Man, what happened to Vallejo Football? Make me want to say a prayer. Used to go to their games when I lived there (but always sat on the side when my beloved Vacaville Bulldogs came to town). I remember Corbus Field. Always intense when they play Hogan. Miss watching their famous color guard band would perform. Games wud always be intense when Vacaville, Napa & Fairfield came there and vice versa. Hopefully they may find their winning ways again. Prayerfully too.....

I thought G61 was a wealthy Folsom resident. Looks like we found out he is not.

A major coaching change was needed three to four decades ago. Too much talent in the "V" to not be a playoff team every year.

The problem with Vallejo is they have to many athletes walking around campus that don't want to put in the work required to be on the team, Vallejo is loaded with talent.

What about the many years when they had a boat load of talent on the team and didn't even reach the playoffs. Is that talent or bad coaching philosophies??? I say pretty bad coaching.

I think it's a combination of all that.. Too many kids that want to be rap stars instead of athletes and once the programs slide it's hard to find any decent coaches. How does Bethel and Vallejo only have 43 kids combined at the Varsity level?

I have no clue on the numbers in regards to roster size but I do know about the bad coaching in the 90's to present. It was time for a new regime neons ago when there were solid coaches in the Vallejo area. There's a lot of credential teachers that are not very good coaches. Vallejo had coaches that were not credential certified but they were bona-fide X's & O's coaches.

Coaching is a problem. Having athletes and having eligible athletes are 2 different things. American Canyon has taken some of the players away as has Bethel. Also some parents are hitting the private school route now. With the school district leadership nothing will change anytime soon. Sad because there are some passionate coaches in the area that kids would but into but they have the wrong last name.

Lots of things start at home, but same could be said about Grant - they find a way. Recall the days of Hogan and Vallejo loaded with talent and very competitive. Things change - also remember Folsom not being very good. :)

Del Paso Heights and that Natomas area of Sacramento is a far cry from Vallejo. Those areas have made strong economic improvements over the past 10 years. Vallejo has very little going for it these days. Sad state of affairs. City was BK awhile back and place has been in decline since the days of Mare Island etc. I remember playing the Apaches back in the day and they were always tough in hoops and football. Always had a couple big D1 players. If you are anybody these days you are going to find another school to go to. (St Pats, American Canyon, etc). Wasn't Jabari Bird from Vallejo? Did he commute to Salesian?

I don't know where Jabari lived, but he played his freshman year at Benicia HS before transferrring to Salesian.

Larry this goes back to Atlanta Falcons Pro Bowler and Cal Bears Safety Thomas Decoud. Thomas grew up in Vallejo and Played Pop Warner in Vallejo before he ended up playing HS football for Pinole Valley. There are numerous of Vallejo youth football players that decided to take their talents out of Vallejo when they reached high school. Many of these Vallejo kids end up playing in Benicia, Fairfield and Suisun to play for Rodriquez. It's sad but that's the reality when you have a coach that doesn't grasp the changes of the game to keep up with the elite coaches.

Jahvid Best, Freddy Tagaloa, Jabari Bird, Dominic Artis, Desmond Simmons all commuted from Vallejo to Salesian

Great reference - Jahvid Best & Freddy Tagaloa - two of V-Town's finest - imagine Vallejo with those dudes. Larry Legend says it best: "If you are anybody these days you are going to find another school to go to" -- and with open enrollment in a lot of areas, that's what happens all over......self-fulfilling prophecy.
