SJS Match-up: #4 St. Mary's vs #2 Monterey Trail

Kind of sums up 2021 season.

Was checking schedules last night and saw SMS-West and Monterey-Grant. Went back an hour later and the MT-St. Mary's game was added lol.

Should be a really good one

As part of the St. Mary's-Stockton (home games) chain gang, I had my lead contact the St. Mary's athletic department, and the associate athletic director shared that the West game is indeed cancelled, but the Monterey Trail is still not confirmed as of 5 minutes ago. But, all indications is that any future games this season will most likely be on the road.

Also, I was told that Lincoln-Stockton is backing out of the game @ St. Mary's on 4/16. Wow! Giving up a rivalry game and a chance to break the streak. Word is that Lincoln is trying to arrange a game with Edison-Stockton. St. Mary's is also working on find a replacement game for 4/16.

How can they back out of league game? Are they trying to work w/St.Mary's? There has to be more bc I can't see St. Mary's agreeing to that.

Thanks for the update. All I can say is that Monterey Trail thinks the game is on. In this season, though, nothing would surprise me. Look at what happened with Laguna Creek and Elk Grove just last week. It was on, then off, then on again, then off, then hoped for, then really off in a matter of 24 hours.

I heard the Lincoln game cancellation had to do with not having teams available at the different levels to play each other. I find that hard to believe, as well. As far as league games, this season has been a mix of league and non-league games for St. Mary's with 3 out of 4 games for St. Mary's being non-league games, already. So, I'm not sure their league is enforcing league games, at least not with St. Mary's.

Are schools bound by leagues in this season? It seems that it's pretty patchwork at this point. I understand that it's "bad look," but do they HAVE to play each other? Some leagues have pretty much just given up on trying that, at least amongst the leagues for Elk Grove area schools.

Also, note that many teams are struggling to assemble a team roster, with many teams having players play both offense and defense, with not much experience. St. Mary's has several sophomores on their Varsity team. Some are quite small (like 5'6" 150lbs), but they are "fast".

I'm not sure how leagues are really constructed this yr. I don't get how some leagues scheduled games. Must be more to it. Lincoln blasted Tokay and Tracy but not ok with playing St. Mary's? Why play bottom teams if 1 and 2 don't play?

At the end of the day, at least we're playing games now.

Sounds like every day of every year at Monterey Trail. I think that's one of the things that makes this Spring season so valuable. Imagine going almost two calendar years with NO football. A kid could go from playing Freshman ball straight to Varsity with no chance to mentally mature at game speed. Even playing a handful of games in this short season is going to help so many of these players "grow up" while also giving the seniors a chance at some memories.

Only immediate family members, as far as I know.

If I hear different, I will post it, but I doubt it will change by Friday.

You never know, though.
Thanks, I'd love to see this one. Wish Brown was playing

Should be a good game. It is too bad about Prophet Brown, but it is totally expected and understandable. He was a huge factor in that last game for MT, but is sitting out the Spring season in anticipation of Summer workouts at USC. He still works out with the team and is a great kid to have around.

St. Mary's may be even better than they were last year. Their running back (#7) is 16 months bigger, stronger, and faster than he was the last time the two teams met. They have several players who can score when catching the ball in open space and two QB's who can get it to them. Their top tackler (#54) is a stout defender who is hard to move off of his spot. He holds the point of attack really well--stays low and has his head up.

Confirmed with SM athletic department that the game is on and should be streaming on NFHS Network. Still no game scheduled for SM for 4/16, but they are looking for one.

Yes, this game between SM vs MT should be a good one. Big question for SM, can they stop or slow down the the MT running game? They could not do it last year. Could be a shootout??? SM offense is better this year than last year. Really like the new QB, 6’4” Nathan Arnaudo. Also, #2 Jadyn Marshall (now a junior) is back and a speedster to deal with. #18 Jason Calvin is only 5’5” and 134lbs, but he is pretty fast. Yes, #7 Tyrei Washington is back and is a good 15-20 bigger than last year. He is not so easy to bring down.

Should be a good one! GO RAMS!

Why would Lincoln back out of a rivalry game with St Mary's to play another local school? A rivalry should mean so much more, I don't care how many in a row you've lost. Your team should WANT to be the ones that put an end to a losing streak. Damn, I just don't understand that. I must be getting old

I don't understand it either, especially when Lincoln's backfield is getting much notoriety. The 2 teams played a really close game last year @ Lincoln. If not for some unsportsmanlike penalties, Lincoln would have still been in it until the end. Just does not make sense. I am old! LOL

UPDATE!!!!

The Monterey Trail vs. St. Mary's game is off.

I was wondering why I couldn’t find the game on NFHS Network or YouTube. Dang! I was really looking forward to watching it streamed.

Looks like St. Mary’s season is over. No game this week and so far no game for them next week. COVID-19 SUCKS!!!

We couldn't stream the away game because the Freshman and JV were playing still in Elk Grove. Vox Mustangs can't be two places at once and the distance was too far to cover in such a short amount of time.
