As I said and I confirmed with the doctor. The 2002 state team never used a 1-3-1 zone anytime during the season. But state title week told the kids we may not use this but we are going to work on it and you need to pay attention. And in the final playing two future pros, two other D1 players and an interior center going to Oregon for football, he inserted it and those guys were like what the hell. Got to throw it all out there.

This Roosevelt team would have torched the Crusaders (or any team) if they went zone. Roosevelt rolled through the SoCal brackets against the likes of Harvard-Westlake, Sierra Canyon, Bosco and Notre Dame. They came to Sacramento battle tested and having one of the top CA basketball players. As I mentioned in another post, I don't think any HS team would beaten Roosevelt last night. Hats off to the Mustangs.
Btw - great seeing the Doctor at Golden 1 last night supporting his alma mater, former players (coaches Curtin and Tofi) and coaches.

Agree. Burries averaged 30+ during their SoCal playoff run against all those loaded teams - very impressive. This was Burries (and Roosevelt's) night.
Does anyone connected to the Riordan program know how Hillman is doing after that really bad spill last night? I hope any injuries aren't serious. I really love the way the young kid plays basketball and handles himself out there and hope for a quick recovery.
And some of us also know the story of of 2007 and 2008 girls putting national champion trophies in our trophy case. And add another in 2016 as well and an overall state title record of 5-4.
And on the boys end we also know the story of 2009 hanging banner and losing twice in 2012 and 2013.
Oh and let’s not forget all the other boys teams in the WCAL and state.

So for those of us that are WCAL all the way and I have talked to a few today, if you think none of those other teams with banners couldn’t have beat Rosevelt that’s hilarious. Do you have a clue who St Francis beat. And who Serra lost to.
Anyways every school can do what they want. The WCAL has a major issue right now. It’s no longer competitive. Riordan beat every team by 25. What would Rossevelt and Notre Dame and others do. So hopefully the league can come up with some solutions so schools can find ways to get back and win. Cause right now it’s no different than McAteer running thru the AAA then getting smashed by Riordan in the 2001 nor cal final.
Give Coach Curtin a lot of credit. It takes alot to coach a major roster of talent. And unlike Mater Dei who rolled the balls out for years, he is passionate and works at the craft. There was another WCAL coach who rolled the balls out. How did that work out. At least guys like Forslund and Filios and Rapp and I believe Curtin is adapting to is we have to win in the last week. I think the future is bright, but don’t get it twisted, plenty of average and talented WCAL rosters beat teams that has a few guys make millions playing the game. Take care

I'd like to see the CCS expand the amount of total in-season games from 24 to 28. Puts WCAL schools at a disadvantage as they already have 14 games accounted for. This leaves basically 3 pre-season tournaments and one non-league where many teams from the other Sections and SoCal already have up to 20+ games under their belt before even league-play.

If I am Riordan this is my take. And I was curious as how Rossevelt played 37 games to Riordans 31. If that’s because of CCS rules someone needs to wake up.
On that note I would drop the crusader classic for now. Line up a Hoop Hall or equal tourney so you play the top of the nation. Play at Gridley as that covers the bay areas best pretty much. And then find a solid two nationally ranked teams, one road and one at home and hell those games can be during league.
Rossevelt played Gonzaga on January 20th and they won their state. And traveled to
bishop Gorman on January 25th.
I think the north is at a disadvantage for sure. But if they are gonna continue to go hard after unreal talent then getting a tad more creative in scheduling can go along ways. Versus playing Miramonte and Sacred Heart Prep.
In my opinion they are on a national stage now. And to continue to elevate on that stage schedule wins or loss can go along ways.
All that said...need to diversify there defensive concepts....half court efficiency...ran into an opponent they could not out man...out run...know this Burries a junior...a likelihood Roosevelt will be back in open Finals
Also need to head to the projects and get you a couple players. Ain't no way a kid giving me 40 without catching bout 3 hard fouls. Need some NYC type point guards as coach Lappas would say

One off season trend that I feel is very good for HS teams are the events like Section 7 in AZ and CaliLive. This allows actual HS teams to compete against teams from all over the State and incl teams from AZ and NV, etc. Uni's Coach Randall did an excellent job last summer running the CaliLive in Roseville. Teams are placed in divisions closely matched to their level of play. Enhances HS teams and the AAU season is still able to do its thing (like it or not).

