Mitty-Cardinal Newman updates

More so if you say coach Mertle considers coach Phillips a mentor you really have to closer than most

Well, I stand corrected. If you know that the CIF representative ushered them off then you have more info than I.

In attending the previous games and the boys open game following it just wasn't the case. Once again you sound much closer to the situation than most.
The coaches and players shook hands after the game.
A rep from the CIF ushered CN into the media room immediately after they received their awards so that they could conduct their interviews as Mitty was receiving their awards and took their pics. CN was just following instructions and if you have an issue take it up with the CIF.
Their is no problem with Coach Phillips and Coach Mertle. In fact Coach Mertle considers her a mentor.
So before you try to drum up some kind of BS issue...know your facts.
Not on @northbaybbguru 's watch. I'm picturing Rob Riggle.

I didn't even notice at the time, but that makes sense and I knew there had to be a reason. Didn't think it was actually any kind of showing up on the part of mertle.

Well... I can't say anything for against those 2000's teams cuz I was living in Oregon then.

Don't know about those SHP teams of the 90's either... Either I don't remember them, or they were after I moved to Oregon in late 1994.

Anyway, when I moved to Oregon just in time for the '94-95 season, one of my first observations about my new locale was that the girls' ball was clearly far better up there. Seemed like every team I saw play up there was solid, had a grasp of things like moving your feet on defense rather than standing there and reaching, boxing out, handling the ball with either hand... you know, the basics that any good team need to know. btw, up there the girls play the exact same as the boys' rules. No shot clock, 10-second timeline, and backcourt violations. This stresses play-running and ball-handling and passing instead of throwing up wild shots from 20 feet as the 30-second shot clock ran down, which was Calif. ball at the time (with the exception of those very few powerhouse teams).

The girls in CA have sure caught and blown by Oregon now, though... I see good play more often that not when I stumble upon a girls' game in Calif.

I also have theory is that girls' and women's sports in general were more advanced at the time due to the presence of Nike and Reebok in Oregon. Those companies saw women's sports as an untapped gold mine (Hey! We got 150 million girls we can sell shoes to!!) and aggressively pushed development in the area, possibly before it really caught on with girls elsewhere.

As in seemingly everything, there are exceptions anyway. Such as that great Alain Leroy Locke team that came up from LA in 1981... They had three fantastic wing/guard players... If I recall correctly, two were signed at USC (then a superduperpowerhouse that would also have Cheryl Miller in a couple years) and the other was headed to UCLA. This was just before the modern NorCal/SoCal setup but just after the old "TOC". The 8-team finals were played basically the same as the TOC, and Locke and another SoCal team or two were invited up. As I recall, Locke had played this weird schedule with all their games in Sept. to maybe November. The team didn't reform until a couple weeks before the Southern Section tourney, but they won it easily anyhow. Their record was like 12-0 with a 3-month break in the middle. So... They came on up to Oakland and flat ran OFF with three games and took home the hardware. (I now realize one of their players was future WNBA and Olympics star Cynthia Cooper). Now... THAT might be an old-time team that could run with the top teams of today... maybe...

Another exception... Remember Terry Mann? A 6'3" block of granite that carried Point Loma to four straight titles, the last three in D1. She probably never got pushed off the low block even once... Unfortunately, blew up her knee as a college frosh, and as far as I know never played again.

Anywayyy... That Clovis West v. Mitty game should be off-the-hook...
Can't wait to see the game and great summary of some great teams. I remember Cynthia Cooper playing center on defense and the point on offense for Locke. Berkeley High's undefeated squad the year prior was a good one too.....

I missed out on that Berkeley team, too. Locke's year was my first at the TOC.

Of the five starters on that Berkeley team with Angel Hardy, none lived in Berkeley.
