Games Notes: Grant moves past St. Mary's-Stockton 28-21

The Pacers are one win away from a third straight SJS title after beating St. Mary's-Stockton 28-21 in the SJS Division II semi-finals.

Grant gained control of the game with the running of Brandon Lambert behind a jumbo formation led by Roger Vanderhoef. After St. Mary's scored a touchdown to start the third quarter, Grant closed on a 14-0 run with the running game leading the way.

Both of St. Mary's touchdowns came when they started with the ball in Grant's red zone with the first coming off a bad punt snap by the Pacers.

St. Mary's junior Kenneth Moore III and sophomore Osani Gayles both showed off their big play potential with kickoff returns that gave the Rams the ball in the red zone.

Grant sophomore Koby Shabazz has gotten his fair share of attention, but the 2027 prospect is one of the top sophomores in the region. He made a number of contested catches on Friday and took a screen 59 yards for a touchdown.

Grant senior Jeremiah Tuiileila doesn't have ideal size for defensive end, but he is one of the best pass rushers in NorCal. He has a quick first step and can win going inside or racing around the edge. Tuiileila is a strong pickup for San Diego State.

Game Notes: Rocklin rolls in second half to beat Manteca 30-7

Rocklin turned two Manteca second half interceptions into touchdowns as a 7-7 tie at the half turned into a 30-7 win. The Thunder are now headed back to the SJS Division II title game where they will take on Grant.

Despite being tied at the half, Rocklin dominated this semi-final behind a strong defensive effort especially agianst the run. The Thunder won the line of scrimamge and let their linebackers flow to the ball.

Junior quarterback Reeve Slone missed some deep throws early the game, but settled in with three touchdown passes to senior Mavrik Collins. Two of three were deep throws with the final score coming on a slant.

Manteca has a trio of skill players to watch coming back with junior WR/CB Quinn Martinez, sophomore running back Nikko Juarez and freshman tight end Nate Slikker. Junior DE Mathieu Evans (6-foot-4, 210 pounds) also is a prospect to watch.

Some Predictions Tnite

Rain, Rain, and more Rain..

NCS Open/D1
DLS 24
Pitt 20
I think DLS ends up beating Pitt in a very close game. If Pitt were to win this would be the year.

SRV 17
Newman 10
Tough to bet against SRV at home. Newman will likely struggle to score and Newmans D will keep them in the game.

NCS D2
I think Liberty and Amador Valley Both advance. Windsor will play AV tough and I think Liberty beats Odowd easily.

SJS D1
Folsom 35
INDY 28
Indy puts another scare in Folsom, but the bulldogs pull away late on the feet of Ryder Lyons.

OR 21
Turlock 14

Turlock is much improved but OR might be playing as good as anybody right now. I look for them to advance in a rematch against Folsom.

SJS D2
Manteca 30
Rocklin 20
Call this a mild upset but I like Manteca in this one.

St Marys 35
Grant 30

Rams at home will take the pacers.

PCAL Playoffs Week II

PCAL Playoffs Week II –

Gabilan-
Exactly as I predicted. The top 3 team lost bay a combined score of 121-21. Theses teams were playing in DI and DII and quite frankly did not get great matchups. But still I thought Soquel, Salinas and Monterey should have had much closer games. The Good news is the bottom of division had more favorable match ups and were able to win and advance. Congratulations to Palma, Hollister and Aptos. I take full credit for the Hollister and Palma victories, as I picked against them last week, and as they have done seemingly every week, they did the opposite of my prediction. This week all 3 have a little bit tougher match up. ( Hollister Prediction in Mission South)

Fri 11/22 Palo Alto (CA) vs Aptos (CA), 7:00pm D III Playoffs – The Bay league went 6-0 in first round matchups. That is impressive. I want to pick Aptos here in a upset, but I think Palo Alto gets by them. None the less, a decent year for Aptos's new head coach, the team is young and they have something to build on for next year. Palo Alto 24-20

Sat 11/23 Menlo (Atherton, CA) vs Palma (Salinas, CA), 7:00 PM D II Playoffs –
I am not sure how Palma is favored in this game. Menlo’s part of the 6-0 Bay league, every team made the playoffs and every team won their first game. Palma struggled (for them) in the Gabilan this year. Menlo lost 3 league games a blow out by Los Gatos and 2 close games with Wilcox and Menlo -Atherton. I think Menlo will win this game. But if Palma can establish the running game and limit pressure on their young QB they can win. Menlo 23-21

Mission North
- North Monterey County’s season came to an abrupt end in the 4th Qtr last week vs Branham where they gave up 18 unanswered points. But the season has to be considered successful, as the culture around the program is changing. The HC has done a great job of installing confidence into this program, they won some games this year they would of lost in years past. Alisal won their D V match up and I believe things line up nicely for them in this division, they do have a tough, but winnable match up this weekend.

