We need some answers Riordan

Fact about Roosevelt's top 3 players - Burries and Williamson transferred from Riverside Poly to Roosevelt after their freshman year and soph years, respectively. Burries turned 19 last Sept. Walker transferred from JW North after his sophomore year. All 3 played junior aau ball together. All within CIF rules, but facts.

19 years old is very relevant....mature...an advantage...nice feedback

Riordan has kids from another continent.

Again I don’t know how you adjust to him by double or triple teaming him. Gilbert Arenas was asked why didn’t you send your son to one of the power schools. He said cause I want him to learn to break double and triple teams and he did all season. And got to a state game as well.

So maybe zone and flip from a 2-3 to 2-2-1 to a 1-3-1. But to hold a coach responsible for let’s double and triple team, that’s tough. He can easily get out of all of that. They are ranked 2 in the country on the real high school list. It’s not just because of Brayden alone. He has some damn good teammates that have to be guarded as well.
Double team, zone, something, but you don't just keep doing the some thing thats not working. Basketball is about adjustments and can't not make adjustments throughout a game.

19 and another continent… True and true . The high stakes of big boy ball. It’s on another level
It's been an accredited International boarding program for over a decade. All within CIF rules, hence the mandatory SOP for transfers. Does St. Joe's have a boarding program for Tounde, Bare and the other international players?

Was coaching at a track event yesterday for CYO and noticed new "7th gr" runner that was not there last year. She already looked like at least a high school sophomore and she demolished her 100M heat. Call it sour grapes but why such governing bodies allow much older "kids" compete in high school is backwards. Are you saying there are benefits to having your kid flunk a couple grades just so they have a physical maturity advantage? Burries, if he is 19, literally was a man amongst boys.

Agree 100% basic coaching - don’t let the other teams best player beat you. Full deny, run someone at him on the catch, trap ball screens. Make someone else have a career night. Riordan was deep. Keep a fresh body on him all game. Especially put Tofi on him some to rough him up. Too late now but the 44 shoulda been on 20+ FT attempts @ least

I propose a NorCal series tournament for top NorCal teams. A six teams series with a pool play and then a championship game. Maybe simply basketball or Coaches corner digest should take this up. 1. this is good for hs basketball fans, 2. teams will get to complete against open division teams during the season.

How about the CIF just allows teams to schedule whoever they want, so we could see:

Prolific vs Riordan
Riordan vs Montverde
De La Salle vs IMG (Especially in Football)

Once the CIF changes their out of date rules, then teams like Riordan will be able to schedule more challenging opponents

Wasatch Academy which is a prep school played some CA teams a couple years back.

Let a team that is good enough challenge themselves even against prep schools

They don't even need to bother with the prep schools to find better competition.

Literally could just do 3 day trip to SoCal and hit the Valley (NDSO/HW) LA (Redondo/SJB) and the IE (Roosevelt) and get great competition. And really could pick several other SoCal schools that would give them competition they wont find in NorCal.

Burries is a senior. Scary thought if he was only a junior.

Eh lol…was thoroughly impressed with the kid last night but now I’m going to have to throw a little water on the flame.

Juniors are usually 16 going on 17. If they’re old they’re usually 17 going on 18. Brayden Burries is 19 and a half year old! NBADraft.net has his birthday listed as September 18, 2005. He will be damn near 20 by the time he graduates high school.
For measures, the same website lists Jasir Rencher’s Date of Birth as February 19, 2007 meaning he turned 18 less than a month ago.

Again, very impressed with the kid’s game last night. He is a legit 3 level scorer and by the looks of it he might be NBA bound. But let’s not act like the age advantage isn’t a thing.

They lose no matter what. 18 and 19 isn't as big as 17 and 18. He wasn't getting college coaching and training.

Lebron James was 14 when he dominated the competition. Jason Kidd was held back one grade. Fact is ballers flat out ball. Look at LeBron today. He is 41 and killing kids. At this level I don’t think being 17-19 matters. If your damn good age is just a number. Just ask LeBron. He is torching 25 years old and it’s not because of age. He is just that damn good.

I have followed WCAL basketball for a long time and if we are being honest Joey Curtain has done a good job managing the young men and the talent he has but when it comes to X's and O's and actual in game coaching he is not at the top of his profession. That being said i know a lot of coaches who would not be able to keep that amount of talent focused all year so give him a lot of credit for that.

100% agree with this. However it takes two to tango. He got the right set of players that did their job/what he asked of them. Look at prior seasons where you had players with their minds elsewhere. Can he get this level of focus and effort in back to back season? Thats just a wait and see. Nonetheless, just an incredible season for them.

Clearly the Coach ended up in the State Finals with section and NorCal titles...the R made it to the hoop finale for it all which was expected from the jump

Yet, his last game strategy at the expected end game for the R was lackluster at best...lost by a 20 piece...as for Big Arena jitters that's not the deal...R won NorCal in same arena a few days earlier

Sure, great season ....overall excellent job

In the biggest game deer in the headlight coaching

i have said that a million times. coaching talent is the hardest thing to do. even harder when there are only 32 minutes. the do more with less coaches get all the praise, but to be able to keep talent happy is much harder

you know all black people look alike and say they cousins
Hot take: I dont think Steph and Klay are black. I once heard this podcast with Aaron Gordon as guest. The question was what was his welcome to the NBA moment and he said (sorry i forget if this was during a game or at practice) a black player tested to see if Gordon was "really black"... Suffice to say Gordan passed. Im pretty sure you know how to administer this "test". LOL

Yeah, we know the story - 23 years ago!
This Roosevelt team would have torched the Crusaders (or any team) if they went zone. Roosevelt rolled through the SoCal brackets against the likes of Harvard-Westlake, Sierra Canyon, Bosco and Notre Dame. They came to Sacramento battle tested and having one of the top CA basketball players. As I mentioned in another post, I don't think any HS team would beaten Roosevelt last night. Hats off to the Mustangs.
Btw - great seeing the Doctor at Golden 1 last night supporting his alma mater, former players (coaches Curtin and Tofi) and coaches.
Grateful to support Coaches Curtin, Colville, Tofi (all former players) and Coach Pollat (great assistant coach) and Coach Guilbeaux and my Alma mater. Obviously would have preferred a different result but this team had an unbelievable season especially with how they manhandled the usually stout WCAL.
Coach Curtin is going to break a lot of records at Riordan if he continues to coach a bit longer and continues to take advantage of all the opportunities and talent Riordan offers.
The program continues to reach new heights and as Coach Isola used to say, “we don’t rebuild, we reload.”
Good luck next season and beyond and hope to witness in person the next State championship at Golden 1.

Best swishes,
Coach Forslund
