Portal on steroids

Just like there are no lower seeds in the NCAA tourney sweet 16

When NIL becomes the top priority over PT and experience, this is what happens. Guys will take 100k to be the 7th or 8th man as opposed to 50k and a starting position.

Gotta take the good with the bad when it comes to NIL….unfortunately all the smaller programs are at risk of moving to D2 or D3

The flip side.. coaches can move freely for more money. Mcneese, new Mexico, drake, Colorado st, Xavier all looking for coaches and nobody is complaining

I thought Steve Alford made some good points on the NIL payments. Could be a shock to some of these players when their "regular" jobs don't pay quite this much and it isn't up front regardless of effort.

Now I'm all for players getting paid and think its comical how coaches complain about players jumping when they do it all the time, but the above thought made sense to me

The powers that be never get any of this right.

Should the players be compensated? Sure, I guess. I mean, they are getting a free scholarship which isn't peanuts.

But I do understand that millions and billions were going into the pockets of others despite the student-athletes generating that revenue. So, yeah, I do think they should get a piece of it. But not the way they're doing it.

IMO, the right way to do it is for any NIL money a player generates to go into an escrow account to be paid out upon graduation or if/when they leave early for the professional ranks. And if they do the latter, they should be required to pay back the scholarship.

Incentivize graduating from college. For those that are only in it for the 1-3 years it takes to get them into the pros and couldn't care less about the degree -- they can afford to pay back the scholly (by opting to leave early).

A benefit of their NIL going into an escrow account is not allowing these kids to blow all their NIL money or to flaunt their wealth while in school (while they are less mature). Allow them a capped stipend (out of their NIL $$) each month to help make ends meet. But other than that, all other NIL earnings should be deferred until graduation or upon entering the pros.

I'd also add penalties for taking NIL from one school then leaving for another as a way to de-incentivize the practice.

The old way didn't work (too many rules and regulations), but neither does the new way (very few rules and regulations).

As long as every student on scholarship pays it back. No matter the scholarship.

The four-year programs are now little more than what the JC's have been all along.
Unless you are a top maybe 100 national high school senior why would anyone school recruit you? They need to win now. They are going to take a 23 year old proven vet in the portal over a high school kid who is very likely to enter the portal after his frosh year.

It's only fair and balanced to note that college coaches have had their own transfer portal available since Dr. Naismith nailed up his first peach basket.

Fair and balanced? Not in the least. It’s a very flawed comparison.

College coaches are living out their professions. Typically while raising families. They are not student-athletes or kids.

It’s akin to arguing amateur versus professional. They are two very distinct things.

The kids at university are there to learn how to one day do what their coaches are doing. They are not peers. One is a very young amateur adult still trying to forge their lives and independence while the other has already evolved past that stage in life. Typically well past that stage in life.

If the topic was children around the world not believing they should have a bed time — would you really think it was fair and balanced to point out that parents/adults haven’t had bedtimes since forever?

One has nothing to do with the other.

Yet it's those student-athletes that give those coaches the opportunity to move to another program w/o notice, all the while they were enriching those programs. And those incoming freshman and returning players left high and dry.

After sitting in the living room and telling mom and dad that he will take care of his son for the next 4 years.

I was just joking, but good info anyway...
Worked with a guy who got married and came back from his honeymoon and had a new hyphenated last name which now included his wife’s name. Lets just say the amount of sh!t that guy got lasted for years until he got divorced and got his balls and original last name back.