With all due respect his assitant is unreal from what I have seen over the years. There are state title games MD has no excuses to lose. And what about development wise. Who over all these years between Arco and Golden 1 has been a NBA stud. Most of their best players in every state year never made it stick on an nba bench and he has had talent.
Stanley first 4 title kid 8 years in the league but trust me I know his mom passing was a huge factor in his career.
Travis Wear a year in the league and his brother a 10 day contract.
DJ Strawberry, Karen Reignhold who was a stud. I don’t see the after MD success like the football team has produced
A lot of good information, but no ones thought to double the kid and him a passer. someone else on the team would have had to beat me. He only score 80 plus points in the last two games. There was ZERO adjustments made on him.
Again I don’t know how you adjust to him by double or triple teaming him. Gilbert Arenas was asked why didn’t you send your son to one of the power schools. He said cause I want him to learn to break double and triple teams and he did all season. And got to a state game as well.
So maybe zone and flip from a 2-3 to 2-2-1 to a 1-3-1. But to hold a coach responsible for let’s double and triple team, that’s tough. He can easily get out of all of that. They are ranked 2 in the country on the real high school list. It’s not just because of Brayden alone. He has some damn good teammates that have to be guarded as well.

You only turn the crowd unless you show them he is human. There was no other way. He’s that good and as a preparation staff. You already know this. We’re talking about a legendary player. Make it simple - No other way. Bring out the bench and wear him down. We will be in the bonus within the first four minutes of every quarter. He will hit his free throws. But we will attack with every single dog that we have. No other way he’s that good. You must be very humble and realistic. To come in with this mindset. It’s actually next level.

Coaching high school basketball and players ability to succeed in the NBA isn't even close.
NBA success has ALOT more to do with just ability
A special run by this Riordan squad. I am sure Coach Curtin has watched the film multiple times since last night and know that he could have made some small adjustments early to frustrate Burries. There shouldn't be any negative talk and to see a City Catholic represent the north should make all the City Folks on these threads proud. WCAL has a change of the coaching guard with many new coaches in the league. Rapp may be winding down on a HOF career. Talent level was down. It goes in cycle but the blue print starts with having 4 year players that are developed. Look forward to seeing all the other WCAL programs bounce back and the league is too competitive to just stand pat.

Riordan wasn't the only team he torched. He averaged 30+ going against the SoCal Open Gauntlet. Put up 37 points against the Jr. Stud Tyran Stokes and the loaded Notre Dame squad.
Your not beating him - that is a modern game version of Carmelo Anthony . Not a potential nba player a potential nba superstar .
One Riordan weakness that became apparent at least to me if the Crusaders didn't have a traditional PG. I think that Hillman as point forward might be the best facilitator on the squad. To me Bush is more of a SG / slasher / finisher not a great distributor.
Also back on the topic of Burries how to guard him - I saw Riordan play a lot of drop coverage on high pick n roll where I would have liked the Crusaders to attempt to put a hard trap on Burries and force him to the sidelines/away from the basket. Instead I saw a lot of drop coverage which I hate in general but is especially problematic against a player of Burries caliber.

No doubt a lot more ball pressure never relenting force the ball out of his hand. Gotta play the bench in the first half just knowing there will be a tremendous amount of fouls. I know it’s ugly, but we gotta go Detroit pistons bad boys here. Riordan deepest Norcal team in a very long time. Put those boys to work. Give them a roll. It’s their time to shine. We’re not here to break personal records. We’re here to win. Key players will sit more than they’re used to. Anytime he grabs a rebound. We’re pretty much running the border line of a hack a shaq. It’s gonna get real hyphy in the gym. It’s just no other option - again he’s that good.
For those in attendance did Burries play all 32 minutes of regulation....of course on just regulation time alone he scored more than 1 point per minute...even more if substituted
Riordan Had a great season. Best team in Norcals. It's hard to win a Open State title. They will be back next year as well with Hillman, and the big kid as their pillars. And we all know they will be getting about 5 transfers as well.
