WCAL Football 2018 - San Jose Merc All Bay Area Team

ding ding ding! child populations severely declining in the city and moving to the subs. Millennials dont want kids, LGBT don't have kids, and the ones that do have kids dont have them playing sports.

Good observation geary & right on the money! I am in real estate & recently held a number of "open houses" for a new listing in Burlingame. I can't tell you how many couples/young families came through from SF looking to move out of the city. They are all looking for the same things: safe, clean neighborhoods within walking distance to highly rated schools, public or private [Burlingame has numerous highly rated schools both ways to choose from].

For all of you history buffs out there in the anonymous ether, it's worth noting that the Archdiocese of San Francisco was fully prepared to build and open a Catholic high school in South San Francisco early in the 1960s during the great post-World War II population boom on the Peninsula. But those plans fell apart and never happened. If memory serves, it was to be dubbed "Bishop Alemany."

DLS vs Folsom tonite in long awaited showdown

WCAL first games next week but will be checking in on Folsom-DLS since being streamed this evening.
Supposed one of the best Folsom teams & the DLS fans are saying this is a much improved Spartan team over last year with a dual threat QB. Whle Freeman's has Folsom as a very slight favorite the vast majority of fans think DLS will come out on top & a number think the Spartans are going to roll Folsom.
It will be interesting to see how rankings are affected either way and how SF, Serra & VC will be affected if at all. Either way St. Francis has a date with DLS on Sept. 7th and will be a good gauge how the WCAL top teams stack up against DLS & Folsom. Last year DLS defeated St. Francis 35-7 in a lackluster offensive game for the Lancer's. 3 year's ago the Bell's shocked Folsom on their home field ending their multi-year win streak at the time. Tonite's game against the 2 NorCal powers will be interesting.

Final DLS 14-0 over Folsom was a slow back & forth game dominated by defense rather than an offensive shoot-out.
Folsom turned ball over numerous times & went on 4th & 6 from their own 40 - turning ball over & resulting in 1 DLS TD (poor coaching by Folsom).

So what to expect when St Francis plays DLS in a few weeks? SF should also have a good defense & may be able to contain this DLS offense to some degree. The bigger issue will
be SF's offense as a slow grind it out ground game will not work vs DLS (likely would result in similar 35-7 loss like last season).
SF will have to have some semblance of a passing game to have any shot in the game.
The Lancers do have 2 very good WR's & they'll need them as Spartan's secondary looked very tough vs Folsom.

Is Page available for the Lancers? Did he leave? Did he stay?

No confirmation colhenry other than the one post that said he was "working out with the Menlo Atherton team & maybe enrolling there". Not sure if a rumor or just chatter & then question of eligibility [?]

Stop the three Urban school excuse.

There is only one city school in trouble and LGBT have kids.
SI has been fully staff and Riordan makes it work

Let's talk about the "Kings of Kezar"

SF Cityfan, all you do is talk crap about SHC and even with our deficiencies we manage to beat you guys the majority of the time in the last decade. So stop and go lie in your fetal position in front of Phelan Ave, don't forget to bring FUBO.

Also, SHC got a transfer from St. Ignatius this year, I believe he is a junior QB but he has to sit out due to CCS rules, but based on all you ever talk about, Rearend gets all the transfers because they will be so dominant. I don't know anything about the QB but Im sure he is a better option than the Sophomores currently on the roster.

I don't root against Riordan in anything except against SHC, so just pay attention to your own school and be thankful Riordan is still open in San Francisco.

The "Kings of Kezar" certainly were the kings in football last year in SF. Unless you are talking about your soccer team which was and is the king of no team. Just worry about your own school and stop bashing SHC. Every school has its problems and you seem to forget that.

OK so the initial post about only one SF school "being in trouble" was apparently referring to SHC & not sure why other than maybe the lack of direct football facilites. An earlier post today on a different thread about the S.I. & Palma scrimmage said S.I.'s roster had "about 30 players" [def NOT good if that's the case].
Now another poster saying Riordan is in deep again this season[??].

