WCAL Week Four

Schedule:

SHC, 1-2, at Valley Christian, 3-0, Friday at 7 p.m.
St. Francis, 3-0, at St. Ignatius, 3-0, Friday at 7 p.m. (double-check time)
Bellarmine, 0-3, at Riordan, 1-2, Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Mitty, 0-3, at Serra, 1-2, Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Notes:

VC heavy favorite vs. SHC
SF vs. SI is a tossup
Riordan heavy favorite vs. Bellarmine
Serra heavy favorite vs. Mitty
I am not sure we can say Serra is a heavy favorite, except when they play they Bells. This Serra team is very average. They could easily lose to Riordan, and Valley, 3-4 in league, 4-6 overall is a possibility. Can they make CCS if they have a below 500 record? I am not sure how they beat Folsom

Aidan Mahaney looked great tonight for UConn!

UConn 102-75 over URI in at Hoophall in an exhibition.

Aidan was a bit quiet in the first half, got pushed around some (but still scored 5) ...

But he was a LOT more assertive in the 2nd half, ending up with 17 points on 6 of 9 shooting, 3 of 5 from the arc. 3 assists, 2 steals...

Didn't start, but he played 23 minutes, 3rd most on the team.

Not bad for that kid from the back alleys of Moraga!

Week 8 Scores

I agree with you this is gonna be a tough league to win. Windsor, CN or MC will be tough to beat. Staying away from Open Division might be a place to avoid
Yeah it comes down to a lot of little things. A PAT in the case of Windsor. Hope Newman can course correct a little offensively because they need to clean that up. As long as Anderson is utilized correctly for Windsor they have a shot. I would put him in wildcat more and let him do his thing.

Week 8 Scores

2 key things I took away.
1. Windsor had a great game plan like you said. Shortening the game, run the clock, dominate time of possession. It worked greatly.
2. Newman's offense is just not very in synch and put way to much emphasis on passing game which like you said led to some long 3rd downs. You got one of the best RB in the section (gentry) so why not utilize him? The lack of offensive schemes by Newman nearly cost them this game.

The better team won but Windsor's game plan was so much better they almost pulled it out. Recall last year Windsor had so much speed they did the opposite and spread out Newman.

Lots of Football left to play and I think 1 and 2 in league this year will be Newman and Windsor with MC knocking on the door.

I agree with you on SRV..,,, I think their Big Missing Piece from the last 2 years is Luke Baker who is playing Both FB and Baseball at Sac State this year….. that kid is an incredible athlete and leader..,,,,

After watching Cal vs SRV I think DLS will neutralize Marco Jones and dictate the game to SRV and win like 31-17…..

PITT is the big problem I see for DLS with their offense…. If that game happens I see it like when DLS played Cen10 in the Open and won 60 something to 40 something….. not sure that PITT will be able to stop this version of the DLS veer….

Folsom will Destroy whoever they pay in any Regional play in game…. I still can’t figure out how Serra beat them…, 🤣
Folsom lines weren't very good against Serra. WCAL at the top is stronger than SFL this season. Folsom would have tough games against St Francis and SI. WCAL team plays defense and Folsom has trouble against ball control teams that play really good defense. Folsom would have tough time competing in WCAL this season.

SFL This Week 9-27

SFL Recap
Oak Ridge 23-3 Over Jesuit. Was 3-3 at half and Jesuit just shot themselves multiple times in the foot. Muffed punt lead to a score, and tons of penalties. OR was better team but score was closer.
Folsom 58-0 Over DO. No suprise. Long year for DO and nice to see Folsom throwing late in the 4th up 50+.
Rocklin throttles Davis 48-7
Granite Bay all over Whitney 49-10

Only good game this week is Granite Bay vs Rocklin. I could see that one going either way but I would say Rocklin is the favorite.

WCAL 2024-25 SEASON

So now we go from Riordan Competing for CCS Open with 10 or more D1 players to now being a D2 team?….. 🤣

Any team with 10 or more D1 players should be embarrassed to be in any D2 level and not competing for the Nor Cal Open spot…..

Riordan is just not living up to their hype, and either their talent is Vastly overrated or their Coach is not very good….

Just looks at Riordans best win which was over McClymonds….. Riordan was up 14-0 in that game then went down by 14 and had to come back and win….

This is not a good team…. They are proving to be very average…. And big deal about their schedule…. It’s not like they played Serra’s schedule….
3-7 with 2 wins against SH in their last 10

It may even force the Bulldogs down to D-1A if Clovis East is undefeated in the CS.

Will be really interesting to see how it will be decided. Pitt, DLS, and SRV contenders in the NCS (although I think the Wolfpack may be a little bit smoke and mirrors, relatively speaking). The NCS D-Open will likely be the CIF D-Open rep with the NCS D-1 winner going to D-1AA. Could be CCS D-Open winner versus Folsom in D-1A.

