Should be a great show!

Comfy seatback chairs with a perfect viewing angle right behind the scorer's table for seven potentially terrific games... What could be better?

Game 1 at 10am: Newark Memorial v. Albany

Albany is a mystery team for me; I haven't seen them play since they've become a winning team these last couple years (new coach, maybe?), and they have a good record against a not-overly-strong schedule... but wait, they almost beat the NY Albany Academy for Boys that we'll see later on against El Cerrito. Those guys are ranked #6 in NY! However, in my time in Oregon with the fabulous holiday tourney they have up there, I've seen a number of highly-ranked NY teams come in with lots of hype and then lay an egg on-court. Is it the first-game-after-three-timezone-trip blues, or are NY teams often overrated? We'll have to wait and see...

Newark has played a strong schedule and has some strong showings including a win over El Cerrito and another over Woodcreek. They also split a pair with powerful Capital Christian, but the win was accomplished over a team with almost all of their studs in street clothes. They do seem to have a slight size advantage over Albany, too...

This game is practically a tossup and could be a barnburner to open the show... I'll pick NM by 4.

I'll get into other games later today.

Game 2, 11:30 Manteca v. Berkeley

Manteca comes off a close loss at league rival Weston Ranch and are ranked #47 at the moment by MaxPreps. Their huge front line will present a problem for Berkeley, but #113 Berkeley's team speed could very well cause just as much difficulty for Manteca. The Jackets come off a close home loss to O'Dowd. I can see only one common opponent on their records so far... Manteca beat Freedom by three in the Modesto Christian tournament, and Berkeley lost by three at Freedom. This game should come down mostly to "Can Manteca's guards manage Berkeley's pressure and get it inside to their bigs?" Has potential to be a great game, or a blowout either way... but I'll go with Manteca by 5.

Game 3, 1pm Salesian v. Sacred Heart Prep

Salesian is young but talented, often starting three sophs and a freshman and having only one senior, but comes in with a 6-game win streak after a slightly bumpy start in its tough schedule. SHP, also a young team with just one senior, is 0-4 in the tough WCAL, though three of the games were very close. Rankings: Salesian #41, SHP #276. I'll take Salesian to win by 9.

Game 4, 2:30 El Cerrito v. Albany Academy, NY

Will the real Albany Academy please stand up? Were they jet-lagged v. Albany, or is our Albany really good, or is NY's Albany overrated? Maybe we'll know after this one... Meanwhile, El Cerrito is WAYYY better than their 8-9 record would indicate. Fast, athletic, all that stuff... But they seem to fall just short vs. the top teams. Their schedule has been a death march, to be sure. Of course, one guy to watch in this game is Albany's 6'8" junior Hameir Wright, who is averaging 19 pts, 9 rebounds per game and has about half-a-dozen D1 offers. Should be a battle... I'll take EC to get the upset by 2.

Game 5 4pm, Sacramento v. Moreau

Sac is 16-0 and ranked #5 in the state, #16 nationally by MaxPreps. I saw them smack Capital Christian up at Gridley, and yup, these guys got GAME! While I was elsewhere the next night, they clobbered Saint Francis by 20. Iowa State signee Solomon Young seems to have become the monster that he has been expected to be, especially on defense.

Moreau is really talented, but except for that huge upset over powerhouse Sierra Canyon, has historically struggled v. top foes for whatever reason... But not as much this year. They have three losses, but all were at least somewhat close and to strong teams. Still, it's possible that Sac is the toughest team other than maybe Sierra Canyon that they've faced yet this year.

I'll go with Sac by 12 in what should be a ridiculously entertaining game.

Game 6 5:45 pm, host De La Salle v. Orange Lutheran

I know nothing much about Orange Lutheran, except that they lost to Mater Dei by 9 after beating St John Bosco a couple night earlier, and that their other two losses were to #19 Los Alamitos and unranked George Washington Prep.

Of course, I've seen a good bit of DLS... After all, they're my "home" team... They are loaded, plain and simple. I'll take DLS by 18.

And finally, Game 7 at 7:30 pits O'Dowd and Saint Francis.

As their win over Berkeley illustrates, O'Dowd is starting to get better. However, St. Francis is ranked #12 in CA and deserves it. This one could be blowout city, but hopefully Dragon pride will kick in and make the nightcap interesting... I'll go St. Francis by 21.

