Sacramento State picks up a pair of 2023 standouts

Sac St. was very lucky tonight on that forward progress call when the QB was clearly still falling forward when the ball was stripped by Idaho.

Big Sky is a grind, nice win even if it was ugly in the second half

I watched that game pretty much start to finish. Sac state rushing attack was insane. 300+ yards on the ground and nearly 6 per carry. O’Hara and Cameron were amazing. Passing game struggled and like I said before if this team gets a QB (which they will) next year.. wow. Defensively they did up almost 400 yards but that Idaho team was impressive. Really fun to see. @ThunderRam , believe 17.5k attendance! Wow. Stingers up

Super glad the Hornets found a way to hang on. They were in control of the game from the get go but slipped late and allowed a gritty Idaho team the opportunity to steal the game. SAC responded to the late game adversity as you’d expect a good team would and got it done.

O’Hara and Skattebo continue to impress.

for what it’s worth this was the first game this year the Hornets didn’t cover the point spread, they were 14 point favorites. I hope they go on to win the Big Sky Conference and have a deep run in the FCS playoffs.

I didn’t even know they kept spreads on fcs. Interesting.
Weber will be tough, that is the champ.

As always Weber is tough 100% admission rate goes a long way and they only have one loss. No team with two conference losses will win the Big Sky this year.

You do know that FCS is D-1? Why wouldn’t they have spreads? Davis has done a good job covering lately. Go Ags!
If you are betting fcs you have issues. I will leave it at that. Of course I know they were d1. This isn’t 1996.

From the time that Sac St took a 24-7 lead until the time they took over the ball trailing 24-28, they ran a total of ZERO running plays. ZERO…NADA….ZILCH!! So what do they do At that point? Exact,y what they should’ve been doing the 3 previous possessions. They finally remember to run. They run 13 straight times and score the game winning TD. Taylor’s record speaks for itself, but sometimes his stubborness is tough to watch. Hornets should’ve won this game by 2 TDs.

Sac St has a tough road ahead. Weber is tough, and UC Davis isn’t getting much fanfare, but has only lost to HIGH QUALITY opponents, in close games.

The whistle had already blown. That said, Sac was lucky to have the ball last. had they lost, 100% blame would’ve been on Taylor. His stubbornness to keep passing was on full display while his best player (Skateboo) didn’t touch the ball for 3 straight possessions. Dunniway is really struggling right now, and Hornets are gonna have to fix that, or play O’Hara more

You clearly aren’t into sports betting. ;)

Fwiw, the Sac State v. Montana game made Scott Van Pelt’s “Bad Beats” segment last week.

As for Weber, I don’t agree they’ll be champs. The Hornets are defending stand-alone conference champs and Weber is gonna have to beat them.

If the Weber long-snapper continues to launch the ball through the end zone 4x times per game for 4 safeties — I really like the Hornets chances in that game….. lmao.

I’m not a bettor, so I’m not offended. But I will say that you’re way off here.

There’s no difference betting Notre Dame or Alabama versus North Dakota State or Sac State. None.

Not everyone cares only about or follows the elites.

I’ve been criticized and mocked on another board for 2nd guessing Coach Taylor because, well, a professional with an actual job can’t ever be wrong apparently.

But as good as he has been and as good as he is, one of his flaws IMO is underutilizing his RB’s and abandoning the run. When he was coaching under Kyle Wittingham and had Zach Moss he wasn’t able to get away with it. But aside from his stint at Utah he has developed a track record for it dating back to his days at Folsom.

Even when he left Folsom, the staff under Richardson underutilized Daniyel Ngata. It’s just part of their offensive philosophy apparently.

IMO it’s why Elijah Dotson left. They were rotating 3-backs every other play and not running it enough. No back could get into any kind of rhythm. I get why Taylor rotated between Dotson, Perkinson and Fulcher, but it still is tough on a bell cow back that is as well-rounded as Dotson.

Earlier this season I had similar gripes with his use of Skattebo. Often Skat was getting only 10-12 touches while O’Hara was getting closer to 20. But things changed several weeks ago after Skat got close to 30 touches (which is too many) and now the balance is better.

It also helps that they are primarily rotating 2 backs versus 3.

IMO to avoid another 1st/2nd round playoff exit Taylor is going to have to commit more to Skattebo and Fulcher and the traditional ground game,

Prior to the start of the season, UCD head coach Dan Hawkins was proclaiming this Aggies team as their best of all time.

IDK about that, but they clearly are pretty good and have just played a gauntlet schedule.

I’m not either. Shocking. I play once in a blue moon but I’ve seen the dark side of that fence.

As for the hornets, I would be very happy with 2-1 over the next 3. UCD is the one that scares me the most. They will be coming off a home game at Idaho which could very well be a loss for them.

Exactly.

Problem with Taylo’s current philosophy is I just don’t think Dunniway is accurate enough. His two games against quality opponents the past two weeks have been abysmal. 5 interceptions isnt gonna get it done. I dont think they can completely abandon Dunniway , but it sure looks obvious he needs to be handing it off more when he is on the field.

Saturdays game plan will be interesting, as Dunniway has got to be struggling with confidence right now. His last three possessions on Saturday were a three and out, and back to back interceptions in the first play of the next two respective drives. To top it off, he then sat on the sideline as O’Hara marched the team down to victory.