WCAL Week Four

The St. Francis at St. Ignatius game should be a good one. The winner of this one will likely end up the WCAL champ barring some wildcard defeat down the road. After this game, the following teams to contend with:
SF - SHC, VC & AR. SF should beat all three teams but VC or AR could bring a wildcard loss.
SI - VC, SHC & AM. SI should beat all three teams. But VC has historically played very good against SI over the years.

Both teams come into this game with a 5-1 record. SF's loss was at the hands of DLS while SI lost to SRV. Interestingly, DLS and SRV will be playing this weekend at DLS's house.

SI tends to perform better in the second half their games. SF tends to be consistent throughout the whole game. It seems SI surprises its opponents with a strong finish. SF, however, have the benefit of preparing for this strong finish that some of SI's other opponents didn't have.

SI tends to have a stronger pass offense while SF has a stronger rush offense. But both teams are productive on the ground and in the air. SI has a slight advantage here IMO. Both teams have shown good defensive plays. I give SF the slight advantage on the defense side, although their poor performance against DLS is troubling.

This game might come down to the team who makes the least mistakes. I am giving a slight advantage to SI since the game is on their home turf.
The reason SF lost to DLS is their passing game…. SF is a running team and to beat DLS this year you need to throw the ball like ST Mary’s Did for 300+ yards and multiple TD’s…..

If you can’t do that DLS will grind you into oblivion with their veer, which happened to SF….

I am voting for this game as Game of the week, I like SF in this game with their Defense and Running game…. They just need to hit a couple of play action passes and I think they take it like 21-17…..

Both SF and SI are fantastic teams!!….

This is going to be a real close one. Would be shocked if one team blew out the other. SI does have an "X" factor with their kicker Kenny who can make 40+ yards FGs. It actually might come down to a kick. This almost assuredly wont be the last time these two see each other and they are both on course to face off again in CCS Open.

As someone that wants the Lancers to win for obvious reasons, I can outline for their defense that Hummel's bread and butter is a misdirection 10 yard out pattern that he throws before his receiver even turns his head. Force him to throw over the top and there are INT chances. Lancers line should be fairly stout to play an aggressive quarters zone to be ready for those out patterns.

Theres no secret on offense. Give them Kingston 40 times and take a shot on a play action to Perriyon Williams.

WCAL 2024-25 SEASON

Riordan is an odd case.

They’re 2-4. 3 of their losses have come against top 10-15 Bay Area programs and one of their losses on the road to a team who gifted Folsom a state championship last season. On the flip side, one of their wins came against an SHC team who anyone with a pulse should beat and a McClymonds team that is arguably underperforming (21-0 W to Fremont is eye opening). So one might argue that they’re not nearly as bad as that 2-4 record indicates. Others might argue that those two wins are reaches.

Just for the sake of conversation, let’s say they go 2-2 to end the year and are in a “Last Team In / First Team Out” scenario come the playoffs……who in the open division really wants to see them a second time? They’re as talented as anyone. I get that SI beat them but they had to fight their asses off for that one. Is a second matchup against a team that wants revenge really what they want?

And now, let’s say they end up in Division 2…who in their right mind is going to want to play them? As of tonight PAL Booster has Christopher, Menlo-Atherton, Wilcox, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Burlingame, Menlo, Monterey and Palma…which one of those teams have the horse power to match up with them?!
So now we go from Riordan Competing for CCS Open with 10 or more D1 players to now being a D2 team?….. 🤣

WCAL 2024-25 SEASON

There is no doubt that Riordan created a good schedule. And you are right that their losses are typically from top rated teams. So everything you post seems right. It would, however IMO, be disgraceful for them to be moved to CCS DII playoffs.

Even though you are correct about Riordan's record, I am sure the negative tone towards them right now is related to disappointment of their talent potential vs their actual field play. I, for one, thought they would have an exceptional year. And a few proponents suggested this was Riordan's year to shine bright in NorCal. So far, none of these expectations has materialized. And now to consider a CCS DII placement is just such a low expectation.
Would Riordan even be playoff eligible at 4-6?

Bellarmine in dire straits

I looked up the WCAL year by year record books and these were the last league titles by Bellarmine in each sport:
Baseball: 2013 (shared)
Basketball: 2020 (shared)
Cross Country: 2023
Football: 2015 (shared)
Golf: 2024 (shared)
Soccer: 2016
Swimming/Diving: 2024
Tennis: 2024
Track and Field : 2023
Volleyball: 2019
Water Polo: 2024

Id say their athletic department is doing quite well. Their other athletes are achieving and winning titles. Are we just upset that they arent awesome at EVERY SINGLE SPORT? Based on the list above it looks like they are awesome at alot of sports. Just not one in particular.
As a Bellarmine Grad and the father of a Bellarmine son these numbers are not what Bellarmine is about or ever has been. The last soccer title almost a decade ago, baseball more than a decade ago, so on and so on. We expect more out of this school and with 1600 boys the school should be delivering more. Be better Bellarmine and fix this problem.