So if I understand all 3 posts correctly we are right back at square one - ie: all 3 SF schools are struggling in the sport of football due to lack of roster numbers..

Rmbr,

I am challenging the concept of all three school in trouble?

1. The city has more of a two hold professional family base, that includes LGBT for the #MAGA group. They haven't moved. They look at the science and want to have little Johnny to at other options. OTHER words , no soccer mom driving the Taheo.

2. The raising of 2M, and commitment of a field 2020, let's me know that Crusade for Brotherhood is strong in the city. Especially after redoing their gym, which before was the best gym in city and now leaves everyone else behind.

So that leave the ONE school that cat field three teams. If anyone ones remembers, the codition of the WCAL In returning to League Play, was if you didn't field a Varsity team in FB all programs would be out. The benefit of the Mass Exodus of this Program is Riordan.

Letd's just keep it real....SIvshould be included in the BS and at Program investing 2Million shouldn't be either.

So name the color of failure and it is Green & White.

Drop the Mic...on this subject

Based on last yr all 3 levels had losing records with the frosh going 3-5-1, jv going 3-7 (forfeit win to SH) and vars going 2-8 and also many of the starters from the varsity have graduated, as well as many of the current seniors that were supposed to step up either quit or transferred

Not much of senior leadership which in my opinion can help the lower levels transition to the varsity level as well as many of the jv starters from last yr transferring out too

Reported he enrolled at Menlo Atherton but FB coach stated not working out with team. He might not be getting a release from St Francis to play if true he transferred t the school or just decided not to play.

Sorry about that... I saw Mitty travels to Oakdale SF. Probably meant Mitty vs Oakdale @ St Francis in Honor Bowl. 12:00 noon kickoff :)

St Francis will have a tough time scoring on DLS. DLS offense should have success against the Lancers. That Folsom defense was the real thing. Very talented and disciplined.

Yes DLS "D' looked like the real deal NorCal. I do think SF will be a bit more disciplined than Folsom in terms of turning ball over and going for it on 4th & 6 on their own 40 early in 3rd quarter in a close game [just repeating what I already said as I thought DLS out-coached Folsom].

SF I think will be OK in this game if they play error-free and can grind out some 1rst downs with run game and complete a few first down passes to their talented WR's. I wasn't impressed with the DLS pass game so SF can concentrate on closing down the Spartan run game incl the QB. After what happened to Pitt just who knows how good either DLS or Folsom is until 1-2 games more. The "explosive" Folsom offense that their fans said would put up 40+ on DLS couldn't cross the goal line once? This season is starting out real interesting..

Cali, you seem to obsess with the Riordan players who transferred out. How much do you know of the players that have transferred in this season? Addition by subtraction was mentioned re this season's transfer activity... Let's wait and see how this plays out.

I was at the game and this DLS defense looked as good as any I have seen since the late late 90's. Not sure SF will even score. Not going to pound it in on this team. Tha DLS QB looks like he is going to be pretty good. Nice pass once he got sometime. SF may make it tough on the veer but it was also DLS first game and by the time they face the Lancers it will be their 4th. Lancers have a potentially tough one next week and probably an easy one against Oak Grove. I would have given St Francis a shot at scoring with Page, but looking more like a repeat of last season. DLS offense will be better than last season as far as balance and they put up 37 on Lancers. I don't think St Francis would stay with Folsom this season - even with what looks to be a very good defense. Just my opinion. Losing Page is a huge hit on St Francis offense. They will have a decent RB but not at his level as far as a game breaker and St Francis isn't going to get much passing success on those Spartan corners. Spartans should completely shut Lancer's offense down. I would give Serra a better shot at scoring this year.

JVs struggled last year with a small roster and key players hit by injury. If you look at the Frosh record, they were competitive throughout the season with the exception of a few losses. A big improvement over the past few season's frosh results as they were boat raced in most of their games. I understand the Crusader frosh had a good turnout this week. We shall see.

