Three PAL Football Titles Up for Grabs

November 06, 2015, 05:00 AM By Nathan Mollat
San Mateo Daily Journal

One of the most entertaining seasons of Peninsula Athletic League football in years is rapidly coming to a close with only two regular-season games remaining before the playoffs.

While there are still three weeks before the start of the Central Coast Section playoffs, there will be plenty of playoff-caliber excitement this weekend, as titles in all three PAL divisions — the Bay, Ocean and Lake — will be on the line Friday.

In the Bay Division, Menlo-Atherton has a chance at clinching sole possession of the championship if the Bears can beat Burlingame. A Panthers win, however, and there is the possibility of a tri-championship with M-A, Burlingame and a Sacred Heart Prep victory.

Hillsdale will play for the Ocean Division crown when it hosts Menlo. A win would give Hillsdale the title alone, but a Menlo win — coupled with a Half Moon Bay victory — could create co-champs.

“We don’t want to be ‘co’-(champs),” Parodi said. “We want to be the (champs).”

The surprise of the season has to be in the Lake Division where Capuchino is suddenly the team to beat. While the Mustangs can’t win the Lake title Friday when it hosts Carlmont, they can assure themselves at least a piece of it with Mills looming during Rivalry Week next week.

“It’s awesome,” to see all these division races coming down to the wire, Parodi said. “I’m glad we’re involved in it. That Burlingame-M-A game? I’m excited to see how that turns out. You think about the strength of the PAL overall, we have an impressive league. I think it says a lot about our coaches and players.”

Bay Division

Menlo-Atherton (4-0, 5-3)

at Burlingame (3-1, 7-1), 7 p.m.

The Panthers had their hopes for an undefeated regular season dashed last week in a 42-33 loss to Sacred Heart Prep, but they can still capture a share of the PAL Bay Division title with a win over the Bears.

M-A, however, is on a roll, having won five in a row, including a 49-28 win over Terra Nova last week. With a chance to win the outright Bay Division championship, don’t expect the Bears to have a letdown now.

“When you see M-A on your schedule, you want to play them early because they get better as they go along,” said Burlingame coach John Philipopoulos.

The Bears defense has been especially good during their winning streak. Since entering Bay Division play, they are allowing an average of 19 points per game. While Terra Nova did rack up more than 400 yards of offense, the M-A defense sacked Tigers’ quarterbacks six times, including three from Marcus Gershenberg.

“(We have to) find a way to control their front seven,” Philipopoulos said.

Don’t expect a lot of drop-back passing from Burlingame, however. The Panthers play a smashmouth style of offense, sprinkling in just enough pass plays to keep defenses honest. Last week, Laipeli Palu rushed for 174 yards and three touchdowns, while Joevani Garcia added two more scores on the ground.

This could be one of those games that is over in an about 90 minutes because both teams like to grind it out on the ground. The winner will be the team that can limit mistakes and control the line of scrimmage.

“I expect it to be a tight, close, physical game,” Philipopoulos said.

Ocean Division

Menlo School (2-2, 6-2) at Hillsdale (4-0, 7-1), 7 p.m.

No rest for the weary. Hillsdale, which faced a Half Moon Bay team last week that was averaging 38 points per game, now gets an always-dangerous Menlo squad, one that is averaging 28 points per game.

But Menlo has struggled offensively the last three weeks, including last week’s 14-13 win over South City. Since entering Ocean Division play, Menlo is averaging only 22.2 points per game. Over the last three weeks, however, that number has dropped to an average of 18 points.

Menlo struggled last week against a physical South City defense, managing just 96 yards of offense.

The Menlo defense, on the other hand, has stepped up its game. It has given up 20 points or less in three of its last four games. Last week, it had three players finish with double-digit tackles: Charlie Ferguson finished with 16, while Charlie Roth and Hayden Pegley each had 11.

Hillsdale showed a lot of heart in rallying from a two-touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Half Moon Bay 37-34.

As usual, Hillsdale relied on one of the best 1-2 punches in the PAL in quarterback Brett Wetteland and running back Cameron Taylor. Wetteland had one of the finest games of his career last week, completing 18 of 29 passes for 309 yards and three scores, without any interceptions.

Taylor simply did what he’s been doing all season long — dominate the running game. He rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. It’s the seventh straight game he’s eclipsed the 100-yard mark and he’s rushed for 1,215 yards and 19 touchdowns on the season.

“Menlo is a very good team,” Parodi said. “Their two losses are to two very good teams.”

Lake Division

Carlmont (2-2, 3-5) at Capuchino (3-0, 4-4), 2:45 p.m.

