Preseason thoughts?

You sound like a smart guy. But remember they don't build the casino's in Vegas by paying out more than they take in.

I developed a knack for developing point spreads from my time spent in Las Vegas.

But I keep consistently reminding all that any good team can upset another good team. I am based here too... so by all means I'm supporting our local teams.

MM will have a hard time with Mater Dei. KLS gets a lot of open looks against both MM press and against their zone. Pascoe hit 8 3s and she's no KLS. At the same time MD has no real matchup for Sabrina. It will be a very exciting great game. MD by 11.

SMS by 12-15 over Sierra Canyon. Style of play is what makes these games, and Sierra Canyon cannot play at SMS pace. Kennedy Burke cannot handle that press alone, then be expected to score even with the help of Wallace, that type of game just doesn't suit them. If they can control tempo and get SMS out the press they have a shot.

I think you may be right about SMS giving Sierra Canyon a little trouble. But because Sierra Canyon has a few very athletic girls with good size they may have the answer for what teams like SMS and MM like to do. This game may come down to coaching. I am afraid to put a line out there on this one. I think it could end up being more of an uptempo offensive battle than we expect… if so it's a coin toss. It may depend on who has the most experienced and gifted athletes.

I think SMS wins 15-20 Sierra Canyon wont be able to deal with the press for 4 quarters. SMS will pull away at the end of the 3rd quarter. I think MD wins by 5-10 MM will be a very close game in the end md will make that final run at the end of the 4th like they have all year after the one's they let get away. MM might have a out side chance if the can stop that run.

I think if SMS beats MD if they play each other too!!!!!!!!!!!!

kookiebean,

You have SI ranked in the 3rd and 6th slot? I think you should clarify their spot and then add another team to your list in the vacant slot.

Kookiebean is out of the ranking business. Too many sensitive people on this board for me. Lol
My ranking was 2 weeks ago, some teams have played 8 games since then and lost 8.

I would say score does not matter this early in the season. Last year I saw a team win by 40 points to a team early in season then lose later to the same team.

Piedmont over Arcata by 72 to 32 in December
Arcata over Piedmont 50 to 38 in February.
One player missing for Piedmont but not a difference of 40 points.

Dublin is quietly 15-1, having their best season ever in awhile. I could only imagine how good they would be if
Wainwright was stiil the coach and were able to convince two talented freshmen to join their bench; one is Brandon Ashley's sister who is over 6ft (D1 volleyball recruit) who opted for varsity volleyball and the other is a speedy ball handler/defender who is a D1 soccer recruit who opted for varsity soccer. None the less I am looking forward to seeing them play Miramonte in a DFAL match up coming soon.

Trivalley,

I agree with you about Dublin. It's unfortunate when there are two sport conflicts and players have to sacrifice one for the other.
Why can't these young kids be encouraged to bring it like the ole school athletes ala Prime time, and Bo Jackson?(smile)

Carondelet is facing the same situation with one of their best returning players Christina Chenualt opting to dedicate herself to track and field. Carondelet also has a new head coach.

But on the positive both coaches and teams have found a way to excel regardless. They're winning anyway( imagine that)

Coaches motivate, and hold the keys that give kids an opportunity to shine.

Many times team's have very capable players sitting on the bench. Those capable players just need to be prepared for the opportunity to prove themselves. Apparently Dublin has been getting the job done. I have not seen them play this year, but I look forward to seeing them.

Under NCS rules athletes can play two sports during the same time but strict time guide lines are in place to prevent double practices or games. This makes it impossible to actually practice with either team and only a game day player.

Moreover the principal and athletic director must approve AND BOTH coaches must agree to allow this. When does NCS and the school become the parent? If a student can maintain her/his grades what's the problem? Megan Reid was allowed to play two sports at Miramonte and last I checked she made it to the final four with Virginia at the D1 NCAA soccer championships.

You don't see the schools limiting AP courses to prevent mental breakdown, etc. like on the movie "Race to Nowhere". Just saying.

Trivalley,

Those are great points. My feelings exactly ! But the parents have to be on board with encouraging the athlete to try both too.
Of course each circumstance is different and parents must feel the risk is worth it.

One thing to consider is the impact on the other players. So a girl does the offseason work, plays all summer, goes to every open gym and fall league, and then another girl shows up to a couple practices, and starts, what does that teach everyone? And what if the star only comes to one practice a week?

As for seasons that don't overlap, if you have a scholarship of some sort in the offing, do you really want to risk tearing your ACL playing basketball?

There are a lot of factors involved in these decisions ...

Clay,

"Someone once said that the human race is fixed, not to prevent the strong from winning, but to prevent the weak from losing", Earl Nightingale[/B].

Our creator didn't give everyone the same gifts.

If that were the case players like Jordan,Kobe, Lebron, Griner,Taurasi, and Maya Moore etc…. who continue on wouldn't be as great as they are.

Some players will only make it to be a good middle school player. While some others will max out at the high school or college level. But let's encourage the special and super gifted to have more opportunities. Let's reward and celebrate their greatness, not hate or penalize them for it.

Of course there are risk in every decision you make. And you can get hurt in practice. It is difficult decisions that separate many ultra successful business people. You can't live your life being too scared. Les Brown once said "you can't get out of this life alive". Make bold decisions and take a few chances. There are not many guarantees, one way or the other.

Here is another interesting myth…….(For the male players only)

You should stay in school and graduate, not enter the draft early. Really? Ok so you decide to enter your final year and get a career changing or career ending injury. Now you've blown the chance to sign a multi- million dollar deal?

You graduate college and you may or may not find a job related to your field of study. Both decisions are just that, decisions. But the perception is college will close it's doors to an athlete who decided to cash in and turn pro. No the reality is you can always go back to school but you can't always sign a multi- million dollar deal. Decisions? Get use to making them, because you have no other choice.

I could respect either decision because your college experience will be some of the best years of your life. But the reality is after graduating college, unless your family is rich, you must deal with the money problem. Decisions? Get use to making them…..

I could be totally wrong with my views on these subjects? But I thought I would paint the background or other side of the picture.

Any thoughts????

I'm not sure high school is the place to celebrate greatness ... I'm thinking maybe that comes later in life.

At the same time, though, if a girl can help the team win and boost the program, then she's going to play. The loyalty and commitment aspect is a factor, but not necessarily a definitive one. Still, though, if there is value to interscholastic sports, shouldn't that value be extended to a many young people as possible rather than restricting it to a smaller number of elite talents?

Clay,

I can respect your take on it. Here is mine…….

Life is short. It's never too soon to appreciate greatness. And there are different levels and different sporting options.

I would encourage young people to find their lane. My guess is that is why there are freshman,JV, and Varsity levels.

But from a fans perspective, I would have wanted Bo Jackson to just play just football. But many baseball fans appreciate his baseball game. And as a young talented player it's not so simple to choose between two or three sports you love and are good at.

Paytc- excellent perspective on life. Thanks for reminding us of the importance of celebrating success and greatness every chance we get. Life is short.

Thanks ol' Brick Layer !

But I do think the word should be "appreciate" not necessarily the word "celebrate". Although celebrating success is good.

I have learned the value in the "principle of appreciation". Whatever you value or appreciate, grows or appreciates.

So if you want to see or experience more of anything just show them or it your appreciation. You know the saying…….

Don't hate congratulate(smile).