Fair enough do you know if josh miles is playing this yr?? Plays physical and may play rb if still playing

Dear Santa,

I want to get on your good side this year snd give you a heads up on potential "Coal Canidates"

The reason for my request is they post in formation that they just don't know anything about. The quote numbers, but don't answer the 2million dollar question that would get a "Buzz" on Steve Harvy show.

Let just plan on "Coal", but only after the concede to the "Kings of Kezar"

Not sure. He does not appear in the "preseason" Maxpreps roster, though it appears some new names appear (incl a SF rival school) He did sustain a horrific knee injury last year - hope nothing but the best for this young man.

Josh miles is not playing this year at Riordan period. He didn’t play much last year so I’m not sure if you can miss a player who didn’t play. The seniors this year are team leaders, you don’t know what you are talking about if you say otherwise. Riordan will beat SH & SI this year for sure.
Riordan has least 35-40 players once transfers and all players are healthy.

I watched them play last night and the QB looked good. Wideouts are running game looked good. Defense needs to improve but they are young on defense with a few returning players on that side of the ball. They will score, but defense must improve.

SF has a more talented defense than Folsom, plus it's a home game for them. Granted this will be the 3rd or 4th game for DLS, I expect the Lancers to keep score low to moderate versus Sparta. The Lancer lines this year a legit, so I expect them to provide time for QB to pass, but without Page, not a real threat on the ground. DLS 21 SF 7

Really hope that the unverified comments under the article are not true. I d

I wouldn't say more talented. Several of the D1 players play both ways. They didn't seem to shut down Sparta last season either. Folsom was surprisingly good. I have seen St Francis more and yes will be stout but they won't score on DLS unil the end of the game unless there is some turnover. SF lost their best D-lineman from last season, They will be good, but will be offensively challenged against Sparta. Away to go before game but I think we're talking 35-7 or 42 -7. SF won't have very good field position all game and DLS already was taking out the kinks in its offense in the second half against Folsom. Folsom is at another level than SF.

WCAL Football 2018: Season Opener's Upcoming

Bellarmine hosts Menlo-Atherton Fri. nite 7:00PM SJCC

Game Preview:

This first game will tell a lot about the Bell's & what to expect this season. With many teams it is difficult to tell how they will play out the season from the first game, such as Serra losing badly in its first game of the season both in 2016 & 2017 to go on to state bowl games both years'. That is not at all the case with this years' Bellarmine team. The Bell's are coming off 2 disappointing season's finishing 2017 at 4-7 with a number of lopsided losses. In reviewing all the data on the Bell's I cannot predict the Bell's will win this game. I've read the posts about the Bell's coaching and the teams execution on plays and team defense, however I'm not convinced by any of those comments as in the past.
The Bell's were lacking in skill player talent last season and any semblance of a passing game. They did not have one of the larger rosters and lost 3 solid pieces on defense as well their primary RB as well.. The Bell's JV team went 5-3 and this year's varsity will be counting heavily on players from the 2017 Bell's JV. This did happen a few years' back when the Bell's were in a total "reload" year and came back to win the WCAL with a roster full of soph's & junior's. This season that same occurrence is a real long shot IMO.

M-A went 8-5 in 2017 and lost their season opener by 21-16 to the Bell's which M-A will want to reverse this season.
Ending last season the Bell's lost in the first round of the playoffs to Milpitas by 35-7 and was never really in the game.
The following week Milpitas defeated M-A by 33-20 in a game that was at least competitive to some extent. Some might say "apples to oranges" but I think that last game by each team tells me something. M-A has a bit more talent coming back from last season & M-A's JV team went undefeated last season at 10-0 [it gets worse].
The M-A JV team defeated the Bell's JV team last season by 42-0. So yes I think the Bell's will have their hands full come Friday evening.