Carlmont ran into a bit of a buzzsaw last week in a 49-21 loss to San Mateo. It was the first time since Lake Division play began that the Scots have allowed more than 40 points. Otherwise, the Carlmont defense has been fairly stingy since the start of division play. They held Jefferson to just 21 points three weeks ago and allowed a total of 12 points against El Camino and Mills, combined.

Capuchino may have cleared its biggest hurdle in beating Jefferson last week, 49-44. The Grizzlies have the division’s most explosive offense, yet the Mustangs figured out a way to outscore Jefferson.

It’s safe to say Capuchino will not face any player in Lake Division play as electric as Jefferson’s Damari Cual-Davis, which should be good news for the Mustangs’ defense. After pitching back-to-back shutouts, Capuchino’s defense was run ragged by Jefferson. But the Mustangs will be facing a more traditional, run-first offense in Carlmont and Capuchino has proven it can stop the run, much as it did to San Mateo in a 41-0 win Oct. 23.

Capuchino running back Damien Jacobs continues to be the biggest surprise of the season in the PAL, rushing for a staggering 376 yards and four touchdowns last week.

NCS Playoff Predictions (1 week early)

I tried this a few weeks ago, but now that the seedings are a week away, I thought I'd take another stab at it.

D-I

1 - DLS
2 - Foothill
3 - Pittsburg
4 - Antioch
5 - Monte Vista
6 - Freedom
7 - Amador Valley
8 - California
9 - Logan
10 - San Leandro
11 - Dublin
12 - Dougherty Valley
13 - Irvington

Teams that would qualify with a win this weekend = Liberty (Freedom), San Ramon Valley (Monte Vista), College Park (Clayton Valley). I don't think any of that happens

So yes, I'm still predicting a Pirates win over Antioch this weekend, which sets up the top 4 seeds. If Antioch wins, I think they'll get the 2 seed over Foothill, but wouldn't bet my life on it. I don't know how they'll settle the 5-8 seeds for sure (MV beat Amador Valley, who beat Cal, who beat MV), but I gave the top of these to MV for their win over Pittsburg, then Freedom for their tough schedule, then went AV > Cal based on head-to-head. Logan beat San Leandro, but since that's their best win, I have them 9 & 10. Dublin beat Dougherty Valley, and Irvington barely qualified by beating 5 really bad teams.

With a win over Tennyson this weekend, San Leandro would win their league and get a home playoff game at Burrell, which could be interesting for a game against the 7 seed (I list Amador Valley). I wouldn't be shocked to see San Leandro win a game. And in the end, DLS will likely run the table.

D-II

1 - Clayton Valley
2 - Miramonte
3 - Concord
4 - Tennyson
5 - American
6 - Granada
7 - Pinole Valley
8 - Casa Grande (who has to beat Montgomery this weekend to qualify)
9 - Windsor
10 - Carrillo
11 - Livermore
12 - Alameda
13 - Northgate
14 - Redwood
15 - Hayward
16 - Washington

Mt. Eden will likely qualify by beating San Lorenzo, but I think they end up being the odd team out. Washington's win over American is better than anybody Mt. Eden beat by far. I don't see anybody preventing a Clayton Valley/Miramonte final.

D-III

1 - Campolindo
2 - Analy
3 - Rancho Cotate
4 - Alhambra
5 - Petaluma
6 - De Anza
7 - Bishop O'Dowd
8 - El Cerrito
9 - Eureka
10 - Acalanes
11 - Kennedy
12 - Novato (need to beat San Rafael this weekend)
13 - Terra Linda
14 - Piner
15 - Ygnacio Valley
16 - Sonoma Valley (have to beat Allen this weekend)

Pee yew! Less than half of these teams will be over .500 going into the playoffs. Somebody called this "the most interesting division" earlier this week? Different strokes, I guess. I have Petaluma and De Anza higher than they probably should be based on winning records over really weak schedules, and I wouldn't be shocked if, say, a Kennedy managed to win in the first round. It sets up an Analy/Rancho semifinal for the right to take on Campo.

D-IV

1 - Cardinal Newman
2 - Marin Catholic
3 - Fortuna
4 - Moreau Catholic
5 - Fort Bragg
6 - Piedmont
7 - Justin-Siena
8 - St. Mary's
9 - St. Helena
10 - San Marin
11 - Hercules
12 - Harker
13 - Del Norte
14 - Encinal
15 - Lower Lake
16 - Healdsburg

Now THIS is the most interesting division in NCS. OK, D-I would have been if it weren't for the fact that DLS is going to win it. I could easily see the committee making Fortuna the 1 seed - they're undefeated and the teams they've beaten stack up against MC and CN's best wins. Plus, I could see the committee not liking what their move back to D-IV did both to the D-III bracket and this one, and what better way to let them know than forcing them to play in a semifinal instead of the final? I went with CN over MC because I think their strength of schedule is higher. I went with Moreau at 4 over Fort Bragg in part because I'm not sure they'll give the Redwood Empire the top 4 seeds. Similarly, I think Piedmont's wins are better than St. Mary's wins, and with their head-to-head over Justin-Siena it set up 6-8. I won't be stunned if St. Helena moves up into a top 8 seed at 9-1. I don't see anybody after 9 really making any noise. I think the CN/MC winner is the favorite, but don't sleep on Fortuna!

