MM was hooting and hollering after they found out SMS lost to Pinewood. The video is all over the internet.
Acting like they already won Saturdays game. Passtheball.com tweeted out a GUARANTEE by the MM people they were winning!!....lol...perhaps that tweet was a joke. BUT the point being MM acting and talking like the win is in the bag.

As a lifelong watcher of team sports...me thinks the cart is being put before the horse by MM.

Can Pinewood shock the country and do it again??? 2 top 10 teams in 5 days???

I cant wait for Saturday!!!:D

The only difference is no one will be expecting anything less than an all out effort by Pinewood this time. Pinewood kind of snuck up on St. Mary's of Stockton. I'm sure most teams would prefer to play Pinewood rather than SMS. I think Kelly Sopak will have his team focused on the task at hand. I didn't see the Pinewood SMS game, so I can't comment too much other than big upset IMO. I did see Miramonte and was impressed at how Sabrina's supporting cast kept the team in the game the first half. Then sabrina returned the favor and played one of the best second halves I've seen in high school girls basketball. The refs could have swallowed the whistle a bit more IMO. You want the games to be settled by the players only. Salesian played hard but made too many costly and untimely mistakes. You must handle each position well in big games. Minyon Moore was very impressive however. Angel Jackson developing more is a scary thought. Obviously Minyon will be missed, but Salesian has a good young core of ballers. They will be back.

Miramonte vs Pinewood should be a good game as it's tough to beat teams 3 times straight. And I think dating back to last season Miramonte has won the last two. Two good teams with two top notch coaches. Get your popcorn early, it should be fun to watch.

if true, unfortunate lapse of sportsmanship and etiquette. but think about being a teenager and finding out you've been spared a date with the Hangman…more release from anxiety than arrogance.

even with its storied history and multiple state titles, I doubt that Pinewood had ever beaten the best team in the country. on Saturday, they'll be playing with house money.

for MM, a public school with a limited number of seats for open enrollment, it's Now or Not Any Time Soon. if I trek to Sleep Train, I'm bringing an umbrella. forecast calls for rain.

While I'd like to think it's gonna rain 3's on both sides, the depth perception of shooting in a large area like this one will have a big play on outside shooting.

If true, it's too bad that MM didn't show unsportsman like conduct and while they are teenage kids, it's still no excuse. MM can reload at any time BECAUSE they are open enrollment AND because Kelly is the coach. I"m sure he's had to shew more than enough kids away from MM for fear that he'd be in the same predicament Daryl was when there were outside kids playing for MM and the entitled parents of kids who got cut went and complained to the admin.

sorry for erros...typing from my phone!

if you wouldn't mind, tell me what you think that means. I'm guessing who gets into the school may not be who you think.

Open enrollment means ANYONE can go to that school (along with Campo, Acalanes, and Las Lomas) if there is room-hence the limited open enrollment.

When the late Daryl Hiroshima was the coach at MM, he had some kids who went to MM that were not from Orinda and had played for him at Orinda Magic. The first time (they unsuccessfully tried to get him fired), they made Andy Spinola co-head coach, then the second time, a lot of the parents got together and basically got him fired. They were upset that the outside kids were taking playing time away from kids who sat the bench OR get cut.

at least that's how I remember it. ;)

consider, there are limited empty seats available, and these schools are primarily attractive for academic reasons (non-athletes want in too). the district wants state $, and may or may not care about a particular team. it'd be like saying 5% of seats at catholic schools were available for non-catholics, the rest for documented true believers (although it's easier to get baptized than to afford a house in Orinda). and what coach at a catholic school will get fired because good players come there from outside the neighborhood? so there's parent politics, not a small deal w wealthy parents. just saying, it's not like a private. consider that in its history, MM has been to only 1 state championship game, and lost. not exactly De La Salle. w respect to the Open Division, I stick with Now or Not Any Time Soon.

I followed and admired Pwd since my daughter was paired in the backcourt w a Pwd kid in AAU ball, and they became friends. last year, after a MM win by mid-teens (sound familiar?) their second meeting went to overtime. you're right--if MM kids think it's in the bag, they may be in for a rude surprise. Doc is a brilliant coach, and the loser almost always learns more from a defeat than a winner does from a victory.

Any public school in California that is not overcrowded is open to anyone who wants to go there. They have to jump through some hoops and arrange transportation, but it's true for all schools -- as long as the district the potential transfer comes from will release them.

I think "unsportsmanlike" is a little strong for this. The Miramonte players and fans all knew SMS was waiting, and SMS was No. 1 for a reason. Do you think the team scheduled to play UConn next in the women's tournament would get excited if UConn got upset just before they were supposed to play?

The moment also came right after the end of a hardfought game against a quality opponent (Salesian is a very good basketball team) when emotions were running high to begin with. It was the icing on the cake ...

Unsportsmanlike? What were they supposed to do? Nothing? Politely clap their hands? Be sad that their path to their first-ever state championship just got measurably easier?

Sorry, Clay. Your statement that any public school in CA that has seats is open to anyone is totally false. If a school district is funded primarily by local property taxes (basic aid), the rule of thumb is to deny any and all inter-district transfers if at all possible because those kids suck funds from the district taxpayers and their offspring. There are exceptions (state law mandates that children can attend schools where their parents work, for example).

For the record I didn't start this thread because I thought MM had done anything unsportsmanlike.

I was at dinner last night when I saw the tweet about the guarantee. And 20 mins later I got the video sent to me.
And it just occurred to me that MM was acting like they had already won. And I thought they were getting ahead of themselves.

I am sure that when MM found out SMS had lost that a HUGE amount of pressure came off as the big bully in the state had been taken down. And their reaction wasn't totally unexpected.

I definitely think there is a danger of MM coming in a little too confident and it wouldn't shock me if they fell behind right out of the gate.

ok, I concede. I tried to put a different spin on it by casting SMS as MM's hangman. except for 2014, they have a history of ending MM's postseason, and this year in particular they looked to be a likely winner. not unsportsmanlike, just lacking compassion for a fallen foe. being kids, actually joyful. and since my post about not looking past Pwd, I watched the video of Pwd/SMS. if they're a puncher, they have lots of punches in their arsenal.

If Pinewood continues to connect from distance (16 of 32) at Tuesday's rate, it should be a ballgame Saturday. But asking those kids to repeat that performance might be a bit much. Then again, who knows? The problem for them is that MM is capable of making 3's at a high rate as well. And MM can dominate the glass. MM has to be heavily favored (again). But Pinewood has heard that before.

Coach Darrell Hirashima, I'd say he at least deserves to have his name spelled correctly.