Conclusion: Bellarmine needs a solid win in the worst way in this game. A poor showing or loss by several scores to M-A and the Bell's fans will see the writing on the wall. It's an important game as well for the Bell's coaching staff who desperately need to turn this team around.

Prediction: M-A 20-14 over Bell's

I think MA could be in the top 3 -5 teams in CCS this year.

My Menlo Atherton Overview

Menlo-Atherton is stacked again with lots of talent (6 players with college offers, 4 D1 and more to come by season end). Even with the loss of QB Miles Conrad, and three top linemen, the bears will have among the most talent of any team in the CCS in both speed and a big physicality. Biggest replacement will be QB position with Jack Alexander, Jr, 5-10, 165, expected to take over the helm of the offense. Alexander while not the prototype QB is mobile and an accurate passer that sees the field well and throws well to spots most anywhere on the field with short windows. Not a strong armed QB but he will be able to get it downfield to his tall and athletic WRs. Bears have an opportunity to improve at the QB position over last season and reason the are believed to improve over last season including major talent on both sides of the ball. They will be a physical smashmouth team on both sides of the ball with pretty good playmakers (including Soph WR Troy Franklin who already has offers and will be a National recruit). They are expected to win the PAL Bay and go far in the playoffs if they perform as expected.

KEY PLAYERS:

  • Noa Ngalu, Sr, 6-2, 285 DT/G/RB, committed to WA;
  • Daniel Heimuli, Sr, ILB, 6-2,220, 4 star LB with 23+ offers including Alabama;
  • Troy Franklin, Soph, WR/CB, 6-3, 170, super athletic with offers already from Oregon State, Arizona State, Hawaii, Utah, San Jose State and will be one of the highest recruited skill players to come out of CCS by the time he is a senior.
  • Justin Anderson, Jr, 6-0, 170, CB/WR, 3 star recruit with offers from Iowa State, Washington State and Utah;
Others to watch (from film I viewed):
  • De’Marshaun Payton, Sr, RB, 5-8, 160, 879 yards rushing 10 TDs;
  • Moala Tautuaa, Sr, DT/C, 6-2, 315;
  • Tyreke Jackson, Jr, 5-7, 155, RB/SS, shifty and quick runner;
  • Atonio Tau, Jr, LB/RB, 5-10, 220, load on both sides of ball;
  • Uate Uhila, Jr, G, 6-1, 260, physical lineman;
  • Malik Johnson, Sr, SS, 6-1, 205, transferred from St Francis;
  • Ben Tuipulotu, Sr, FS/WR, 6-0, 175, transfer from Kings Academy that is very good on both sides of the ball;
  • David Tafuna, Sr, DE/C/G, 6-1, 265, very good on defense, quick and physical;
  • Jack Alexander, Jr, QB, 5-10, 165, accurate passer and relatively mobile. Not big arm but throws to spots well especially slants and post. He is impressive as far as getting the ball in small windows and he is also mobile.
Results versus Bellarmine: Last season: Varsity lost last season 21-16 and Menlo Atherton JV won 42-0 against Bellarmine

Conclusion: Defense: Menlo Atherton defense looks like it is going to be very strong and stout. Not sure Bells will have much success on ground. Not sure transfers from St Francis and Kings academy will have to sit out or play, but both are strong DBs, but line and LBs will be very strong. DBs will be strong as well even without the transfers. Lots of depth on this team. Defense could be special next season. Offense will have some big play makers, including D1 recruits WRs Franklin and Anderson, and Tuipulotu and RB Payton. Tau is a load as a RB and they also use 280 lbs Ngalu at RB on short yardage. QB will be able to get the ball to very dangerous receivers and is mobile and they can pound the ball in smash mouth style on the ground. Menlo Atherton has potential to really have a strong season and could be one of their most talented teams ever. Bells will be the underdog in this game.

Aragon should provide M-A with a severe challenge in the PAL-Bay. M-A is not the clear title favorite in that league.