We'll see how good or bad these are when the seedings come on next Sunday...

MaxPreps SJS projected playoffs

I thought this was interesting:
http://www.maxpreps.com/news/jdKv6w...aquin-section-football-projections--nov-3.htm

For D1, I would project that Folsom will beat Elk Grove -- I don't see EG as having played anybody yet, but it will be a good game. You could argue Grant, but something seems to be missing at Grant this year. The winner is then projected to play either Clayton Valley or Bellarmine, and I think either EG or Folsom will win, going to the state championship.

For D2, you heard it hear first: I think Rocklin, with a 6-3 record, will upset Antelope, win the section and go to the Norcal title game! No idea who the norcal DII (or 1-AA?) playoff might be with.

Does Grant have an X-factor? Is someone coming back from injuries that could make a difference for the Pacers?
And for Rocklin, I'm a bit surprised at how close the game was with GB. Am I too hyped on the Thunder?

LAST ROUND PREDICTIONS.....ebal,dfal,dbal,bval...freelance

Friday/Sat. there is a lot on the line for a number of teams that need to win to get a good or better position on the playoffs. Also there are four big games to be played.....Amador Valley vs foothill, Monte Vista vs San Ramon Valley, Antioch vs Pittsburg which is the game of the week and Piedmont vs Alameda.
If Amador Valley wins they are tied for first place, but will be the champs by beating Foothill...If Foothill wins, they are the champ with no league looses. If Monte vista wins and Amador Valley looses, we have a tie for second place.
Piedmont and Alameda are both 4-0 and the winner gets the crown for the West Alameda Shoreline league.. The game of the week sports Antioch invading Pittsburg on Saturday at 1:30 P.m....will it be a royal shoot out or will a defensive game take place...both teams know how to score, so there is going to be fire works and not like the Campolindo-Miramonte game..so be prepared for some serious football..

FREELANCE
California 4-2/6-3 at DLS 8-1.....DLS 41 California 10..This will be a super test for the Grizzlies???...will they be able to score against a stingy Spartan defense and will the defense be able to contain the DLS offense???
Washington 4-2/5-4 at Logan 6-3.....Logan 44 Washington 13...The Colts finish off the regular schedule with a easy win over the Huskies...
GAMES OF INTEREST
American and Moreau Catholic are tied at 4-1 in the Mission Valley league, but American beat MC 27-20, so American is the league champ unless they loose to Newark on Friday night..
El Cerrito 3-1/4-5 at Hercules 1-3/6-3.....El Cerrito 39 Hercules 20....the gaucho's keep getting better and better and should roll over the titans..
San Leandro 4-0/5-4 at Tennyson 4-0/8-1.....San Leandro 28 Tennyson 13.....This is the show down fro first place and the crown for the West alameda Foothill League.
Piedmont 4-0/7-2 at Alameda 4-0/6-3.....Piedmont 32 Alameda 20....Again....This is also a show down for the league champ and crown for the West Alameda Shoreline League.
Sat. 11-7
Salesian 2-2/4-5 at St. Mary's of Albany 4-0/6-3 at 1:30 P.M......St, Mary's 41 Salesian 28.....this is one of those games that could go either way, but St. Mary's should prevail...
EBAL
California 4-2/6-3. at DLS 8-1.....DLS 41 California 10
Amador Valley 4-1/7-2 at Foothill 5-0/9-0.....Foothill 32 Amador Valley 28...this is a back yard battle and if AV wins, they are tied for first place with foothill, but AV will be the champ with the a win over Foothill.. this could be a hairy contest as there is a lot at stake.....
Granada 0-5/3-6 at Livermore 0-5/3-6.....Granada 38 Livermore 26....the winner stays out of the basement....
Monte vista 3-2/6-3 at San Ramon Valley 2-3/3-6.....Monte vista 41 San Ramon Valley 28...still another crosstown battle which the Mustangs have to win...If MV wins and Amador Valley looses, we have a tie for 2nd place, If AV wins they are the league champs and MV moves to 3rd place....
DVAL
CVC 4-0/8-1 at College Park 2-2/2-7.....CVC 49 CP 7.....The Eagle defense holds the line..

