USC offers two Bay Area prospects

USC extended offers to San Ramon Valley 2019 LB Tristan Sinclair and Marin Catholic 2020 DL Jamar Sekona to Monday

Scholarships to USC are valued at around $70K per year. I know this because a friend has a son going there not on scholarship.

Paying undergrad sticker these days is rare. Tons of $ handed out at SC.

That’s true at the Public U’s as they use that FAFSA to the T. It’s ridiculous that home equity is considered liquid as if we’re all going to sell to put kids through college!

Since I’ve had two ug privates and one OOS public I’ve negotiated many angles, as well as D1 $. The FAFSA screws you ONLY if considering Calif. publics (and now a public grad school, and 1315.3 deciding on public vs private grad school.) I know a CHS family who sent both theirs to ugrad SC with more than 25k given to each, all four years. Probs good grades, but Dad was well over 100k.

I must have missed the criticism. No one criticized the choice, just discussing how much that offer was worth.
Exactly. These days, if you’re not an athlete, your GPA + test scores gets some of tuition paid no matter where you go. Some prefer the big time name and it’s rep, others prefer the $ assistance. That idea has zero to do with athletes and refer to the poster who says his friend is paying full tuition at USC. That being said, there IS a back end bonus going D1 as a GWO (guaranteed walk on.) If your kid can contribute, many times their 4-5 year package weighs MORE than the NLI’s does.

The beauty of Preferred Walk On is that some of them end up earning scholarship money from on field success and in the case of high academic standards, it helps some guys gain entrance.

In many cases the preferred walk on kids are the high character, overachieving, and high academic players. Not unusual for them to raise the bar. Congrats to the young men who have been offered.

The rate of PWO's being put on scholarship is very low. It does happen, but the vast majority quit football without ever changing their PWO status and before their eligibility expires. Taking a PWO opportunity can be great for certain kids, but those kids should anticipate that they will have the responsibility of a normal player (practice, weights, meetings, etc) without the benefits of scholarship (financial assistance, training table, registration priority, travel, etc). A PWO can only count on being allowed to practice with the team for the first year (after school starts). That is the reality for most PWO's. (No such thing as a GWO).
