Need some clarification from the SJS experts. Is Modesto Christian Division 1 this year? If yes, the SJS Division 1 is really loaded. Folsom, Sheldon, Wood Creek, Jesuit, Granite Bay, and Modesto Christian. How many SJS Division 1 teams can be pulled up to the Open Division? If the answer is only two, that leaves the Open Division one short of the projected eight participants in Open.

DLS (NCS)
Moreau Cath. (NCS)
Sacramento (SJS)
St. Francis (CCS)
Serra (CCS)
Two SJS Division 1 teams. My guess is Folsom and Modesto Christian
The eighth spot could be filled by Freedom (NCS), Salesian (NCS), or Oakland Tech (OAL).

Let me know your thoughts.

I don't think Freedom qualifies, so they would have to opt in to be considered for the Open. They might just decide to stay put in D1 since they've never won anything (that I can recall).

I don't think Tech qualifies for Open nor would they be put in there. D1 could really open up for a team like Tech with likely two teams from the SJS moving up along with DLS

Streak, with Sheldon, Modesto Christian and Folsom all in SJS don't you think it might be possible if they all make it to the semi-finals that all 3 might go to open? Just wondering, don't know, but along with Sac High that could be the 4 from SJS. I do not think Capital Christian will opt up even if they win D3. Is there a rule that only 2 can go from D1?

I think all 3 of those teams in D1 should go up if you fill out a full bracket, but it is hard to take a team that didn't make the section finals. Also, SJS seems to have a lot of pull in these meetings and probably will fight hard not to have four teams go up.

Capital is eligible if they win the section. Played in three straight regional finals. However, they have played themselves out of the Open talk which should turn out to be a good thing for them

That makes sense. Thanks for your input. SJS D1 will be brutal this year but if they only take the top 2 from D1 to open that means there will be 2 very good teams left from SJS for the state D1 division. I am wondering if Sac High will blow through the D2 division like they have been beating everyone in Sacramento this year. some people I talk to think they may be the best team in the section.

Wouldn't it be nice if we had one school that could rep Nor Cal in open like DLS in football and everyone else plays in their division. I know it is not practical up here cause of the different sections but if every one had an open division in each section we could just pick the one open winner with the best shot against So Cal.

My open top 8 has currently been: Moreau, De La, St. Francis, Serra, Modesto, Sac High, Folsom and Sheldon... but if they don't take all 3 SJS D1 teams (take the 2 finalists and put whoever is left out in D1), who gets the 8th open slot?

Salesian?

Any other serious candidates?

It's my understanding that CIF now wants there to be 8 teams in both the North and South, though you are correct that the brackets were not filled the first couple of years. I'm not sure it is mandated, but this year the NorCal bracket should have 8 teams capable of winning it as opposed to BOD and the field last year.
