Sophomore fill-in paces University in Div. IV win over Fortuna

Randy Bessolo recognized he was repeating a coaches’ cliche, but frankly, it was just too fitting.

“Next man up,” said the University boys basketball coach.

Charley Moore, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, replaced injured starter and second-leading scorer Max Fried and scored a career-high 20 points and had eight rebounds Wednesday, leading the fourth-seeded Red Devils to a 74-55 win over Fortuna in a North Coast Section Division IV playoff game at Kezar Pavilion.

Fried injured his knee in a Bay Counties League playoff win and unless University makes it to the state final, he’s out for the season.

Bessolo offered a challenge to his team to make up for Fried, which is no small order. The 6-3 sophomore is the team’s top rebounder, assist man and defender.

“Max is our version of Draymond Green,” Bessolo said. “I put out the challenge to everyone, thinking we needed several players to put up those kind of numbers. Instead, Charley did most of them himself.”

With his team down 12-7, Moore hit two of his three three-pointers by the end of the first quarter. At halftime, University led by 14 and increased the margin to 27 by the fourth quarter.

Moore, who usually comes off the bench, started in Fried’s place and Jared Battat, in Moore’s place as a go-to reserve, contributed 10 points.

Julian Manyika (11 points) and Spencer Spivy (10) were other big contributors for University, which now takes on BCL rival Stuart Hall on Saturday, also at Kezar Pavilion. The winner of that game automatically qualifies for the CIF Northern California tournament.

Bessolo said he liked his chances of a deep state run with Fried, who partially tore an anterior cruciate ligament.

“Now, it’s going to be very challenging,” he said. “But that’s OK. We’re a very young team and frankly, we’re ahead of schedule.”

Lick-Wilmerding 70, McKinleyville 62: Zachary Johnson had 21 points, Avi Leung 17, Chip Thompson 11 and Walter Lum 10 as sixth-seeded Lick (22-7) built a 23-point lead in the third quarter before coasting to a D4 home victory.

Lick, coming off a surprising BCL playoff title, now travels to third-seeded Marin Catholic-Kentfield (19-10), a 71-55 winner over visiting Fort Bragg (12-16). Tip-off is 7 p.m. Saturday.

Mason Sand led all scorers with 24 points for McKinleyville (16-11).

Stuart Hall 54, John Swett-Crockett 47: Sean Ingoglia had 17 points and Darna Stewart 12 as fifth-seeded Stuart Hall (21-7) won a tough matchup at Kezar Pavilion over 12th-seeded Swett (16-11). Stuart Hall and University, which split two meetings, play at 7 p.m. Saturday at Kezar Pavilion.

Other games: In other D4 boys play, second-seeded St. Patrick-St. Vincent of Vallejo (22-6) breezed past Gateway 79-34 and now plays 10th-seeded Piedmont (12-15), which won at seventh-seed Arcata 61-51. Top-seeded St. Joseph Notre Dame-Alameda (27-1), which had a first-round bye, will host Healdsburg in quarterfinal play. … In D5 boys action, 10th-seeded Urban (12-16) won at seventh-seeded Sonoma Academy 68-38, and 12th-seeded Clear Lake (14-14) traveled to upset fifth-seeded Berean Christian-Walnut Creek 63-55. ... In D5 girls play, 16th-seeded Upper Lake (16-11) shocked top-seeded and host Convent of the Sacred Heart 58-56. Convent finished 21-5.

If Clear Lake can pull another upset tomorrow night against Bentley there could be the first ever(I'm assuming here) NCL 1 vs NCL 1 semi final in D-5 if Cloverdale holds serve. Public schools usually get handled year in and year out by the private schools in the lower divisions so this would be fun to see.
