WCAL 2016 Basketball: SHC over SI in O/T & other scores

How so Irish? So far the basket ball season is starting to look as unpredictable as the football season was week to week this past season.
Most fans have had limited viewings of most if not all the WCAL teams, so let's see what we do know about the games so far & if those MaxPreps rankings are way off or not for WCAL & CCS.

#2 - ST. Francis 5-1 with only loss to a highly ranked Sacramento team who is 11-0 and currently #2 in the state. Among its 5 wins is a win over a very good Palma team who plays HMB upcoming.

#3 Bell's 6-1 have played a decent schedule with only loss to #1 team in CCS HMB while handing a good MA team their only loss so far.

#6 Serra 4-2 with losses coming to DLS & a tough Burlingame squad. Serra had several blow-out wins over weak comptetiton, but took down University of SF by 12 who had previously squeaked by Riordan.

#10 Mitty 3-4 has a deceptive record to say the least & by far & away the toughest schedule to date of any WCAL team. Mitty has the top win of any WCAL team against highly rated St. Augustine of SoCal and it seems all its other opponents were not too shabby either. Look up the teams and the 3-4 is actually quite impressive.

#12 St. Ignatius 6-2 has a loss to highly rated entennial Catholic & a narrow low to HMB.

#20 SHC 4-4 is tough at this point to evaluate clearly, SHC has had a solid schedule with some good teams of which the Irish have lost to all 4 of them.

#24 VC 6-1 has had perhaps the weakest schedule of any WCAL team and not played any team ranked high in state or CCS. VC's biggest win was a blow-out of Fremont/Sunnyvale which played a close game against a very good Burlingame squad.

#26 Riordan 3-3 is another tough to judge just yet with losses to some good teams and best game is a win over St. Mary's Berkeley. Tonite RIordan faces a big challenge vs Monte Vista [Danville] which will shed further light on how talented the Crusader's are for this season.

Just that it's so early. (Unless that's too much of an excuse for Fool-bo...).

As noted in the scoring post this was a good quality win for the Crusader's over a good team with a winning record. Looking at MV's win's a number of them were tight games with a 1-2 point differential. Its a good sign to see Riordan pull out a close game over a tough opponent like MV as that is what the WCAL league games will be like week to week.

That is a strong win for the Crusaders.
Serra also beat a good Heritage team last night by 12 in the Marin Catholic tournament. Play a very good team from LA tonight.

St. Francis and SHC are the main teams to watch in WCAL. Lots of talented players and solid coaches. I love watching them play.

Actually looking at teams schedules/records I would say SF/Mitty will be the 2 teams to watch.

James Logan ran all over SI yesterday. Game never in doubt. 22-12 after one and SI just doesn't have that much. Matt Redmond played well for SI, but this is not a strong team.

Superb performance by SI vs Mission
Will Avery dominant
Matt Redmond should be starting. By the time he's a senior, watch out
Darrion Trammell started and is a pure point guard.
Rob Marcoletti made adjustments after the poor performance the day before and things really clicked

This may sound like heresy, but, so far, does it look like Serra might be better with Jack Wilson coming off the bench? It's a very tough call. But, since the Burlingame debacle, Serra seems to have turned things around a bit without Wilson being a key cog. It's not clear at this point, though.

Wilson did not play at the Marin Catholic tournament but he played last night vs SHP, scoring 9.

Yuu could be right colhenry, I saw the highlights & stats of the Serra-University game & Wilson did not appear to play in that game and Serra played very well and collected a big win. Am sure Rapp is trying different combinations & quite possibly coming off the bench fits the underclassman better at this stage in his development, we'll see.

I have not seen the youngster Wilson play . But , for the most part, the WCAL Sr. bigs (Kone & Hewitt) are pretty mobile and strong-so probably not the best matchup. Rest of WCAL except for SI play "small ball" employing even 4 guard offenses. If Wilson is mobile and moves well, he can make a difference. Also Serra's scheme is tight man D and uptempo motion offense. How much will Rapp change his schemes for the kid?

i think the padres could be in for a tough year....... wilson was taped up from wrist to mid forearm... must have fallen on it during practice lol

I agree on Wilson being better off the bench. He doesn't fit great in Serra's system now. His best role is as a specialist to come in for quick interior offense or to throw at bigs like Kone or Hewitt.

