#12 Pleasant Grove (6-4) @ #5 Monterey Trail (9-1)

How did St. Mary's get seeded higher than Monterey Trail?

Good question! Like I have said, trying to guess or hold SJS playoff committee to follow their rules is bewildering.

MT is higher ranked in Calpreps/MaxPreps, yet even MaxPreps had SM seeded higher as if 10/29:

https://www.maxpreps.com/m/news/AZy...ool-football-playoff-projections---oct-29.htm

I missed the early part of the NFHS network broadcast that may have shared the reasoning. Maybe someone who watched it can provide some insight?

Or feel free to email the SJS assistant commissioner, Will DeBoard, who was on the broadcast @
wdeboard@cifsjs.org. He shared that he’s open to answer any questions.

It's easy. The Section puts Monterey Trail football into a weak league against MT's wishes. Then the Section says that MT's record isn't good enough because they only won a weak league. Forgot the unbiased computer models that say MT is top 3 inthe section.

Still, you just line up and play football. No complaints come Monday practice.

Exactly. You just need to get after it and prove them wrong. Good motivation. D1 is going to be very competitive this year. Even Folsom who has steam rolled most needs to show up because teams like OR know they can compete.

This is a great bracket. I see Lincoln, MT, Davis and Del Oro in first round. Second Round upset: Davis over Inderkum. St. Mary's over MT. OR over Del Oro. Finals: Folsom v OR. This one will not be as close as the first meeting.

Davis is loaded. Their offensive line is the biggest in the section lead by a left tackle who is 6'9 330. Right Tackle is 6'3 270. Center is 6'3 320. The little guys are 6-1 220 at Left guard, and Right Guard is 5-11 250. Their H back goes 6' 235. Their skill guys are players as well. their RB is 6' 200lb zone runner. Their two wide outs are very athletic along with their scat back who can play RB as well. Their Defense is stout. Special teams are very good. They are a very good football team.

We shall see how they do this week against Gregori.

The disrespect for Inderkum always pick up around this time of year. I just hope Davis can hang around the first and second quarter because Inderkum will be clicking on all cylinders . If Davis blink it won’t be close remember this is the playoffs no Cinderella story. Davis support will travel well, both sides will be full. Inderkum isn’t losing a first round playoff game.

The four games this week all have some intrigue especially Del Oro-Turlock and Edison-Lincoln.

Inderkum hasn’t been “clicking on all cylinders” for weeks.

For what it is worth, Cal Preps says it's Inderkum 34 Davis 31 on a neutral field. Basically,a toss up.

However, styles make macth-ups, so it really comes down to how well Inderkum will handle Davis's size and how well Davis can minimize Inderkum's speed and scheme advantage.

Has Davis played a Wing-T team yet this season? Always a tough offense to prepare for without seeing it in a prior game. Inderkum has definitely seen multiple versions of Davis's offense.

Can't wait for tomorrow night. Turlock will be a tough game for DO but I am hoping for some more DO playoff magic and a mistake free game, but I suspect this game will be close.

Cal 14-So Davis beats Inderkum?

Streak one-Does Davis beat Inderkum?

Inderkum's CalPreps rating is 40.2, but none of their results over the last 4 games have lived up to that number. I don't know who wins in a game against Davis, but I do know that the Blue Devils are better than anyone the Tigers have seen in a while.

It may very well be that Inderkum has just been bored after facing better competition earlier in the season, but a prospective top 5 SJS team probably shouldn't be struggling to beat Roseville.

I don’t know for certain but I think Inderkum has been pretty banged up. Not sure if it has improved and will continue to do so with a bye week or if it is a lingering problem.

That would be a good explanation... and could be their reason for falling to Davis. At least they get an extra week to heal.

Agreed. Turlock’s OL is huge. They have a 6-7 320 lb OT and their strong OG is huge too. They flip their OL to strength a la Casey Taylor. But this DO squad has heart. It should be a good game.

DO travels well which is why I believe is partly to do with CIF decision for DO to travel. Seen this year in and year out except for few years when DO had good W/L record, good pre-season scheduling and strong rating.

I’ll be making the trek.

Milage varies with big lines. If big but not skilled/disciplined then is a non factor. If big skilled and disciplined ala DLS typical lines then different story. From film looks like Turlock’s big guys are decent.

Expect the boys to be fired up for this one after last week and of course facing elimination.

From what I understand they've been without their starting ILBs....I'm pretty sure those guys have offensive responsibilities as well that they might be missing. That league will also make some noise in the playoffs. CVC has great coaching staffs and made a lot of noise in the playoffs last year and should this year as well. Delta SFL and CVC are all tough Sacramento leagues that beat up on each other.

