Went to Oakland Tech tonight. Their big three of Boum, Campbell and Davis is as good as any. Boum sat out the first quarter but scored 22 in the three he did play. Davis, the big man, had 18. He doesn't look intimidating at first sight since he's a bit hunched over, but his play is intimidating. Some huge dunks and blocks. He rebounds with authority. He and LaShells will square off inside Saturday, and it'll be a great battle in the post. Oakland Tech had 29 in the final quarter tonight.

Dougherty hung around for three quarters, only trailing 39-36 after 3. They just couldn't hit a shot all night. Impressive for such a new program to make it to the state tournament. It'll be fun to see them and Dublin in the EBAL.

D1 Nor Cal is so watered down this year a very a good, but not definitely not great team from Nor Cal will likely face Redondo Union for the State Title. I don't see it being closer than 15 points in that final. The Open Division is a crap shoot and all games are worth watching.

what the hell happened in D2 last night in the south? #1 Taft and #2 Cantrell lose in the first round to #16/#15. Don't think I've ever seen that.
Its funny you mention Oak tech. Nobody all year has said much about them yet they are quietly 28-3 and I would not be surprised if they knock off MV. They have good size and some really good players/athletes.

Oak tech is 40 in the state and MV is 65. So Oak Tech doesn't get much love on this board but at least Maxpreps has them successful. I heard that they toyed with DV. After the first quarter they scored at will and defended properly. Last 3 quarters was 62 to 36. That suggests the Oak Tech coach measured DV in the first quarter and then went in for the kill. Interesting the lack of hype around Oak Tech but obviously Tech can play. I think MV needs huge games from the post player, Fadal and Rust to make it interesting.

Location/date of this matchup?
Thanks.....

Tech might be too quick and athletic for MV. Always tough to play MV at there place though. But yeah not a lot of love for a team that is obviously good.

My sleeper round 2 pick is Whitney upsetting Mitty. I'm just not that sold on Mitty without Kone. If the game is called tight meaning no hand checks and holding I think Whitney wins. If its a wrestling match like we see in WCAL the game will go to Mitty.

In the south Cantwell should have never been a 2 seed. They were 16-14 and playing a team ECR who had lost 3 games in a row coming in and who are now 14-15.
If you look at my post about state playoffs i didnt even mention Cantwell.
As for Taft losing , i dont think ive ever seen a 16 seed with a record of 29-5 like Temecula was. Probably deserved better and a tough break for Taft

Whitney over Mitty would be quite the upset no doubt. Tough for Whitney to travel all the way down to San Jose and win a game in that environment (Mitty has a nice home court advantage in that gym of theirs). I've been impressed by Mitty ever since Kone went down as they almost seem to be playing better without him as others have stepped up. Kennedy is a heck of a coach as well.

Concrete, the game is at Monte Vista in Danville. Leave for it early. Traffic is tough on 680 at the dinner hour

LL, I think you are right about Tech's athleticism vs. MV. But Fadal is as athletic as they are so if he can get hot and avoid being locked up that gives MV a chance. Playing at home helps, and having the MV coach helps, having played a tough schedule helps. This should be a really entertaining match up.

The teams in Div 1 that lost all played weak schedules. Tougher teams with more losses (generally) are still in it. Can't hide in the play offs

Oakland Tech was in the Top 20 for NorCal (believe they got up to 14 or 15) but then lost two games to McClymonds down the stretch. Good team with inside/outside balance. I'll still take Monte Vista in this matchup, but it could be the best game on Saturday night.

Getting up and/or down 680 shouldn't be all that bad on a Saturday, dinner hour or not... But you never know with traffic around here.

Whitney going into Mitty would be a huge upset. I know. Kennedy is as good as they get. If its physical and mitty can play that style without getting in foul trouble they will prevail.

Crazy about Taft but yeah who is a 29-5 16th seed? What the heck. Well, its the playoffs and things get interesting.

In D1 dougherty was a 25-3 11th (lowest) seed. They were crushed so the committee probably got it right but they were seeded behind Piedmont hills and oak grove. Both of those teams much lower in max prep state ranks.

Most likely based on the fact they didn't make it to the section semis and only got in as a backfill due to DLS moving up the Open division. Any higher seeding would have been a slap in the face to PH or OG. Had DV made it to the section finals, they would have had a much higher seed and a home game like MV got. I believe they try to give all section finalists a home game and make the semifinal losers go on the road if possible, regardless of max prep state rankings.

thanks Observer. That makes sense. I didn't intend to dis PH or OG. I thought the seedings actually made sense in the Norcals. Mcclymonds was seeded ahead of Tech even though Tech is higher ranked in maxpreps, mainly b/c MCLY beat Tech twice towards the end of season.

It seems that the Max prep ranking system is off though. Berkeley and Dublin both are rated below DV despite having wins over DV. Same with McClymonds vs Tech. It looks like early won loss record gets a team rated highly, and once rated highly, they are punished less later on for losing.
