SoCal D1 champ Chino Hills has sure had an interesting week...

They led Pasadena at one point by 30 on Tuesday, coughed that big lead up, and just hung on to win by 3 on Tuesday...

Then Saturday, they were down 49-40 starting the 4th quarter vs. St. John Bosco, then outscored 'em 27-2 in the 4th to win 67-51.

Wow.

They're the heavy favorites against LL because of their size advantage. Legit big man struggle to guard big O, LL is going to try stopping him with someone that's giving up a whole 5 inches.

And if they double O (which still won't do much), they're gonna struggle against Chino's second best player whose as tall as LL's biggest player. In addition to that, Chino has some very very good guard play too which is LL's biggest strength.

Chino Hills are legit, it's gonna take alot to take them down.

Happy for the Chino Hills kids and coach who have gone through all the drama with LaVar over the years. They come out of a tough league that includes Etiwanda and Okongwu is unlike anyone Las Lomas has seen this year. I guess you have to double or triple team him and make the other players beat you. Las Lomas is going to have to shot the 3 well to stay well to stay close and that's typically difficult in big arenas.

Isnt it quite the breath of fresh air to see two public schools battle it out for a title? LL's strength is having pretty much all their guys can hit the 3 and if LL doesnt hit the majority of their 3s, this one will not be close. as they have no real answer for Okongwu. Cant really run up and down with CH since thats their game as well. Just have to hit shots and maybe draw a few cheapy fouls on Okungwu to get him out of the game.

Hmmm; there is still time to breakdown CH. They played 36 games this season with a 25-11 record. 2 of their losses were league games on the road to Upland and Los Osos. Los Osos doesn't list their players height but the scores vs Los Osos were 79-63 win and 65-66 loss. Also, the scores vs Upland were 63-64 loss and 58-47 win. Upland's tallest players are listed at 6'4" however 3 players are listed above 200 lbs. with one listed at 260 lbs. Both losses were one point defeats against teams with 3-7 and 2-8 league records. I know the competition is tough down South but neither of those teams are favored over LL. Lastly, run and gun is up for grabs as who does it the best this year between CH and LL. Not quite a blowout yet because CH is not around the corner from Sacramento.

I think the key to this for LL is "What can they do about Okongwu?", as said above. But I don't think's about stopping his offense, it's much more dealing with his size and shot-blocking ability.

After all, LL's first loss this year was to Dishon Jackson (not nearly as good as Okongwu, but defensively somewhat similar with length and all) and SPSV. Jackson made LL miss a ton of inside shots, blocked a few, and sometimes LL missed 'em cuz they thought Jackson was close-by when he wasn't.

For LL to have success against Chino Hills, they will have to avoid the "big-man-coming-to-swat-me" intimidation factor. I'm not so sure they can, but I hope so... And, of course, they will have to have a strong day shooting the rock from outside, another tall order.

Chino Hills is not in the OPEN for a reason. The big fellas good but he’s not dropping 50 on anybody so he’s human. Chino Hills doesn’t play much defense either which is why the can go up 30 and let a team back in the game. It’s a very winnable game for Las Lomas. They have to control the tempo of the game, run when they have the opportunity but also run sets and make Chino Hills play some defense. Las Lomas has to make shots but so does Chino Hills! I got Las Lomas by 7.

I've never seen Okongwu play in a conventional offense / defense only the helter skelter style of play from year's past where he often didn't make it over half-court offensively. Point being in that I don't know if he has a good or great post game. Defensively he'll be a major force but not sure if he's all that offensive-wise. Chino aren't world-beaters but they like Las Lomas are peaking at the right time - should be a good game.

The Open Division just started 5 years ago and here are the results:
OPEN->
2017 74-67 South
2016 70-50 South [Chino Hill over DLS with a Starting guard in the NBA]
2015 65-54 North [BOD over Mater Dei]
2014 71-61 South [Mater Dei over BOD]
2013 50-45 South

The D1 Division->
2017 54-45 South [Roosevelt over Logan who loss 1 of 2 top scorers in 1st qt]
2016 68-53 South
2015 79-71 North [San Ramon Valley over Chino Hills]
2014 66-55 North [Monte Vista over Centennial]
2013 73-57 North [Pleasant Grove]

in the D1 Division the games are winnable for the North.

In NorCal the competitive equity system in place for the first time strengthens D1 - case in point Las Lomas is a D2 team - but significantly lessens D2 and lower divisions making NorCal less competitive in those divisions.

I am starting to like the up and down the floor strategy. Las Lomas has had some good test against quality competition. Here are some sample games the second half of the season:

LL 83 – CVC 75

LL 79 - Moreau 72

BOD 65 – LL 58

LL 65 – Franklin 59

LL 69 – Dublin 66

LL 84 – Mitty 70

Let’s run up the score, it’s the finals exam; State Championship. Just Stats;

Chino Hills / OPP PPG = 65.72

1st Qtr. – 15.7; 2nd Qtr. – 16.6; 3rd Qtr. – 22.2; 4th Qtr. – 20.3 = Final Avg 73.8

Las Lomas / OPP PPG = 53.67

1st Qtr. – 17.3; 2nd Qtr. – 17.4; 3rd Qtr. – 18.1; 4th Qtr. – 16.2 = Final Avg 68.6

Chino Hills has 25 wins; who has Chino Hills beat this year that’s better then Las Lomas?

Las Lomas is over the big arena fear. Chino Hills beat the teams they were suppose to beat and loss games against top competition. There is something about open running with minimum defense, it feels like the 3 home games against CVC, Dublin and Mitty.

THIS IS CHINO HILLS:

Chino Hills lost to an under dog 63-64 on 1/16/18. Chino Hill’s #5 A top player is missing from this game.