Just for clarification, it is actually Sacred Heart Cathedral (SHC) out of San Francisco as opposed to Sacred Heart Prep (SHP) out of Atherton. It is easy to get those mixed up, but SHC is the WCAL team that is playing Salesian tomorrow.

My highly-educated, fact-based only predictions:

Albany/Newark: No clue, don't care, probably almost over anyways lol
Manteca/Berkley: Manteca by 9. Too big.
SHC/Salesian: SHC by 8. Statement win for the Irish. Hollins scores 30+
EC/Albany NY: Albany by 23. Sure why not...
Sac High/Moreau: Moreau by 1. Instant Classic. No clue how this game was not the nightcap... Really bad scheduling mistake.
DLS/OLU: De La by 6.
St. Francis/Odowd: Really random, mismatched finale... Lancers by 30.

Newark Memorial beat Albany 61-58 behind 33 points from Decaurey Brown.

Manteca beat Berkeley 76-74 in double overtime. Wooten had 26 points and Hundal has 22 points.

Niles Malone had 22 points for Berkeley.

HS Cube is showing the final four games. El Cerrito's, Moreau-Sac, DLS-Orange Lutheran and St. Francis-O'Dowd

It's really difficult to get those two mixed up if you know anything about the two schools and or their teams and style of play. Diametrically opposed in all ways.

EC has come to play. They are smothering the Albany academy early on. Defensively they are attacking and making it a fast game. Hameir wright there 6"8 kid can flat out play. Otherwise they seem pretty average.

18-11 EC after 1.

Gosh I love pridgetts game. He's the best player on the floor. He makes everyone around him better. Best I've seen EC play. They look like a different team from the Jesuit tourney.

EC leads 41-23 at half.

51-34 EC heading into 4th. Pretty one sided game. There big kid has a lot of skills but he has no supporting cast.

60-57 EC with 44 left. EC should win this but it's back to the drawing board for them on handling pressure and the lead.

How did Hollins play? Was Ramzi any better on offense?
Alfred Hollins had 20 points. Not sure how Ramzi played but he only scored once early. I was following on MaxPreps. Coach has to get some defensive specialists out there.

Entertaining game between MC and Sac high. A lot of up and down play and more turnovers than assist. I think young and Terrell will translate well at next level. Both play within their limits and are team guys. I'm not sure about the gang from MC. Frayer should run track. He could go really far. Freakishly athletic. Milstead is talented but is he a leader?

Sac high leads 36-33 at half.

Now I'm glad they didn't show the SHC - Salesian game. Salesian won 62-51. Bad third quarter did it.

Every year they've been in this Classic, they've been slaughtered. I saw El Cerrito and Sacramento smoke them. Alfred Hollins has no help whatsoever.

All MC in 2nd half. They did a good job in containing young down low.

MC 77
Sac 67

Terrell brown 25
Solomon young 22

Why is #42 udenke on DLS not playing football? He would be a PAC 12 tight end. He's a low level hoop recruit at best.

Hollies chooses to shoot the ball whenever he touches it. With the lose of Mello SH has no point guard. I believe the three points SH used had over 20 turnovers with no pressure. To blame the team is kind of unfair. The boys been in ever game they lost. The coaches need to change the offensive game plan it doesn't work with out a decent point. All the turnover result in easy points for the other team. Alford needs to start playing more in the paint instead of the wing. He is the biggest on the team.
This team is horrible at offensive rebounds

DLS up early 20-10 over OL. Ratinho looks the part of a top player in NorCal. OL is no joke either. They have some players and are well coached.

I really dont have a problem with Hollins shooting it on every possession. Jamar is the only one that probably shoots over 50% because he only shoots when he gets an offensive rebound. Hillman plays well but is not an offensive threat. Robinson has regressed this year. He's been put in situations where he has to bring the ball up on a press and he turns the ball over more often than not. Smith the freshman, you can see the talent, but is going through the growing pains of a freshmen playing on varsity. I wont even mention the other guy. Awful, just awful.

Jamar is doing his best but completely oversized. Hillman is asked to do a lot on defense and doesn't get to play his game he is a slasher and doesn't get the inside pass. Nate is a shooter not a dribbler. This the time for a coach to coach these talented player.