WCAL Football 2018: Season Opener's Upcoming

Valley Christian travels to Wilcox [Santa Clara] Fri. nite 7:00PM

Game Preview:

Not a highly anticipated contest after several lopsided wins by VC in recent year's including last season' s 48-7 mauling of the Wilcox Charger's by the VC Warrior's. On the positive side this game may be a bit more competitive than recent past games between these 2 teams. This is not to say that Wilcox is capable of an upset as that would be going too far [not impossible, but highly unlikely]. The reason for the comment is that Wilcox is returning 16 starters from last season's 7-4 team including their top RB and 2 best WR's. So Wilcox should be "at least" as good as 2017 and the Wilcox JV team went 9-0 last season to provide some additional talent for this season.

VC has a number of good players returning, but will start a new QB and new featured RB as well. VC's JV went 5-2 and their frosh were undefeated going 7-0 so could see quite a few new faces on this varsity squad. My biggest interest will be if if VC uses running QB directing an almost exclusive run game. Last season VC passed among the least of the WCAL teams along with Bellarmine. The VC offense is one-dimensional in relying on their rushing game and passed only a few times per game in 2017. Against teams like Wilcox with VC's physical lines it may prove effective until VC plays the better teams of the WCAL. I'll be curious as to how long Wilcox can hang around with VC in this game.

Conclusion: Will we see a "new-look" offense by the Warrior's or their traditional physical run game using several speedy RB's? If using a more wide-open offense with a new QB this game would be the time to test it out & air it out if ahead by a few scores. I expect Wilcox to score on VC and more than once.

Prediction: VC 28-14 over Wilcox

Aragon should provide M-A with a severe challenge in the PAL-Bay. M-A is not the clear title favorite in that league.
Aragon should be pretty good but probably no better than last season. They have a few really strong players returning on offense and defense and line should have some size. They must reload at QB looks like able passer taking helm. Always well coached. Just believe MA returners including transfers is going to have too much and Aragon. Should be a good game against Aptos this season, but got to favor Menlo Atherton

This is pretty much what we all said in 2017, that M-A was so loaded with individual talent that it would roll the league. Not even close. With even more big-time players on their roster, the Bears finished third in the PAL Bay out of six schools last year.

To put it in perspective "Little HMB" with a roster under 30 beat both teams [Aragon & M-A] in 2017 & both Aragon
& M-A were bigger physically than HMB. The HMB Cougars won over Aragon by 21-14 in a close game and won over M-A by 28-10 in a not so close game. In the head-to-head game Aragon edged out M-A by 21-18.

On paper I had both Aragon & M-A winning over HMB.

So the bigger question is with all HMB's top players graduating where does that leave HMB in relation to Aragon
& M-A? I'm not sure there is any clear favorite in the PAL Bay as of yet..

WCAL Football 2018: Season Opener's Upcoming

St. Ignatius travels to Palo Alto Fri. nite 7:00 PM

Game Preview:
Like Bellarmine this game is an absolute "must win" for the S.I. Wildcats. After several "down years" the fans [myself included] are hoping for some kind, any kind of turn-around by this S.I. team. S.I. last season had only 3 wins and for 2018 this game needs to be a solid #1 win. With returning players from last season and the JV team newcomers S.I. does not look to have any "star" players on its roster and will be more of a "possession" team rather than an explosive high scoring team of offense or "shut-down" team on defense. S.I. should have a decent run game and capable of completing short passing routes to mix it up. Team speed is lacking so play execution will be crucial.

"Paly" was 3-8 in 2017 and it does not appear too much has changed for 2018. Last season's JV team for the PA Vikings was 7-2-1 and they beat Mitty's JV by 13-0, so not too bad.

Conclusion: 2 teams both looking to improve on last season's losing records. S.I. needs to establish offense early and get points on the board while limiting any big plays by Paly. If S.I. plays possession ball and limits mistakes/penalties they should be in control of this game & if not then it's a long season ahead for the Wildcats.

Prediction: S.I. 21-7 over Palo Alto
