Don’t know how long you have been in California but the way the CIF has changed things since the open is very suspect in my opinion.
Back in the late 80’s and 90’s you could petition to play up. Hence why a school of 300 kids aka Jason Kidd played D1. A few other schools did as well.
This last week I added up the combined losses of D1 thru 5 boys and girls that played for state titles It was over 200.
In the late 90’s they then went to enrollment period. And in most cases the division 1 games were so so and the D2-D4 and even a few D5 games were dynamite. Their was a team called Price from So Cal that would compete with this Riordan and Roosevelt team and would have easily beat every other boys team in all the other divisions.
What enrollment did was bring the best teams to the board? Klay Thompson played division 3. Tyson Chandler and Tyshaun Prince D2. Jrue Holiday D4 and every so often you would get guys like James Harden in D1. Year after year you literally got to watch the best of the best play.
But then came the open division. In reality should be called the private school killer. It took a majority of the privates and put them all open. Rosevelt of course is an exception and every so often may have that. But at the end of the day outside of the open division, all the rest of the better high schools are sitting at home.
And being SO Cal has been known to be loaded with talent, it doesn’t surprise me at all that after kicking SO Cal ass that the score was what it was last night against Nor Cal.
To me the CIF should go back to enrollment so the fans can witness the best teams play each and every year.