Better yet, maybe he does not fit into Serra's "system" and would be a better fit with the Dr. or since he's waving light sabers as Obi Won in the PAL. I'm sure they would welcome him back from a galaxy far far away ;) Or maybe Yoda has room at M-A, I'm sure he'd like someone anchoring the middle with their scrambling defense. o_O

Based on what I've seen so far this year and what each team has returning from last season:

Tier 1
1. St. Francis - Lots of talent and returning experience.

Tier 2
2. Mitty - Tough non-league schedule should have them primed for WCAL play. Loss of Sebastian Much hurts their ceiling.
3. Serra - Losses to Burlingame and De La Salle. The Padres will be top 3 in league again. In Rapp we trust.

Tier 3
4. Sacred Heart Cathedral
5. Riordan
6. Bellarmine
7. St. Ignatius

More of the same for these 4 teams in Tier 3. Same coaches, same styles, same talent levels, same results. Although SI is young and poised for an upswing.

Tier 4
8. Valley Christian - In the 9 previous seasons the program's league record stands at 8-118. They have currently lost 26 WCAL games in a row.

I'm going out on a limb and say Valley ends the streak this year...just like the Irish will in Football next season

Before you dismiss Valley, have you seen them play? I have and don't believe they'll go winless in WCAL.

No I have not seen VC play yet but I haven't heard a reason why they won't be in the cellar again this season. I did not say they will go winless. Just that they have a 6% winning percentage the past 9 years. How many games do you think they will win and what place they will come in? I hope the program makes a jump this year but we shall see.

I did say Valley would end the streak this year and not go winless. All streaks end at some point. ;)

A buzzer-beater beat Bellarmine and SHC overcame a deficit to briefly take a lead vs. Mitty. Riordan came back from a double-digit deficit but couldn't overcome the Lancers.[/QUOT

Based on the close scores last night (with the exception of the Serra-VC game) it looks to be a competitive league race to the title. SI made a nice statement with their DOT win over the Bells. I understand the Lancers bolted to a 20-3 lead against the Crusaders, but had to hold on for the win. 1DNA or J2 - were you guys at the game? Out this week enjoying the slopes!

saw the first half after watching SF JV's win in OT Thought it would be a blowout after a 20-5 first quarter. SF can just j flat ump, run and play AAU ball. Was disappointed in Riotdans student showing.. Opening night of WCAL with updated gym against league powerhouse.... but the band is impressive

I attended this game and I must say the Forum looks great. Very cool new scoreboards and the baskets were also upgraded...very nice touch.

This looked like it was going to be a blowout early on as St. Francis started the game with a Hewitt monster dunk and I believe they were up 20-5. Riordan methodically got back into the game as Galindo nailed some bombs to get Riordan back into the game. St. Francis is just a good team and are very big at all positions. The Riordan zone slowed them down a bit as Riordan settled into a good defensive rhythm. Benedetti, Stapes, Thomas and Adzich played outstanding for the Lancers.

Riordan received contributions form several players as the sophomore Chun made some nice shots, he will be a player. But this is a senior led team and Smith, Norman, Galindo and Stansberry brought them back to within 2 with 3 minutes left. Galindo nailed a huge 3 to bring them to within 2 but the experienced Lancers did not panic as Riordan had all the momentum. A few costly turnovers by Riordan allowed the Lancers to put the game away.

St. Francis is the class of the league, keep in mind their PG Witt was in street clothes. Their achilles heel may be shot selection as they were throwing up some, IMO, ill advised shots. But credit the Riordan D for some of those as well. Benedetti, Stapes and Hewitt are great players and Witt may be better than all of them. This is a complete team.

Riordan will be competitive primarily because of their defense. Stansberry had a subpar game for him but the fact that the Crusaders were able to compete without a monster game from Stansberry must be very encouraging to Buckner, who did another great job coaching. Galindo kept Riordan in the game with some big shots and they had nice contributions from all their starters but not much depth. Riordan is not very big but they are scrappy.

Overall it was a well coached and well played WCAL game. Looking forward to a great season.

Sounds like Alfred Hollins was in foul trouble in the second half. Back and forth game between Mitty and SHC.

Biggest surprise was SI beating Bellarmine.

Streak, agreed, great win by the Cats!

Irish hanging with Mitty and Crusaders with the Lancers bodes well for a competitive league......I still believe SF and Mitty are 1-2 and the Padres have the ability to beat anyone with Rapp at the helm.

SHC is also extremely young...only one senior on the team...They need better point guard play or a BIG to play better.

I haven't gotten to see Serra yet, but Wilson could be effective hitting the boards. Nice big, wide body to block out with
