GoBears, I appreciate your mature, well thought out post. I'm sure at the time your son thought the world was about to end when he realized he lost a season of baseball, but I suspect he's a better man for it today. I also like that rather than hate on Mr. Lemmon you realize that it wasn't personal, it was simply Mr. Lemmon doing his job.
The number of kids that move on and get paid for playing professional sports is about the same as a grain of sand on the beach. Therefore, what's the value of team sports? IMO there are three main things that make teams sports so valuable. 1) The fun the kids have playing them and the friendships they form, 2) the fun friends and family have watching them and 3) most important are the life lessons kids learn by playing them. Your son learned one of the most important life lessons IMO, consequence for our actions. In today's world I think that's what's most wrong with professional sports. An attitude of all about me in team sports and accountability.
I know my own son is starting to show way more maturity and I attribute much of that to him playing ten years of tackle football and eight years of organized baseball. He's blessed(and so are we)that he will be allowed to play four more years of football and get a degree from a great college to support him in his "old age".
At the end of the day we love these kids, we raise them up and if we're lucky we have grandchildren to play with until we meet our maker. With all that said, Friday nights will never ever be the same........................
