Mike Bibby New Head Coach at Sacramento State

Sac state wildin. Never coached college basketball before. Was fired over a sexual harassment claim at his former coaching job.
Hasn't been coaching since 2019.

Should have hired Brice

This might be a smart move. No coach with abilities will stay long if successful. Previous coach left to be an assistant. People complain about the portal but the coaching portal is just as bad. Maybe Mike will hang around for a minute

Another good candidate could have been Cal Lutheran's Russell White. Not sure if he would move away from his alma mater, but took over a bad program and has completely turned them around. Has a great reputation in the basketball community. Coaching style is impressive too. Witnessed it first hand when my son played at Chapman.

Good points...

And, to expound on that: Considering Bibby's lack of recent coaching experience and also his past problems, he needs both to repair his image, and demonstrate he's got coaching ability. Also, he probably needs to stick with one program and have success for a few seasons before he gets seriously considered by bigger programs and gets offers from same.

Yes, and look at what Derek Fisher is doing at Crespi. Getting experience with the LA area players. I would imagine he gets a chance certainly University of Little Rock. Bibby great player but is he a good coach/leader/mentor or after a career. Give Sac State credit for getting a brand name to recruit from families who loved that 2000 era of Kings basketball at Arco. A plus.

Gotta tell Brice to apply for an assistant job.

It would help Sac State to try and get a Central Valley connected Coach. Brice will get his chance, look what he did for MJC in one season 22 plus wins from previous year. He is MC Athletic Director and MJC Head coach. Great coach to his players!

Y’all throwing out names of local hoops guys who I’m guessing know their way around a chalk board. The issue is, Sac St doesn’t want that guy, they want a name, an image. President Woods wants Sac St in the news, the media, etc. he wants people talking about Sac State. It was President Woods pushing for Vick, and it was Pres Wood pushing for Bibby. While Bibby may seem like a risky hire, I’d say “what’s actually at risk?”. Sac St bball hasn’t been relevant since…..ever. (Maybe the 90’ team that was setting 3pt records? )
Moving to a new playing site, new coach who’s a former NBA star and local Kings legend, seems like small risk to me.

Limited NIL at Sac State...small gym...no winning tradition...coaches revolve like credit card debt...HBCU styled hire like when my main man Reggie Theus was hired to coach and AD at Bethune Cookman.
Is Bibby cut out to deal with ice cold road games in Montana and Idaho?
Or is this resume building for an NBA asst job or prep work for a mid major opening?
Sometimes it's about having something dignified to do ..his father coached college then became a longtime NBA asst...this is the Bibby blueprint
One thing assured this is not a long term hire for the stingers up

I do not disagree with what you are saying about Woods but I must point out that the team that Katz, B. Laird and Chris Walker had with Mikh McKinney, Dylan Garrity, Cody Demps and the Stuteville boys about a decade ago was relevant. They were winning and putting people in seats and it looked at this point like the program could be on its way to stepping up to a level similar to how Troy Taylor had the football program during his years at CSUS. However, it never sustained.

Some of the northern California colleges and university should tap into the the high school coaching market. It common knowledge in the basketball grassroots world that many of the best basketball coaches reside in high school and high level aau organizations.

There are many head coaches up north (and down south) who have had decades of success with fluctuating players and circumstances. If you look around the country in most cases (like 80% of the time) when colleges take a chance on a really really established and good secondary or shoe brand coach that they usually bring as much if not more success than a life long assistant with no head coaching experience.

Congrats to Mike he did a good job at Shadow Mountain.

Not saying the Hornets haven’t had some quality players over the years, but did any of those teams win more than a single game in the conference tourney? I’m thinking that “maybe” they made the Big Sky Semi finals once, “maybe”. If you can’t make the Championship Game of one of the weaker DI conferences in the country, I’m sticking with “not relevant”, but that’s just me.

I don’t disagree, although the bball teams are moving out of Hornet Gym next season, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the timing of the Bibby hire coincides with that move.

I don’t especially think Bibby has the qualities I’d look for in a successful coach at this level - but as I stated before, we live in a different world of recruiting and NIL. A name like Bibby (and he does have a lot of connections at the AAU level) will likely bring in some additional Nil money, and probably a few players.

Like I said, pretty low risk/high possible reward move by Sac St IMHO