Yea, I am less concerned about size but it is always something you can't help notice. Most weeks, we line up against lines that are bigger than us. It's just a fact of life with DO football. The O line coach for DO is VERY good and gets the most out of his kids. These feels like a low scoring close game unless someone forces some early turnovers for scores and the kids get down early.

No more easy first round matchups....

Inderkum will be at full strength come next week minus the injury we had week 0 on the opening kickoff to probably our most dynamic player. He is trying to make a comeback but it will be slim chance at best. Our injuries have been on the defensive side of the ball. We had starting MLB's out for multiple weeks which had us have to shift around players and teach on the fly. The defense scored a touchdown in each of the last 4 games even with the injuries. The last 4 games for us have been tough. RV has a tremendous line, and is very well coached. Antelope has skill players to match us. Yuba is as big and physical as we have seen all year. Roseville was playing in their super bowl with a chance to win a league title. Roseville has a tremendous coaching staff. Davis if they get the win tonight will be the toughest team we have seen.

Look at the coaching staffs we played against the last 4 weeks. Humphers/MCfadden Humphers has won multiple section titles. Ray who has had great teams and made deep runs in the playoffs. Gingery who has won titles in the north section. Cattalico who has won multiple section titles. You don't think they had their teams ready to beat us. :)

Zebs,

Nope, according to guys on this site Inderkum is inept and not "clicking" due to scoreboard watching and not seeing games or film.

I think it is a fair point to look at scores that are closer than expected. Is the competition higher than people think? Will certain players be back next week? Very possible.

However, the original premise isn’t without some merit

Well, it is possible that Inderkum really is clicking on all cylinders, but that they just aren't actually as good as we thought.

You get to choose one, but not both.

Oh, and I did see part of the game against Antelope. They weren't dominating.

Cal 14,

We'll find out in a next Friday night. I look forward to refuting your claim and how you enjoy your crow served.

I had posted earlier this week in the D2 thread wishing Indy success through the playoffs somehow thinking Indy was in D2. As most know I’m a DO homer. What a bone head :(that I did not realize Indy is in D1 and not D2 so... I’ll modify my wish for Indy success. I wish Indy success to State if/when DO is eliminated;):).

let’s go DO and get the W in Turlock!

Reading comprehension not your strength?

I never said that Davis would beat Inderkum. I simply stated that the recent results for the Tigers would not indicate that they're "firing on all cylinders", and even gave a consideration that they may have been taking their opponents for granted a little. Flat-out, no #6 team in the SJS should be struggling against Roseville, period. I don't understand how anyone could make an opposing argument if the team in question is said to be playing well.

Either the team didn't play well, or they really aren't the #6 (or higher) team in the section. Again, you don't get to choose both.

I'd actually love to see the Tigers do well, but I also have solid respect for Davis.

respectable take Cal14
This why Clemson is looking from the outside in. #JustWinBaby

I actually put Davis as a possible upset of Inderkum. We are talking about a 10-0 vs 9-1. The game will be close. There is no disrespect. I have seen both teams play and think Davis has a legit shot.

Last season, the Section's D1 seedings did not produce any upsets in the bracket. However, the teams were top-heavy last year with only three teams likely to make the finals (Folsom vs. MT or O.R.) and the bracket was seeded true to Cal Preps ratings.

Folsom is still the class of this year's D1 bracket, but the gap (Folsom 36 O.R. 33) is demonstrably closer. There is a solid argument to be made for MANY teams being capable of making the finals if the bracket had fallen in their favor.

Look at it this way: If Oak Ridge, Inderkum, MT, St. Mary's, Davis, Del Oro, Lincoln, and Edison were all in the same league would any of them make it through undefeated? Certainly possible, but not likely. Would any of those teams fail to win a game in that league? Again, certainly possible, but not likely. There is just too much of a "clustering" here to really separate them. Too many "Styles" that create "Match-Up" issues.

LUCKILY, that's what they playoffs are for. Speculation and opinion are fun, but scoreboards tell the only truth that matters.

Good luck tonight, and next Friday as well for all the bye teams.

You may have a best backpedal out of any DB in the region. So, you can insinuate and suggest/hint at something but never say it to stay on the fence. Bravo, way to have an opinion but not really have one or have an opinion but only hint at it and never fully claim it....

Edison looking really good vs Lincoln. As soon as started writing this Lincoln scores on a big run play. Edison up 14-7 with 3:04 left in the first quarter. The Vikings have a lot of speed!
