Norcal Small Schools Open Division

I like the way you think NorCal!!! That is the mindset I am using for the Sutter Orland game

It will be a great game. Long range forecasts are calling for rain next Saturday as well

Maybe. Still a lot of playoffs to go, and I'm sure MC will have their say in the process. Palma, or other small school from CCS D3 will be in the discussion.
MC vs CN finals will be a good one & will defiantly decide it who goes to the small open game.

Do I understand correctly that the winner of the CN/Fortuna game gets the host/home game in the section finals?

On the NCS website....it says that because of an undue influence violation that Marin Catholic cannot host the section finals.

Can anyone confirm this?

CN would host at Rancho Cotate HS if I'm not mistaken.

Does anyone know where the game would be if Fortuna wins?

Good MC is a terrible place for a section final, good riddance anywhere but there for a day game

I checked upcoming games and the game doesn't show up on NFHSNetwork.com. Interestingly there is an ad on CIFCCS.org site but only DV game is listed so far.

Anyone know if this game is going to be streamed? Im shocked NFHS Network went with a CCS DV semifinal game. Maybe the cube will stream it.

I think NFHS Network has an exclusive contract with each section, whereas the Cube has agreements with each school. The playoffs are all considered "section" games.

On NFHSNetwork.com cany of the SJS games are listed (Folsom v St Mary's, DelOro v Granite Bay, Elk Grove, etc.) and NS (Sutter v Orland), but essNCS and CCS games. I noticed some of the games were added since I checked yesterday, so maybe more will be added. Only CCS game listed so far is Carmel).

Sutter is still alive this season for the section title so not much can be said yet. However I can tell you that Sutter will be very good again and a favorite starting next season. They open with Palma and have Bear River, Ripon and decided after all the travel from this season to stay closer to home and play a much improved Marysville team and Dixon. They are starting 2 sophs and 5 Jrs on offense and 1 soph and 7 Jrs on defense this season. The JV team this season went 10-0, gave up 19 points total with NO rushing TDs allowed all season, 6 shut outs on defense and scored 370 points on offense. They played EC (shutout) home, Palma (shutout), Capital Christian (6pts Kick return), Ripon(7pts) and Bear River(12pts) all on the road for their pre season. The only points scored against them in 5 league games was 1 kick off return. The varsity will be loaded next season. Even though Sutter platoons there will still be players that have started their whole lives finding it hard to get playing time. Just giving everyone a glimpse of Sutter's future.

My God Farm,
Do you sleep with your Sutter jersey on? Sutter struggled this year because they are losing players from Yuba City because they are choosing to go to River Valley where they should be going in the first place. And JV wins mean nothing when it comes to the next year on varsity. Also, scheduling a Marysville and Dixon teams that Sutter should beat easily does not impress. How about scheduling Paradise, River Valley, Yuba City or Enterprise.

Its ok thatch. I am a homer!!! But to seriously answer your question Sutter just got off a 2 year home and home with Enterprise in which they split. Sutter has played both YC and RV in the past and YC has told them they are good with the schedule they have. I have personally always wanted to face Paradise but I don't make the schedule. And RV. When the police have to be called to a RV / Sutter frosh game just think what could happen to a Varsity game. Not worth it. Sutter has decided to play out of section games for pre season. As far as the kids goes, this years Sutter frosh class is one of the biggest classes they have had. They must be doing something right for they still have a full compliment of freshman sports which unfortunately schools much bigger than them don't. RV with 1800 students could not even field a frosh baseball team this past spring. Most importantly the Jr program is full and still competing and winning. Back to the schedule. Out of section games gives the kids trips and a chance to play in venues that most teams that stay in section just don't get. The players love the change of scenery year in and year out. As far as your JV comment goes, you are right, it does not always equate but I will guarantee you that crappy frosh and crappy JV teams generate far more crappy varsity teams than good frosh and good JV teams do. One thing you cannot rule out is the fact that Sutter football per the Appeal Democrat has played in 14 of the last 15 section semis or better and 2 Nor Cal Regional Bowl games. I would say they really don't need to change much. Happy Thanksgiving to you and to everyone else out there. I am off to watch the East Nicholas Section title game. Go Spartans

Top Open candidates:

Palma lost a close game to Riordan, so they're out. Central Catholic, the clear number one choice, has a big rematch with Oakdale in SJS D3 Final. Win, they're in. Lose, they're out. If CC wins, they will likely get the winner of NCS D4. If CC loses, NCS D4 is in, and either SHP or McClymonds would likely be the favorites for the other spot.

CC if they beat Oakdale again & the winner of the NCS D4 game vs Marin Catholic & Cardinal Newman. Riordan is very good, but 3 losses takes them out of contention. McClymomds is way out this year. Exciting finish.

Riordan's enrollment is over 1250 so they can't be considered for Small School Open. But if by chance Sacred Heart Prep beat Riordan this weekend, they would be a contender.

If both CC and CN get knocked out this weekend, MC would be an obvious leading contender. Also, there is Sonora (SJS D5), McClymonds (next after Sonora according the Calpreps ratings), Sutter (NS D3), Bradshaw Christian (SJS D6), Berean Christian (NCS D5 contender) and Immanuel (CS D5 contender).

I got Newman vs Central Catholic. Just like back in the day when these teams battled it out. Central Catholic would come in a 10 pt favorite but you never know…. Anybody have an idea of where they would play this game?

Somewhere in sac would be a fair drive for both teams, but there's 2 big games to win for CCand CN/MC first. Sac st. would be cool.

Why is there a regional game for the small school open but not large open? Obviously we all know who the top team is in NorCal and we know why there is no regional game for large open. If a team dominates the small school open regional game for a few years will teams begin to complain about having to play in that game?

Good question. Large school open is the DLS rule, and apparently it's been decided it's unfair for any team to try and compete with them. Small school open is similar with CC, but teams like CN, MC, SHP, PALMA would want the matchup. Glad it's set up with a playoff. Rankings and cal preps ratings, while useful to an extent, aren't great at comparing teams in different sections ( or even different leagues, for that matter), while the head to head matchup settles everything.

Too true - but for now, if Small School Open went straight to state, there would be one team for North and South left without a slot. As it is now, NorCal has to have a play-in game.

Yes, after I thought about it for a while, it possibly comes down to the overall number of teams advancing to the regionals... much to the relief of the CIF.

enrollmentat SHP about 530 ..50/50 coed... very impressive for what they do on the field

That might have merit if the small school enrollment size was still under 500, but with the increased number, there is a handful of schools that would be very competitive with CC that fall within the new enrollment guidelines, but are over 500, so they didn't qualify for small school last year and didn't get the opportunity to play them. The biggest injustice with the old set-up was when SHP won CCS Open, but stayed home