Concord 3-1/6-3 at Ygnacio Valley 1-3/3-6.....Concord 55 Ygnacio Valley 13.....The Minutemen improve to 7-3...
DFAL
Campolindo 5-0/8-1 at Acalanes 2-3/3-6.....Campolindo 44 Acalanes 19..the Cougars flexed their muscles last week with a shutout of Miramonte 37-0 and the don's are next.
LasLomas 0-5/1-8 at Alhambra 2-3/5-4......Alhambra 28 Las Lomas 21.....this is a must win for the /bulldogs to get a better spot in the playoffs and the Knights won't be easy...
Dublin 3-2/7-3 at Miramonte 4-1/8-1.....Miramonte 34 Dublin 28.....This could be a tough game for the Mat's as the face a team who also wants a better spotin the playoff.s
BVAL
Heritage 0-4/3-6 at Deer Valley 0-4/3-6......Deer Valley 37 Heritage 27.....The looser stays in the basement, and no body wants that...the wolverines can score and the Patriots can rise for the occasion, should be a real battle..
Liberty 2-2/4-5 at Freedom 2-2/5-4.....Freedom 38 Liberty 34....Another back yard battle...who wins get the bragging rights and the Liberty Bell.....
Sat. 11-7
Antioch 4-0/9-0 at Pittsburg 4-0/801.....Antioch 41 Pittsburg 38...this game could go either way and it come down to who can hold down the other team on defense or who can outscore the other...let the fire works begin and the team who scores last should win.....

Is CCS going to lose 2 of its 5 regional play-in spots?

I was looking at CIF bowl criteria-

http://www.cifstate.org/sports/football/2015_State_Football_Championships_Info_WEB.pdf

PLACEMENT INTO DIVISIONS

a. Only Section champions will be eligible except for Sections with an Open Division Championship (see below)

b. CIF Sections with an Open Division Championship will be allowed to replace one or more of their Section champions from another division with a team that participated in that Section’s Open Division. That Section’s Open Division team may only replace that Section’s Champion from the division in which they would have been slotted if they had not been selected for the Section’s Open Division. Sections with an Open Division choosing to utilize this provision must have a policy in place (adhering to the above language) which outlines the process the Section will use to replace champions from their Section divisions with non-champions from their Open Division.

QUALIFYING TO CIF STATE/REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Teams must compete and qualify through their respective CIF Section Championships to participate in CIF State/Regional Championships. Only Section Champions are eligible for selection to the CIF State/Regional Football Championship Bowl Games except as listed in A.(2)b. above.

Now CCS, which can be afforded 5 bowl play-in slots, will only have 3 bowl eligible playoff divisions. The Open division was gotten rid of for this year. In any event, since CCS will have only 3 bowl eligible divisions, will they lose 2 spots? CCS will attempt to send runner's up in a couple of the bowl eligible playoffs, but none seem to qualify as Open Divisions. This seems to point to CCS only obtaining 3 play-in bowl participants.

Question for Folsom fans

What kind of youth football programs do they have there and is it a strong program? Do they run the same offense or something similar to the high school. Seems like a pretty sophisticated passing offense for a youth football team, but the high school seems to run it so proficiently I was just wondering.

PLEASE post your best guess at posters TRUE identity HERE!!

Otherwise you are just cluttering up posts with your childish off topic banter.

Short of posting under your real name (Tony Wood) or an abbreviated version (awood1 = oldest of 3 brothers with AEW initials) it should be understood that you don't wish to reveal your identity to the public for whatever reason, none of which I give two $hits about when I come to read about HS football.

Some of you actually have fun, intelligent, amusing things to say about HS football but my "ignore" list is getting longer by the minute as I add the whack jobs that can't read the heading of a forum / board or post!! So here you go, a post JUST for you:

PLEASE post your best guess at posters TRUE identity HERE!!

Have at it ladies and jr. detectives!!

De La Salle 57 - James Logan 14

Special to The Chronicle

Anthony Sweeney accounted for 230 yards and five touchdowns, all in the first half when the host Spartans (8-1) took a 51-14 lead over the Colts (6-3).

Logan’s touchdowns came on kickoff returns — 99 yards from Ahmari Davis and 94 yards by Jamaria Young.

Sweeney ran for three scores and fired TD passes to Chris Vanderklugt of 27 and 17 yards, the latter on the final play of the first half when De La Salle held a 398 to negative-7-yard advantage.

Antoine Custer rushed for eight times for 93 yards and a score, and he returned a kickoff 76 yards for a TD.
