Mercury News All Star Teams

Surprised Thomas was not player of the year given her statistical season
More so than in the past, there seems to be a larger bias these days toward giving awards to the best player on the best team. I think we all (maybe almost all city boy) agree that HJ has a higher upside potential than IT. But as far as Most Valuable to their team, I don't think that was very close this year. Without IT, Sacred Heart Cathedral would have been mediocre this year. Without HJ, Mitty would still have won WCAL and been an Open qualifier.

Agree but still a solid selection, can't argue with it.

Mercury didn't include the City teams in their ratings.

Exactly. It is limited to the 4 primary counties of the old Tribune, Times & Mercury News service areas. From the article:

Who is eligible?

Those eligible for all-Bay Area News Group teams come from leagues based predominantly in Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. The Bay Area News Group chooses the team.

plus the WCAL obviously

A tough call for BANG, as giving the award to someone who can't even get the paper isn't easy.

Was Thomas the MVP of the WCAL?

Ah, Clay, you apparently suffer from the dreaded "Media Dinosaur Syndrome." Which means you still can't fathom the reality of online newspapers. Anyone anywhere in the world (even San Francisco) can access BANG's material. Print is dead, sir. Dead. Just look at this blog. It might as well be Exhibit A.

Clay has to watch his step--he makes millions reviewing sic-fi/fantasy for BANG.

or maybe he does it for free...

only his tax returns can tell us.

As always, it's big money fast in print journalism ... the biggest benefit to the scifi gig is free books, let me put it that way.

I do know that where Thomas is from had an impact on her chances of being Player of the Year -- though it made little sense to me.