I think the difference betting a Notre Dame or Alabama vs a Sac State is information. In this day and age, the difference on information isn’t as big as it used to be, but there is simply MORE information out there for oddsmakers to use in setting lines for the bigger schools/games.
The reality is that for a bettor with some solid insight and knowledge around a particular FCS program, I’d argue there are potentially some small betting opportunities that aren’t there betting the big time power 5 games.

The guy that impresses me is Scatebo. I watched the Sac State/Montana game and after three quarters he had 98 yards and 97 of those were after being hit. Dude is hard to bring down. He reminds me a bit of Joe Protheroe at Cal Poly

Agree. Just a beast be scary if they could throw

I wasn’t coming at it from that angle, but of course you’re right. I’m meant more from the angle of someone enjoying sports betting. In no way is it ridiculous to bet FCS if someone knows the game and enjoys the action versus betting on what are considered more marquee matchups.

Think about all the fans in the remoter North, such as North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, etc. They live and die with their college teams and don’t have pro teams or larger college programs close by and therefore follow the FCS a lot more.

Of course those fans that are gamblers are gonna want to bet on those teams. As is any gambler that is invested in the FCS.

I don’t do a lot of sports betting. I have many close friends that live for it though. So I hear about it all the time. But if I was an avid gambler, I’m certain I’d be betting on many of these top FCS matchups.

Regardless, the main point remains. It’s poor form and uncalled for to label those that bet FCS games as having “problems”. LL is better than that.

Sac state leads at half, and I love that Taylor may be acknowledging that the team just looks more in sync with O’Hara taking the snaps. So while O’Hara is getting most of the snaps so far, I do hope O’Hara stops calling his own number on EVERY option in the 2nd half, and gives the ball to someone else (cough cough…‘Skateboo’) a few more times.

Lets finish Hornets!!

Yeah, I often question whether the RB read is taken away nearly every time they run those plays, but oh well.

O’Hara played fairly well today considering the conditions and opponent. The TD throw he made to Marshel Martin was absolute money.

Hornets defense did what they do, bent but didn’t break completely and was stingy when needed.

I will say the Hornets got very, very lucky on the 3rd and long when Weber looked to have an easy deep TD only to have the receiver bobble the ball and have it intercepted. Same receiver that dropped the ball the play before.

That play goes down differently and who knows.

Also didn’t like game management the final quarter, but in the end they still got a huge W on the road against a top notch opponent.

They almost got even more good fortune as Montana State struggled against NAU and nearly lost. But their QB Tommy Mellott made a game winning bomb while on the run to save their @$$es.

Here’s hoping the Hornets don’t suffer a let down next week and handle business at Portland State.

Hornets dodged a few bullets, absorbed a couples of tough PI calls, but looked to be the better team IMHO. I thought Weber St made a strategic mistake trying that first onside kick, and setting up the Hornets on a short field for what amounted to the game clinching FG. I thought there was still plenty of time to make a stop and get the ball back, seemed to be a lack of faith in his defense.

Bottom line, if Sac wins out (Davis is gonna be a tough game)…they’ll get the #1 seed (now if they can only win a playoff game … or two… or three… )

I agree with you re: the onside kick decision. I‘m all for kicking the onside kick and sacrificing field position in situations when a lone first down or maybe two ends the game. I like essentially getting two opportunities to get the ball back.

But with that much time remaining and 2 time outs I thought it was a bit of a panic move.

It’s official: 11-0 Back-to-back-to-back Big Sky Champs!
Not bad for a program that had never placed higher than 3rd in the Big Sky up until 2019.

They didn’t play especially well today and made lots of mistakes to allow UCD numerous opportunities to steal their perfect season but somehow got it done.

They say that the mark of a champion is winning when not playing your best. If that’s true, the Hornets passed that test today. Hopefully they play better in 2 weeks when a currently unknown playoff opponent comes to town.

Tremendous to see 23,073 out at Hornet Stadium. Part of me wonders why they didn’t breakout the endzone seats for this game like they did for pro games. They might have been able to fill those too and get up closer to 26,000.

Hopefully the stands will be filled for the playoff game too.

A month ago, Sac St was likely outplayed by Montana, but still found a way to win. Today the Hornets outplayed Davis, struggled to put them away, yet still found a way to win.

great to see the stands filled, but despite the big crowd, its simply not a loud environment. the stands are just too far away from the field. Actually hope Sac St keeps the 2 seed. Love to see them potentially host Montana St and not NDSU in a semi final.

I don’t think the track or the stands being further from the field is the reason. It’s simply a wide open stadium and there’s nothing to focus or trap in the crowd noise,

As for hosting MTST or NDST, I think the Bobcats might actually be the better, more difficult team.

Agreed. It’s very open and big in terms of volume and there are no barriers to contain noise. I also agree though the track and viewing pleasure needs to be improved. Gotta be closer to the field. Great way to fight for the win. It’s a rivalry game so those are also a little tough to predict. Keeping winning hornets!

Oh, don’t get me wrong. Having the track around the field sucks. They need to relocate it to the practice/soccer field to the North West. There’s already a smaller track there. Add some stands and call it a day.

My main point was the track causing more distance between fans and the field isn’t the reason the crowd noise isn’t as loud as it could be.
