Games tonight

Thats an extensive injury, massive knee trauma. It's alway what you cant see, feel to determine extent until it's lit up by magnets. Im sure that limited his ability, but not heart, playing with the brace. Props to you and your son for finding that grit to go once more into the fray. Lol

-adult talk, measured expectations, but modern med interventions with PCL could be quite good, particularly if ACL intact, MCL strong and with competent treatment plans-rehab, prognosis is stellar.
I'm not sure how much grit I showed. Doctors have since told him that he essentially no longer has a PCL in that knee. As you probably know even severely torn MCL's require time to heal and rarely need surgery. At the time of his injury he probably had three or four offers including Reno. He tried to verbally commit, but UNR wouldn't allow him to do so. They kept asking him to send them film his senior year and when he complied and sent them film showing him getting better and better, they still wouldn't let him commit. Right before signing day they offered him a grey shirt, but by then he was jaded with them.

This was his very first collegiate game as a redshirt freshman, check out the first play it was a pancake on a nice Joe Protheroe run. Right guard #60. He also did the short snapping. Later on in the video there's good footage of Dano Graves and of course more nice film of Joe Pro.

That's a hell of nice pancake. As far as college recruiters, some are just full of crap. Glad he got on with Cal Poly!

Thanks, Cal Poly was one of the last to offer him late in his senior year. I don't fully understand the true meaning of all the colors of shirts but here's how grey shirt was explained to me. First of all it's a full ride like any other FBS offer. Reno had a player that decided to forego his final year of eligibility, but he needed to stay on scholarship the remainder of the school year to graduate. That means his scholarship wouldn't be available to my son until June or July, which means Tyler wouldn't be signing on National Signing Day in February and would miss out on all that hoopla. There's nothing wrong with a degree from UNR, but in hindsight I think I'd prefer to have a degree from CP.

You got me curious about the various [color]shirting. I didn't know much about all the other colors like green and blue. Here's a link for those of us less informed. Although UNR is a good school, CalPoly is better in most ways.

Actually, I think one has to wait until August to utilize a grey shirt

Good memory pantera-cat. If my memory serves correctly, I think Rocklin had to move their stud receiver into the QB position for their state game.. So it was a bit of a double - loss (losing star players at two spots). Yet the Thunder still had Servite on the ropes in that game.
You guys have good memories. I believe that was the case.

Kinda deja-vu, the year Rocklin went to State didn’t they start a backup QB?
“Then shorthanded Rocklin (14-1) made a valiant comeback.

Backup quarterback Tiger Sorenson hit Holden Huff for an 8-yard touchdown pass. Then Jackson Cummings (159 yards, 29 carries) had a pair of scoring runs of 17 and 1 to tie it 30-30 with 8:51 left.
Sorenson threw for 241 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions on 15-of-30 passing. He filled in for Jimmy Laughrea, who broke his arm in last week’s 24-14 win over Del Oro.”

Dang Big, you busted out all the stats! I remember that game well, there’s never been a nor-cal school I haven’t rooted for come state time. Cummings was a stud, and wasn’t Huff a tall scrappy tight end? The announcers mentioned many times how Rocklin was actually missing 2 playmakers by having the QB go down.

You guys are correct.

Jimmy Laughrea was injured during the 2009 Section title game against Del Oro (collarbone IIRC) and Tiger Sorensen started the SBG in his place.

Tiger had been the starting QB the previous season as a junior but was lost for the season after suffering a collarbone injury up at Nevada Union. Rocklin brought Laughrea up from the JV to finish out the 2008 season.

Previous to the SBG Tiger hadn’t played the QB position much in around 15 months.

To your point, Tiger had become one of the Thunder’s main wide outs along with Holden Huff and Kyle Garvella. Losing Jimmy affected 2 positions.

Lastly, I’ve argued with our resident Servite fan Sammyswordsman for years that losing Jimmy — a D1 dual threat QB and major component of Rocklin’s diverse and highly potent offense — affected Rocklin more than Servite losing the all-world 2-way star Troy Niklaus.

He contends that Servite didn’t care about the game and took Rocklin lightly (BS excuse) and that since Tiger played well it negated losing Jimmy since (according to Sammy) he wouldn’t have been able to play much better than Tiger did (another BS excuse).

Truth is Rocklin got mired in a 27-10 hole largely due to a slow start by Tiger and the offense due to rust and Tiger wasn’t near the passer or run threat that Jimmy was. Also, Benzel had to change up the offense a bit to run plays more suited towards Tiger’s skill set.

Regardless, no matter the greatness of Niklaus, to assert that his absence was more profound than losing an all-world dual threat QB is just plain silly.

I have no doubt in my mind that Rocklin wins that game if Laughrea and Niklaus both played.

That Thunder offense was as talented, potent and multidimensional as any I’ve seen in a long while. They gave Grant Union’s defense trouble who was far better than Servite’s defense.

The Pacers defense blanked State Champ Bellevue in Seattle earlier that season and boasted numerous FBS scholarship athletes as well as a couple future NFL’ers in Shaq Thompson and James Sample. Current NFL’er Devontae Booker also played on that team but didn’t play defense.

As you guys pointed out, despite the loss of 2-starters one being QB, Rocklin was still one play from winning.

Let’s hope this current Rocklin team can compete with Folsom similarly or better if Lueth indeed cannot play.

Even without their stud QB, Rocklin will go far in DII. This is the best all around Rocklin team I've seen over the past 10 seasons. I was really hoping to see how they would match up at full strength against the blue field group, especially with their line and skill players. I think they would have given that group a real test.

I’d have to agree with you, except that one could make the case that last Spring’s team might have been better but we didn’t get to see a full season or postseason. But talent wise, they were legit.

Also, their 2015 team was really, really good too. That team was a fumble in the end zone away from taking a 2nd half lead and possibly beating Folsom. The 14-point swing was huge and avoidable.

A similar momentum swinging play also occurred against Del Oro in the Section Final — a team the Thunder had previously beaten by 25 points.

I’d say that team and last Spring’s team would be the only contenders against this current team, in terms of the best they’ve fielded since 2009.

Seriously, I do think they are pretty good. Better than DLS - who knows? But I know this for sure... We have a much better idea come next weekend and even better idea after Oct 15th.

PS - I should have read the next post from Jfoyosoul - we have the same idea about firm comparisons.
After watching DLS get throttled on national TV, I firmly believe Rocklin is better.

That was a really good game, I remember that one. I didn't think going into it DO had much chance after the Thunder beat them pretty good during the season, but yea, one play, changed the game. Good memory, Thunder.
