The largest school in D1 is Lincoln of Stcokton at 2970. The bottom of D1 by enrollment is Gregori at 2280. The top of D3 by enrollment is Grant at 2088.
Which means that the difference between Lincoln and Gregori (690) is three and a half times as much as the difference between Gregori and Grant (192). Weird stuff, but that's how it lays out.
I should have been a little clearer, the game was against Central of Fresno not Central Catholic.
My point stands. Rocklin struggled to score against a .500 team that didn’t have a defense capable of holding a multitude of teams under 40 or 50 points. That doesn’t look so good.
I’m not trying to throw Turlock under a bus, but rather just being realistic. Rocklin’s offense has been underwhelming to say the least. And Turlock doesn’t have a worldly defense to explain any of that away.
If Turlock held those other good teams to, say, under 28, defending the quality of their team/defense would carry more weight. But truly good teams/defenses don’t surrender the amount of points they did as many times as they did.
Couple that with the fact that Glacier Peak held Rocklin scoreless for 3 quarters and Whitney held them to 10 —- Turlock holding them to 7 is even less impressive. It’s clearly more an indictment against Rocklin’s offensive ability than anything else.
If Turlock had held last years Rocklin offense to 7 points, rather than 41, that’d have been impressive.

If there are enough teams with more enrollment than GHS qualifying for the postseason then I suppose it could happen.
What are the bracket sizes nowadays? 12 total teams with the top 4 seeds getting byes?
If that hasn’t changed then it would take 24 schools with larger enrollments to push the Pacers down to D3.
But even that depends upon what division their league rolls into. Is the Metro a D1 or D2 league?
Again, I don’t know if the previous rules changed or not, but quite recently the rule was that a team could only be pushed down 1 level below whatever the designated division level of their league.
So if the Metro is a D1 league then the lowest level they should be eligible for is D2. If it’s D2 then they could conceivably get pushed to D3 if they don’t win the league title.
They change $#1t so often that I’m not sure what the deal is.

Two of the greatest HS games I’ve witnessed in person, let alone on B2B nights.
Both games were big 2nd half comebacks that were ultimately decided by missed FG’s at the final gun.
The talent and skill on both sides of the ball on all 4 teams was unreal.
St. Mary’s got knocked out the weekend before and arguably had as talented a team as all but GHS.
For most that season the consensus seemed to be that SM and GHS would meet for the title.
I MY OPINION I think Manteca and Oakdale belong in D3 they are both in the D4 enrollment But the not well kept secret that most of the best football players go to Manteca high. It's a 5 school district. Oakdale's advantage is they run their " system " from the time they are 6 or 7. By time they are in high school they know the " system ". Oh yes they have a lot of. wrestlers!
Grant is D3 as of now. The Metro is a D2 league. In order to get bumped into the D2 bracket, Grant will most likely have to win the Metro. D2 is stacked with teams that MUST play there or above. It makes it hard for teams to push up into the D2 bracket.
There are 9 Teams locked into D2:
Whitney
Granite Bay
Vacaville
Jesuit
Manteca
Elk Grove
Tracy
Del Oro
St Marys
Whitney may not qualify due to a lack of 4 wins and St Mary's will move up to D1 by virtue of winning a D1 league.

Grant is in the highest enrollment school in Row 3.
I don't think St. Mary's is slow.
I just don't think they will be able to handle the line play up front.

Many thought the tiny Rams line couldn’t handle Central Catholic’s HUGE line. Might want to check the tape on my friend’s (fellow chain gang) son, #52 Larry Bragg III (center) vs the HUGE Central Catholic nose guard, Roman Foumai (6’2” 380lbs): . I think our line on both sides will do just fine. DLS line will bring more speed than Central Catholic’s line. It will indeed be a different kind and level of defense they will face. But, this kind of pass rush might fit the Rams offense for screen passes and quick passes to the flat. I think we will be fine. More concern will be our DL vs DLS OL and stopping the veer offense (ground game). Really think the much misdirection St Mary’s experienced vs Lodi (and I know it’s Lodi, not DLS) in Lodi’s ground game “might” help the Rams D. No doubt, DLS will find success running the ball vs St. Mary’s. But, if the Rams can make a couple of stops but still move the ball on offense, there is still hope the Rams can pull off the victory. Yes, this is a different level of play the Rams will be facing compared to the teams they have played this year. But, to the coaches and some of the players, this is not St. Mary’s first rodeo in playing DLS. I really feel we will find out if the Rams are indeed overrated or they are not (maybe underrated???). The DLS game will definitely provide a gauge of how good or not so good the Rams are. All I can say is the folks internally feel pretty good about our team. Just gotta not make mistakes and continue to hit hard. Focus and discipline! GO RAMS!!!

