This is a really interesting piece of news. If the state is backing down, then this should go smoothly -- and county health departments have already buckled on football ...

Big indeed.

Student-athletes in all but a handful of California’s 58 counties will be allowed under state rules to play indoor sports, however local counties and school districts will still have the option to opt out of the agreement, Grebing said. For the majority of those athletes and coaches in counties with case rates between 7 and 14 per 100,000, they will be subject to the same weekly testing requirement as high-contact outdoor sports.

California will only provide free testing for those high-contact outdoor sports athletes and coaches, as it outlined in new guidance this week. For newly approved indoor sports, athletes and coaches will have to schedule tests through their insurance providers or a private company that Grebing said agreed to provide free testing for all indoor sports participants statewide.

Much like football, basketball and other indoor sports are in a better spot than a few weeks ago, but still a lot of questions left without easy answers. Tough part is it will fall on athletic directors and coaches to sort it out, including sharing facilities.
