With the looming closure of Mercy HS, nearby Riordan is reportedly examining the possibility of adding the Mercy girls to the all-boys campus. Mercy, which opened in the 1950s on 19th Avenue near SF State, has just 220 female pupils currently. It is set to close in June.

they are looking into it. maybe 2 campuses for the high school. Riordan has always needed additional space.

The only hurdle to this plan is the approval of the Archdiocese. Riordan has tried unsuccessfully in the past to go co ed as it has been denied by the Archdiocese. So we shall see.

San Domenico went from All-Girl to Co-Ed, and it saved the school

Stuart Hall and Convent students have a class or two together every semester, so while the Hall is technically all-boys, there is a difference there. Honestly the relationship probably saved the Hall from closing down a couple of years ago.

SI used to be all boys, then switched to Co-Ed. List goes on and on. I'm happy that Riordan is exploring this possibility. Shows they care about getting kids a quality education.

Just so you know Stuart Halland Convent have essentially become one school based on their latest marketing materials

And my son's 8th grade high school presentation, they presented together as one where when his older brother was in 8th grade they presented separately.

I am actually a graduate of the class of 1991 at SH. My class was the first four year coed class at the school. At the time Brother Chris Brady(coincidentally he has a famous nephew with the same last name) and a Sister who I forget her name took a tremendous risk combining SH and Cathedral, many felt it would not work. It did and not only that the earthquake made ST Rose unsafe so my senior year was a blessing. We have a whole set of new girls in my class. SI eventually took the step, and the only thing I would say that would be tough for riordan is property and space. My uncle who at one time was the head of real estate for the archdiocese said in order to survive they would have to go coed. Riordan has done a terrific job being all boys, and i hope they stay that way since you can only so many kids and the balance would definitely hurt the athletic side of things. In my opinion.

If a move to a coed situation makes solid fiscal sense for Riordan (and the authorities OK it), why not do it?
Would need more information, see the business plan and as you said if it makes solid fiscal sense. How it it will affect male admission going forward, will they still be admitting the same amount or will it be cut down now to accommodate being able to have male and females on campus. With all due respect this is a subject not to be discussed on a Sports Board LOL but I get why it was brought up here....

Agree. Lots of factors of what means fiscal sense for both of these schools to sustain themselves. My take, if you do "combine" schools - keep it all-boys and all-girls on their respective campuses, but certainly combine its resources to help each "school". Convert Mercy's convent to dorms to accommodate boarding students. Create and/or sharpen its curriculum specifically for the interests of young woman entering our society to be successful, similar to what Riordan has done in attracting its young men with its boarding school, RSP, STEAM, music and arts and athletics programs. This will be my only comment on this. Going to be a tough decision. Good luck to both schools.

Just received an email to the Crusader Alumni announcing that starting next fall, Archbishop Riordan will become a co-educational institution. More details to follow...

After last nights game, I truly believe the Riordan Skippers have inside track to WCAL basketball title in their last year in the WCAL. Lots of depth. Moving to West Bay Skyline league with Notre Dame Belmont, Mercy Burlingame, Castilleja, etc.

Sing from the top of the (gender-neutral) mountain......(at a higher octave, of course).

I demand the mascot be changed from Crusaders to Bulls! Since absorbing the Cows is coming, this is a natural transition :)

Cardinal Newman went coed and accepted the Ursuline girls (after its close). There have been some growing pains early on like no place for the girls to change/shower (locker rooms) and some old school "good ol boys" mindset from some of the older male faculty at 1st. I'm sure Riordan will have similar issues to begin until everybody gets on the same page.

As a CN alumni the girls have been great and it's a definite positive upgrade to the school. I'm very glad CN took this step and I would suggest to those at Riordan who may be against to just give it time and you will see the positives also.

LMAO!!!! Yes!!! Who remembers the Cattle Crossing sign on 19th Ave in front of Mercy HS? It was up for awhile...classic!!

If reports true, I would give it a thumbs up. Change is inevitable. Turning Riordan into co-ed can only foster positive growth. You wont see that sight of boys hanging out at the entrance on 19th anymore :)
Well, several of the former all boys schools in the East Bay made this move some years ago.Depending on how much space in terms of a total enrollment number, it can impact the football program by enrolling less boys and more girls to balance out the student body. While that is happening, football usually declines a bit as the lesser number of boys makes an impact

Can Riordan get must worst in football? I am sure (hope) their new field will at least be a help. Riordan had a niche, all boys, and assistance for kids who need a bit more help - a quality mantra. I am sure things will work out in long run.

So there was an article in sfgate that apparently some parents are not too pleased about this and want it to remain an All-Boys school.

It's tough for me, growing up at an All-Boys school, its completely different than coed. You are more able to be yourself, not be so self-conscience. I know for the Girls school Convent, a lot of girls felt comfortable not wearing make up somedays. I want the girls from Mercy to have somewhere to go, but adding that many more students could affect the education of those currently enrolled.

We will see what ends up happening. I am officially torn on this topic.

This equation is solved easily. Riordan and SH football cannot be competitive at the same time. When one is "good" it is because all your good football players are at one school while the other suffers from the lack of talent. Not sure what we'll see next year as theres only one way to go for SH after a winless season.