The good news is- It is a GREAT measuring stick to see where you stand in NorCal.
Win- right there with Folsom and Serra
Lose by a little- probably close to the top two teams
Get smoked- Not in the conversation

I know your concern is with the Rocklin offense and I understand where you're coming from. Yes, the Turlock defense was not good enough to hold the score down on those games. Over the years Turlock has relied on dominant line play for success with skill players that are reasonably good on a high school level. But when they go up against a team that has equally good or better line play AND has top skill players they usually fall short. Which is what typically happens in the D1 playoffs when they can win the first round games but falter in the second. Which is why they were excited to beat Rocklin in the first game. From your viewpoint Rocklin had lost a lot of players from last year and were missing their best player. Understandable. The casual fan might look at the score and wonder what happened without knowing more of the story. And you still have to face the meat of your league schedule, while Turlock only has one tough game left, against Downey tomorrow, before crushing the rest of the league. And, for what it's worth, Turlock is 11th in the current Maxpreps section rankings, right behind, ironically enough, Rocklin at number 10.
What’s your thoughts on Turlock vs Downey? I have seen Downey play vs Lincoln-Stockton, and I was not impressed with either team, except I did like Downey’s QB and WR’s. Downey has a strong passing game. But, IMO, their defense is not that impressive especially against this year’s Lincoln’s team which IMO is not as strong as prior year’s teams. Lincoln-Stockton recently lost to Tracy and will most likely finish 4th in TCAL league. Lincoln-Stockton plays Lodi this Friday. Lodi IMO should win easily (picking Lodi to finish 2nd in TCAL league behind St. Mary’s). How is Turlock’s secondary? Will they be able to slow down Downey’s passing game? I’m picking Turlock for a very narrow win (thinking shootout), but want to get your take. Thanks!
P.S. Downey did beat Turlock last year 38-14. Downey’s QB had 1 TD via air and 3 TDs on the ground in that game. Might switch to Downey. However, JV game last year was won by Turlock 35-7. Real tossup for my pick’em. Will leave it as Turlock for my 1-pointer.

I was at Downey v Tracy game. The only game Tracy has lost is Downey game. Sure not a tough schedule. I have only seen Downey live. But video of Turlock. I would say Downey by 2 TD?

What has me thinking Turlock will be more of a challenge vs Downey is Turlock’s W vs CVC and their early W vs Rocklin. The 3 losses Turlock has had have been against stronger teams than Downey (or Tracy) have faced in Clovis West, Central, and Manteca. But, I appreciate your input. I do think Downey’s QB Stoddard and their WR corp are very good. Will make a switch on this tossup game to Downey. Thanks! Hope you’re right.

Good atmosphere. The Turlock side is always packed. Over 100 years of football, two teams (1949 and 1957) ranked first in Northern California if not the state. When I was born (1951) the league for the largest schools in the area (Sac-Joaquin Conference) was Turlock, Modesto, Stockton, Lodi, Sacramento, McClatchy, Grant, and Woodland. That league started in 1934 and eventually added Downey, El Camino and Norte Del Rio in the 50's before it split with new schools opening and the southern schools started the Central California Conference.
The 2020 season was switched to the spring of 2021 and Downey moved a lot of sophomores up to the varsity so those sophomores are now seniors with three years experience. Since the CCAL league was formed in 2018 Turlock had not lost a league game until last year. And before that when they were in the CCC they had not lost a league game since 2015. Last year Turlock had some issues with players missing due to COVID as well as injuries to their quarterback and other key players. They might have lost anyway but it didn't help. In the delayed 2020 season the Turlock JV team, who would be seniors now, did not give up a single point the whole shortened season (just 5 league games). Turlock has played a very tough pre-conference schedule, the 2nd toughest in the south part of the section after Central Catholic, so they are battle-tested. I think the key might be if Turlock can put pressure on the Downey quarterback and even get some turnovers. Turlock is a run-first offense and long grinding drives can keep the ball away from Downey, although the Turlock quarterback is a good passer and has receivers that can get open. Hard to make a prediction.
Downey has best defence in a few years, in my opinion. My son is a Downey graduate. So I go to a few games. My girls went to Modesto high so I see a few if their games.

Turlock is very nice and clean. Downtown has excellent eateries, restaurants, bar/breweries. Turlock has close to 80,000 very similar to Folsom. Major farms/food companies encompass the city. 8 Miles south of Modesto on 99. Home to Stanislaus State an emerging University that has been updated. Check it out.
My son went to Stan State. He normally rode bus from Modesto. But Friday I gave him ride.He had one class. So it was Huckleberry's for fried okra. And that sweet shop on Geer rd. Got to go to the sweet shop!
That is what I keep hearing. I rarely go south down the 99 or I5. I need to get down there it seems!
