Battle at the Trail Saturday

I see there is a Simply basketball event at Monterey Trail high school Saturday. I don’t know if this is the final lineup. I’m not sure if this is all the games.

(Monterey Trail HS – 1/11/25)

11:30 am Venture Academy (Stockton) vs. The King’s Academy

1:00 Hug (Reno, Nev.) vs. St. Paul-St. Vincent (Vallejo)

2:30Lincoln (Stockton) vs. Vanden (Travis AFB)

4:00 Monterey Trail (Elk Grove) vs. Sacramento

5:30 Modesto Christian vs Inglewood

Just Watched

The second half of a game. And wow it was hard to watch on YouTube. Shots hitting the side of the backboard, barely hitting the rim. And air balls left and right. Is this the current state of high school basketball. Thank God I got to witness an era of unreal talent and skills and some who even went onto make millions. Cause if this is the state of high school basketball and people applaud this, LMAO. That was not good or championship basketball at all. PS stick to robotics.

McKenna Woliczko

Her season-ending injury has a cascading series of impacts, both for her, for the Mitty program and beyond. It would not be out of line to suggest that, in the pantheon of outstanding female basketball players produced in Northern California over the last 40 or so years, she has to be ranked among the best we've seen here, at least so far. She is a stunning prospect, tall, quick, agile, selfless and coachable by all accounts, one of the finest in the nation to be sure. Able to play any position, she is one of those rare basketball gems who, by her very presence on both ends of the floor, combined with her athletic abilities, makes her teammates better. That's the hallmark of greatness at any level of the sport. Losing her for the rest of this season _ and who knows how long heading into the next _ is a huge blow to all concerned. Without her, Mitty becomes very good, not great, not top-tier, not a nationally-ranked, elite powerhouse. She is that good, that dominant in so many ways. Oh, lest we forget, she is also a fabulous softball player, a smooth shortstop who is a college prospect in that sport too. We can only hope that she will fully recover from this injury and return to the basketball court (and maybe the softball field) sometime during the 2025-26 school year.

Apologies to Salesian

I just want to personally apologize to Salesian and their amazing Coach Mellis. I learned today from a very well known coach that due to the threats of volcanic activity in Hawaii that some other teams backed out that you would have played. Your league is pretty cupcake but I know Coach Mellis is one hell of a coach and he will prepare you for a state run as always. Good luck. I got De La Salle as a sleeper. I hope to see you all play soon

The gender dilemma

It was bound to happen. Last weekend, a Branson School female distance runner was denied a spot in the CIF track and field finals by a boy who identifies as a girl. He finished second. She finished fourth, and out of the state finals. Among the biological girls, she finished third (and would have qualified for the finals without the biological boy's presence in the race). There is outrage all around, on all sides. Feminists and other strong advocates for female athletes are not pleased. Supporters of transgender individuals are unhappy with those angry about the situation. It's a mess. Lay the blame on CIF officials who don't adhere to gender-specific norms advanced throughout the world. The question becomes: When will CIF poobahs align their gender-based rules with fair and reasonable moves taken at higher levels of sports competition?
