Folsom in the Open?

The North will never beat the South in the Open, probably not the top 4 SoCal Teams. You can’t compete with 40 D1 guys on a roster with 5-6.
Separate North/South and have a true state playoff. NorCal is bigger than most states anyways.
I can’t argue with this. Never is a strong word but as it stands the likelihood is better to get hit by lightning twice. I mean how about going into an open game being 4-5TD underdog or more? South built a complete wrecking ball and I don’t think it does anybody any good to lose 50-7 in state champ game year in and out.

A very modest prediction: At some point in the future (perhaps not that far in the future), a NorCal private/parochial will decide it's time to mimic Mater Dei and SJB; in other words, it's time to horde as much talent as possible and go all-in on a big-time football program that generates national buzz, TV time, prime marketing and, yes, enrollment gains. The question is, "Which school (or schools) will make that conscious effort?" Serra? St. Francis? DLS? SMS?

I can assure you that SMS (St Mary’s-Stockton) will NOT take this path. As much as our school and coaches appreciate our football team, there is much integrity at St. Mary’s and much more focus on academics than to ever take this path. Sure, our school benefits on the fact that some travel from nearby cities like Tracy and Lodi to attend St. Mary’s and play football for St. Mary’s. But, each student must maintain an acceptable GPA and uphold the characteristics expected at the school in order to pursue football or any other sport at St. Mary’s. Football is not the priority and this message is shared at the start of every season. Nor is any other sport. The Rams are more known for Girls basketball (nationwide) based on its historical success in this sport. The program has been successful without any kind of recruiting by working with local talent or any talent nearby that “wants” to attend St. Mary’s. Students seek out attending St. Mary’s, not faculty/coaches seeking out students. But, true that success in its own acts as an indirect way of recruiting. DLS football and St. Mary’s Girls basketball are pure examples of this indirect recruiting. Likewise, I do not believe the other private schools have a priority to hoard their schools with athletic talent. Academics #1!

MD and SJB may be in some kind of battle but I don’t sense other privates like Servite and others are following this path or intend to. Just my opinion.

The only program that could compete with SJB and MD ( at least from a talent standpoint) would be Grant. Their biggest obstacle would be keeping the talent in house, which has become a tall order…

Currently: They are a long way from being an elite team, but their football community is still among the best in NorCal.

They also have several tangibles in their favor:

1) Deep football alumni

2) Proximity; accessibility, district enrollment policy

3) Their pop Warner program has had a ton of success against the programs that feed into SJB and MD.

Could you imagine having Flores, Lopa, O. Smith Jr., Goss-Pruit, and Shabazz at wideout? (all North area guys). This crew would be one of the best receiving cores in the nation….

3) Maealiuaki Smith at QB… He used to play for Jr. Pacers…

They would have the number 1 offense in the state right now…

Not to mention the host of kids who are sprinkled around various school’s throughout the region.

It seems that Grant's enrollment may have plummeted a bit. They're listed as a D-III school now.

My point was not to diminish Folsoms schedule, as I agree it’s been amongst norCals best, and likely THE BEST this season. My point was, I dont think Folsom has scheduled a single team “above their level”.
Who would be above their level?

Right - you have to wait for a DLS down year.
Oh riiiight- That agreement to play....how many years ago? Folsom must have been timing these games right when these receivers would peak!

You guys think every Folsom decision is a conspiracy lol

Hate to tell you this. But Grant is gone and NEVER coming back.

Grant has typically had a D3 enrollment. Some years it meets the D2 requirements. But it’s typically been a D3 enrollment school.

As usual, my comment zipped right over your homer mentality!

Only public school in all of California to win Open
True - and that year, both teams in Open were publics. Following my curiosity, 5 different public schools have represented in Open division since it started in 2008.
Centennial x3
Crenshaw
Grant
Poly LB
Westlake

Yes, the times have certainly changed! The Southern Private Schools definitely got in on the action. Lol

I understand why SJB and MD would go all in. I give them props for turning their programs into factories! As some other poster eluded to, it brings a ton of recognition to their school!

They totally changed the landscape of CA football….

Well, Grant has an OPEN state title. Only public school in Nor-Cal to achieve that.
They sure do. Over a decade ago. Haven't really been relevant since.

Tried to jump into the SFL and hardly lasted into the 1st round in a boxing match.

Folsom has 4 state titles. I think they are just fine, to Grant's 1 :)

Those 4 state titles just means you were 9th in the state. Cream of the Crop play in the open period. Talk to me when Folsom gets an Open bid. Best Public school in Nor-Cal!! But you have never been in the Open Before.

OPEN Is generally for private schools that was playing in the OK Corral system.

Folsom has been where they should be.

4 titles. :)

That’s an inaccurate statement. Would like to correct that? Because in other sports the open is represented well by public schools. Also cen10 is in the open every year. In a much harder section. But be happy for those titles, well earned. The rest of us that know the real, don’t consider you top 5 in the state if you can’t make the open.

Really? How many public schools are in the OPEN title game every year?

CIF has had the State Open game for 13 years. Six California Public school teams have participated in the Open. That' s not that bad. And it could have been as high as eight if certain SJS teams had taken care of business.

Also, nothing beats the Grant OGs! Love those guys sporting the OG shirts at the NorCal tip-off! I’m sure they show up for football too!