Fri 11/22 Alisal (Salinas, CA) vs Leland (San Jose, CA), 7:00pm D V Playoffs – Alisal could be peaking at the right time. After new coach regime “opened” up the offense this year, there were some worries about being able to score enough points. But over the past 5 games (4-1) = they have averaged 30+ pints. Thant should be enough to beat a very talented Leland squad. Alisal 28-17

Mission South-
North Salinas lost a heartbreaker to Burlingame last week. But this program is headed in the right Direction. Similar to NMC, the coach has done a great job changing the cultural of the program. I see no reason why they won’t be competitive in the B leagues for the next few years. Carmel almost choked a way a 42-19 lead last Friday. But thanks to their 2nd special teams TD, they were able to hold off San Mateo’s comeback effort. Carmel needs to refocus on defense if they want to win the DIII championship. The last 2 games have been way closer than they should have been.

Fri 11/22 Hollister (CA) vs Carmel (CA), 7:00pm D III Playoffs – There was a time until the 1988 season, that these 2 teams were in the same league (the MTAL). Then they realized schools with 2000+ populations should move to a league with other schools of similar size. In 2019 they were both in the Gabilan, and Carmel thoroughly dominated a decent Hollister team. This Carmel Team is way better, at least offensively. But Carmel’s tackling (lack of) really scares me. The almost blew a 3 TD lead. Here is some advice to Hollister just onside kick every time. Carmel 45-35

Santa Lucia -
Well if you are going to become a football power you need to learn to win on the road. RLS has never won a road playoff game, 0-4 all time. Granted this is a team that does not go to the playoffs very often, so there is that. Anyways great season, and this team is fairly young and should be bumped up to the B division next year, where they will be favored by me to go 10-0. Truth is they should be competitive with the other B programs in the PCAL if they can stay healthy. Congratulations on the 2024 Santa Lucia Championship!

Bonus Picks

DII
Fri 11/22 Wilcox (Santa Clara, CA) vs Menlo-Atherton (Atherton, CA), 7:00pm DII Playoffs

Fri 11/22 Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton, CA)vs Branham (San Jose, CA), 7:00pm DIV Playoffs
Fri 11/22 Piedmont Hills (San Jose, CA) vs Burlingame (CA), 7:00pm DIV Playoffs

Cal-Hi NorCal Rankings

For four bucks a month, Cal-Hi remains one of the best values out there. Truly appreciate the effort and thought they put into their preseason rankings and accompanying narratives, even when there is cause to quibble.

Folsom (#9 in state)
McClatchy (#11)
O'Dowd (#13)

Riordan's Big Moment

The time is now. Followers of the Crusaders' football program have been waiting for three years for this moment. The team is on the brink of a significant accomplishment. If it can defeat Los Gatos next weekend in the CCS Division I playoffs, it will then play for a section championship and a slot in the CIF NorCal playoffs. The Crusaders dismantled Soquel on Saturday. That followed big WCAL wins vs. Serra and St. Francis. Riordan is finally playing up to its talent level. That's a scary thought. The Riordan roster, though not especially deep, is bursting with big-time individual star power. Until now, it has clearly under-performed. But the outlook has turned brighter, mainly because the defense has been shored up and mistakes are being kept to a minimum. Crusader backers are on a high _ with fingers crossed.

Very Early Look at the CIF Bowl Divisions - 2024

As it is now playoff season for nearly all CIF sections, it may be time to take a very early look at the potential CIF bowl divisions (for those interested).

Salinas vs Soquel at "The Pit"

Salinas and Soquel- two of the top public school programs in the CCS- meet this Friday at "The Pit" in Salinas. If you have never attended a game there- I would highly recommend it. The atmosphere is second to none- with a sunken field and seating right on top of the playing surface- a truly memorable enviroment. I had the opportunity to play there in 1970 as a QB for Monterey Peninsula College versus Hartnell- very
raucous!
As for the matchup this week- it appears both teams come in playing their best football- as it should be. Both teams played solid non league schedules- Soquel having lost narrowly to Los Gatos and San Ramon Valley and disposing of Valley Christian. Salinas got thumped by Clovis- The #4 team in the Central Section- but disposed of Valley Christian and Arroyo Grande- the #14 ranked team in the Central Section. The two teams are playing for the Gabilan division championship. If the Salinas QB was still hobbled- I think Soquel would have been favored- however the Salinas QB appears to be healthy again and I have the game as a pickem.
