Did the CIF have it right with the matchups?

Which games were the least competitive?

No, CIF didn’t have it right. How teams like Mack and Aquinas were paired with schools that have well over 1500 kids was a joke. Pacific would have been a much better game with Central and SC vs CVC if the later even deserved to be there. And Mack vs Aquinas these would have made two of the three much better games, CV would probably have been beaten.

Enrollment is a big deal, but at what point does it not matter?
Did the matchup equity hold true for the lower division state games hosted by the Northern teams?

The Newman vs EC-Oceanside game was very good in first half. Both teams went to locker room still in the game but Newman electing to receive ball in 2nd was huge. Cronin made adj and el Camino couldn’t do anything. This is a school that beat Oceanside earlier in the year. Oceanside nearly beat state champ corona Del Mar. EC got worn down but that was a very good team.

Cardinal Newman last 2 years goes down in my book as arguably the best teams to ever play in Sonoma County. This years newman team could have beaten most d1 top teams in NorCal. I watched many of them play and I would put Oak Ridge and Newman very even.

No clue about lower division games. But it’s a huge deal when you consider many of these small schools are playing with Freshman and sophomores at key positions all over the field and forced to go both ways. Aquinas and Mack were like D5 section champs playing D1 programs playing down that is ridiculous.

Yet CIF and NorCal allows them to play down while Mack is forced into a game they were clearly out matched in. That’s the point of this thread.

Did you guys actually watch these games? DLS was right in that game before the 14 point swing when they fumbled on the 3. That wasn’t as lopsided of a game as people will say. Serra loses by a score to a very talented corona Del Mar. not sure North has any complaints with exception of Mack but they are a victim of their own success.

I watched every game FYI. Why would the North have complaints? Other than Mack that is? CVC was given a D5 school to play. Central was again also given a small school is SC to play. (A very good team however small non the less) Serra showed well but CDM was clearly superior. Would have been a shame if Serra pulled that out based on being offsides on onside kicks. (Rule change needed here) And DLS was simply DLS they showed very well and never gave up, however I never really got the feeling they were much of a threat to win.

Talent wise this was a College D1 team against a College D2/3 team playing against eachother. DLS could not up a better fight despite the circumstances.

Good points. What should the CIF do to get one step closer?

I was at the Milpitas/Reseda game last night. Very ugly for Reseda they couldn’t match up what so ever against Milpitas on either side of the ball. I suppose that’s what happens when a 3,300 enrollment school plays a school barely cracking 1,500. One can tell though Reseda is a great program playing against schools their own size. I do not agree with how CCS does their playoffs but it is what is it.

Sierra Canyon will most likely be D-1 in their playoffs next year. Imagine that...

Every school in the Milpitas’s league is at least one third smaller than them, and they were 3-3 in league. The CIF and CCS want competitive equity. This is equity. Calpreps has Milpitas at 19.8 and Reseda at 11, but they were rated much closer before they played. Don’t feel sorry for Reseda. They were 0-3 in league and had the same less than rigorous playoff path as Milpitas. Reseda’s playoff opponents were rated -23.7, -3.9, 4.5, 2.7, 14.4 and 19.8. Welcome to the new world of competitive equity. Better get used to it. It’s not going away.

trust me my man(or women) I already know the facts. Doesn’t mean that I like it. I accept it which is why I said “it is what it is”. For me personally I just would like if there was some type of rule where schools can only drop a certain amount of divisions with how they run their point system. Schools such as Branham who had one of those “magical seasons” that got them that far for the second time in probably about 15 years. Branham had one of their best seasons in their school history yet get bumped by an average Milpitas(to a Milpitas standard) season. When small schools get there type of runs I like to see them rewarded. Not “good job now have fun with a 3300+ enrollment school”. I don’t think comparing the average school to the schools in Milpitas’ league is very comparable. Those schools are not the “average small school” if that makes sense. I just think a lot of small schools hit those landmarks very rarely. Yet they’ll continuously get bumped. Coming from a small school coach as myself I just don’t like it.

I Disagree with CDM being Clearly Superior.... Maybe they had more size at the Skill positions and the D1 QB, but Serra was in that game and I feel like if Serra Started the Sophomore Kid instead of the SR coming back from the Injury, they win that game...

CDM had no answer for that Kid Scrambling and it would have been interesting to see how they would have handled him the whole game... The Starter for Serra didn't play bad, but he just couldn't get the Offense going...

Serra and CDM were evenly matched teams... The CIF got that game right... I would say the CIF got 3 out of 5 of the "Big Games" correct...

I agree on CVC and Mack though... Mack was Too High and CVC was Too Low... But the CVC game was only a 10-7 win so you could say those 2 teams were evenly matched...

CDM was the better team that day. Doesn’t mean the match up wasn’t correct I agree with this pairing. Pacific should have been paired with Central both similar sized programs. CVC with SC, even though SC is a small program they are light years ahead of Aquinas in ability to compete with large programs. And last Mack and Aquinas. These games would have been much more competitive across the board except I’m pretty sure SC beats the snot out of CV but their resume to even be there is another debate in itself.

DLS is a much more impressive team than SJB. They do more with much less than the teams they’re facing in the Open from the SSNFL.
why are you more impressed because you are less talented? Have you ever been the best on a team? That is impressive to be the best at what you are period! Is this a participation thing they get credit for?

I hear what you are saying, and agree with the premise... But the CIF got Central and Sierra Canyon Correct as well, That was a good Matchup...

Central has I think like 4,000 students and Sierra Canyon is MD/SJB Junior down there with kids coming in from all over.... Sierra Canyon was borderline D1 down there this year and will likely be next year...

If Anything they should have flipped MACK and CVC, or Put One of those teams down in 3AA and Put CN in the 2AA or 2A Spot...

We all know that CVC was not a great team this year and should not have been in the mix... But Maybe Aquinas should not have been either...

The Reality is, with so many SBG's and no real way to play it out on the field, this is what we have...

S. Canyon Is only pushed up because they can compete. Reality is however they are a school of about 1000 kids coed and I think K-12 to boot. So yes they have talent but that talent is forced to play both sides of the ball which is huge. Flipping Mack and CV would have been better than CV playing a D5 champ, that game was ridiculous on many levels. And Correct CV wasn’t very good and shouldn’t have been there it makes Ca. Football look bad along with 14 state champs or whatever it is.

I know for sure I’m not impressed with you or your knuckle dragger attitude. Probably a Yankee fan too and if I have to explain it to you, it won’t penetrate. You’ll go away in a week and come back again next year to brag about how you beat up on a 3rd grader. Good luck in prison.
