Monterey Trail and Folsom will now start at 8 PM. A few other games are being pushed back by 30 minutes to an hour too

Joe Davidson said JV games would go on becuase referees sometimes work both games.

Thx for update. I will try to attend although I have a feeling it will end up like 49-7. Hope not but daunting task!

No worries. Folsom almost always starts a season hot and Monterey Trail almost always starts slow--sometimes REALLY slow, like 0-5. MTHS lost their season opener 3 of the 5 times they have been to the championship. Truth be told, the entire first month will be daunting. Like last year, the scores of those games will not define the season.

Yup, it seems like Monterey Trail does this just about every year. Their league is historically weak, so they load up in the non-league and that helps get them able to handle that step up in competition when the playoffs start.

What's wrong with playing in a little heat? The football programs in Palm Desert, Texas, Las Vegas, and Arizona manage just well with their 100 degree weather.

Most of those are night games I'm sure. Probably a 7ish start time as opposed to 8

Jeez ...how times have changed.

Not only did my team practice routinely in triple digit heat -- we played our home games on Saturday's at 1PM. Lots of triple digit games in SEPT and sometimes even into OCT. I recall one game being "around" 107 at kickoff (field temp was likely a bit higher).

We prided ourselves in having the advantage of being used it versus teams with later practices and FRI night home games.

Game times never got pushed back or moved to another day. And nobody ended up in the hospital!

The only difference between then and now as far as I can tell are turf fields vs. natural grass. The years I coached not all that long ago I do recall some instances where field temps were something ridiculous like between 115 and 120 or so. But we also played during the worst part of the day(the 4-5 o'clock hours).

It shouldn't be as bad at 7-7:30.

Yeah honestly I get the smoke and air quality stuff, but an 8pm start with a 7pm start in conditions that are easier than what the kids practice in makes no sense. Maybe more for us out of shape fans!😭. Oh well. Times have def changed.

You’re mostly right very rarely would games be altered but we were also lucky for a long time with weather/other events. I actually recall in many areas games starting at 8pm Varsity. I prefer 7 much more now. Also the season starts earlier in the summer now. No more September openers.

Do not discount the turf it gets way hotter than grass! 10-20*? But kids should be fine the valley is alway hot in the summer and they’ve been acclimated all summer!

While I respect the “Back in our Day blah blah blah” mantra (I use it often myself), in this particular case I suppose I’d counter with “Why not push the game back an hour, if it’s possible?” If it helps drop the temperature 5’, why not???

I didn’t criticize, just stated how things have changed.

But to answer your question, I’ve noticed a lot of games getting moved up from 730 to 715, 7 and even 645 in recent years because the games go too late.

But if it’s only 1 or 2 games in August then I guess I get it. Sort of.

Like LL I get it for the smoke. But heat, cold, etc is part of the game. Kids in other areas play under much worse heat conditions than we’ve got in NorCal where humidity isn’t a factor like it is in the South and East Coast and we don’t see Vegas or AZ 117 degree days.

They’re being too overprotective IMO. But that’s CA for you these days….

My sons youth game tomorrow is still on, start time 5:00 and it’s supposed to be hotter than today.

Exactly what I am talking about. I coached youth kids for a few years not that long ago and our games kicked off at 5ish. On turf fields. Never delayed unless smokey.

If those kids can handle it why can’t the HS? Like I said other HS kids around the country play in worse conditions and so did the kids here until recently apparently. SMH.

Btw, that 8pm start turned into 825 and it’s 10pm at half. Just dumb. Wasn’t even hot. Kids are playing pop Warner today at 2pm on turf. Now that is hot. Keep the games at 7. Nobody is dying.

You were a real man and the ones today are not? Is that your asinine point?

Perhaps you recall a young man by the name of Jordan McNair, a Maryland Terrapin from Randallstown, MD. Hmm, just like me so I take more than a casual interest in the story. He DIED because of heat stroke so when I read idiotic posts like yours it more than pisses me off.

Another moron has spoken. And it isn't ancient history. It was 4 years ago almost to the day.

36 kids suited up, 36 kids walked off the field. Not 1 kid was hospitalized, pass out or need medical care. Was it hot? Heck yea! Did we have plenty of water, you bet!

What I don’t understand is the urge to push back the varsity game but no talk about the JV game that is most likely hotter! Then youth games that go on all day! People need to suck it up.

Ok buttluv. So what. He probably had an underlying condition that wasn’t diagnosed. What’s your point. You can find an outlier anywhere and in anything we do. Riskier driving to the game for these kids than playing in it.

Ok Turtle, what’s your suggestion? Start football in December? One guy in Maryland dies from heat stroke and we should only move varsity’s games back an hour will solve the problem? Stop having 4 youth football games spread out on Saturday? What’s your solution for JV high school games? Go play another sport if you can’t hang….

Yup. Just ignore the guy. Typical name caller who doesn’t provide solutions
Hydrate , pay attention to your body, talk to your coaches. 1 random incident is not a sample size.
