2-star: Division II/NAIA

Of course not every 5-star is equal to each other and so on.

So for this class, the top group is considered mid-major prospects, which I think they all fit that description.

For the record: Montana is not a Mid-Major. The Big Sky is a Low-Major Conference.

NS Basketball- Its certainly debatable. There are some really bad hoops being played at so called mid major schools like Peperdine, LMU, Portland, USD, UCSB, North Arizona, UOP, etc. I mean really bad. Chico State this year would have finished middle of the pack in the Big Sky and was certainly better than the lower tier teams in the WCC.

Zags need to move over to the Pac12 for hoops. Zags are the real deal and will be right back in the mix next season. No biz playing in the WCC anymore.

Hoopjunkie21 I agree with you on robby beasley he has a chance to be special
from what I saw of him as a freshmen he has a chance to be a high major college
prospect.

I also agree re: Beasley... He stops the ball on offense a little at the moment, but he's young and can (and probably will) learn when to keep the rock moving an when to look for your own shot. He's got all the tools to be special otherwise...

I am aware of that. So the ranking would suggest Timmy Falls was a very good pickup for Montana and someone who could challenge for all-league honors at some point in his career. We'll see if that analysis holds up over the next few years.

I was really high on Sayeed Pridgett coming out of El Cerrito 2 years ago. He was the real deal then and had a great rookie season for Montana. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a multi year all league player for grizz. Montana has done very well recruiting both Falls and Pridgett. Both kids to me could have played for better programs but Montana has a good thing going and overall usually has a good team.

The one thing that sticks out to me about this class (and the class of 2016) is that they learned from previous classes about college choice. Its not always about going to the highest level you can or to a big name Power 5 school. It's really about going somewhere you fit, can play, possibly get a degree and enjoy the college experience.

I think Falls, Smith and Milstead could have all taken "bigger" lowers Pac-12 scholarships. But how much fun is possible not playing at Washington State, Oregon State and Arizona State?

I like this class and last year (2016) I think they will be very successful at the school their choose.

I think you have been mis-lead. Milstead could have played on the Pac-12 level at WSU, OSU, ASU but not the others. There may have been some interest but never a serious offer. Not sure how many basketball players would choose Montana over Arizona St.

Im actually agreeing with you NSBasketball. Im saying the lure of playing bottom level Pac-12 because its the Pac-12 is no longer as much of a lure as in the past. Longruss from O'Dowd ended up at WSU but could have probably left a bigger "mark" at a lets say Fresno State or a Montana.

Lots of bay area kids are starting to figure out that your experience, including playing time, is more important than Conference affiliation.

I guess we can call it the Lillard Effect.

I agree with you guys. Go somewhere you are going to play and enjoy the experience. As an example, Montana has a great program with awesome college environment. Football and hoop games are amazing their. Its no wonder why they've been able to grab kids like Cherry, Pidgeed, and Falls from the bay area.

I never thought Marcus Lee for example was "kentucky" good. Just a bad choice for him. Bummer because he didn't have the sort of impact at another program he could have. Would have been a great San Diego State Aztec with his defensive skills.

Speaking of Marcus Lee... I recently saw his name on the Cal roster as a redshirt, and it said he would play next year for the Bears.

Somehow, I either missed or forgot about this news...

Yup he is going to play a major role for them next year, should have gone there from the get go.........Rabb, Jaylen Brown, Tyrone Wallace and him would have been dangerous 2 years ago

Somebody has to pick up the slack for 80%+ of Cal's offense leaving. Man the bears are going to be bad next year. Have you looked at who returns? Besides Charlie Moore not much. Its no wonder Cuonzo jetted. I could see Lee averaging like 10,8, and 3 blocks next year. He was never much of an offensive player but a great defensive one.

I believe montana and grand Canyon will be better then any of the local schools
outside of St marys these next few years. I do like what I am
seeing in terms of improvement at USF and San Jose st both of those schools
had good seasons especially usf they played an exciting brand of basketball
under first year head coach kyle smith.

Its actually not debatable. As a program your level is determined by the powers that be. Gonzaga operates at a High Major level but at the end of the day they are still a Mid_Major program, Wichita State in same boat.
