ROUND 9 PREDICTIONS..EBAL,DFAL,BVAL,DVAL..FREELANCE

The game of the week takes place at Campolindo as a Revamped Mat team coached by Jack Schram has reinvented the Mat offense and since then they have been racking up the scores....The 8-0 Mat.s invade a Campolindo 7-1 team that had a JV team move up to mold around the returners and the Cougars have been going full blast with only one loss to Napa's tough defense...
Another game to take notice is the Monte vista-California game.....so far in league play, the Grizzlies have had a hard time getting the offense to open up as well as the defense has been hard pressed as the EBAL is no league of Johnny-come-lately's...In the BVAL, Pittsburg travels to Liberty which could turn into another shot out.
FREELANCE
Logan 6-2 at DLS 7-1.....DLS 48 Logan 10.......Logan did pretty well at the Pittsburg Jamboree, but now the Colt's face a fine tuned defense who is really greedy about giving up TD.s..

Hillsdale Prevails over Cougars

by Terry Bernal San Mateo Daily Journal

It was last year when the Hillsdale Knights started sporting the ‘Fighting Knights’ across their football jerseys. Friday night, they earned that title.

Despite falling behind by two touchdowns at the start of the fourth quarter at raucous Half Moon Bay, the Fighting Knights stormed back to win the battle for first place in the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division with a 37-34 victory over the Cougars.

Amid a 34-34 tie, Hillsdale place kicker Josh Janakes drilled a 35-yard field goal with one second remaining in regulation to win it. With the victory, the Fighting Knights (4-0 in PAL Ocean, 7-1 overall) remain unbeaten in league play and take over sole possession of the PAL Ocean Division.

“That’s who we are,” Hillsdale head coach Mike Parodi said of the team’s moniker. “That’s who we need to be.”

The game seemed destined to go down to the wire after Hillsdale took a slight 13-12 lead into halftime. But Hillsdale quarterback Brett Wetteland was grace under fire down the stretch. The senior was 18-of-28 passing for 315 yards and three touchdown strikes, all to junior wide receiver Isaiah Cozzolino.

Half Moon Bay quarterback Gavin Tomberlin put on a passing clinic of his own. The left-handed sophomore threw for 207 yards and five TDs, all to senior wide receiver Pablo Gutierrez. In fact, Tomberlin had four straight completions spanning from the second quarter to the fourth, all for touchdown strikes to Gutierrez of 18, 10, 50 and 26 yards.

Tomberlin’s 26-yard strike on a timing pattern up the sideline gave Half Moon Bay a 34-20 lead with 10:26 remaining in the game. But the savvy Wetteland answered the call, leading three straight scoring drives, going 8 for 10 in the fourth quarter.

“We were down two (touchdowns),” Cozzolino said. “You think he’d break, but no way. He brought us back— him and [senior guard Michael Mounga].”

Mounga was a blocking force to opened rushing lanes for senior tailback Cameron Taylor and sophomore Nick Hulman, who were essential to balancing the attack. Taylor had a typical night by his standards, rushing 18 times for 129 yards and two touchdowns. But he also had a 23-yard reception to open Hillsdale’s initial fourth quarter drive before Hulman reeled off runs of 9, 2 and 5 yards.

Then Wetteland connected with Cozzolino on a fly pattern over the middle for a 26-yard touchdown; and Janakes hammered the extra point home to make it 34-27.

Half Moon Bay (3-1, 7-1) didn’t go quietly on the following possession, driving to the Hillsdale 23-yard line and looking to put the game away. But on second-and-9, senior linebacker Siua Etu got into the backfield to stuff a sweep play for a 5-yard loss. Then back-to-back incompletions turned the ball over on downs, giving the Knights possession at the own 28-yard line with 3:27 remaining.

Taylor sparked the game-tying drive with a 6-yard run, then he caught a 7-yard pass from Wetteland to gain a first down. The Knights’ next first down would be much more dramatic, however. Faced with a fourth-and-2 from the Cougars’ 49, Wetteland shuffled right and used an option pitch to Taylor for a 10-yard gain. Two plays later, Cozzolino sprinted up the right sideline to catch a perfect spiral from Wettleland in stride.

“He got it there and it was my job to bring it back down,” Cozzolino said.

With 1:23 remaining, Hillsdale initially lined up to attempt a two-point conversion. But when a false start penalty marched the Knights back five yards, they turned to Janakes to tie it with an extra point at 34-34.

Hillsdale’s defense then expedited a quick change of possession, allowing the Cougars to run just a minute off the clock on a three-and-out. Taylor had a big defensive play as Half Moon Bay took a shot at Gutierrez downfield on first down, but Taylor caught up with the speedy senior to break up the pass. Etu then dropped Tomberlin for a sack on second down. Two plays later, Half Moon Bay punted and the Knights took over at the Cougars’ 44.

Parodi said, with :21.4 seconds remaining, his strategy from the drive’s opening play was to get into field goal range.

“With no timeouts, it’s how close can we get,” Parodi said. “Time was more important than yards. You’ve just got to make common sense plays and it works out.”

Wettleland opened with a creative 5-yard pass underneath to Nate Shani. Then he hit Cozzolino for a 14-yard gain. With :10 seconds remaining, Wettleland found sophomore Joey Sabel at the 18-yard line. That set up Janakes’ game-winner.

“I’m tore up,” Tomberlin said. “I’m mad. But I’m trying to keep my teams’ heads high and move on to The King’s Academy. Every team losses.”

For the Knights — who trailed 6-0 at the end of the first quarter — it was a matter of generating a steady momentum towards a spectacular finish.

“We didn’t start too well as a team,” Parodi said. “Half Moon Bay — hats off to them — they played a great game. We came out a little excited, a little over-amped, and were trying to get our bearing straight. … They got us a couple times in that third quarter, and then we got it going in the fourth quarter.”

What was thought to be an exciting shootout rapidly turned into a route as Campolindo took the opening kickoff
by Kannah Cruikshank and raced 98 yards that was the beginning of the end, .Six minutes later, Matthew Blair booted a FG and it was 10-0....What made it so tough for Miramonte was that big offense and defensive line kept the Miramonte QB on the run and he had 27 attempts and hit only 10 and the ground game had its moments...To make things worse, Miramonte never threaten and even the running game struggled, in the early going, there were runs of 12 and 24 yards and late in the game there was a 12,13 and a 15 yarder, but none made any difference....The likes of the cougar defense led by Sterling Strother, Wyatt McNeil, Joey Berzins, kept the Miramonte offense off balance...in the mean time, Jacob Westphal engineered the offense and running backs Matthew Ringguist and Niki Moore spearheaded the running game...There was nothing that the Mat's tried to do to turn the game around that would work....Now Campolindo missed one FG and Miramonte had a forth and five and the play backfired and it led to a 32 yard drive that helped make the score at half 23-0...One other thing Miramonte attempted to do was side line passes and all six failed.
For Miramonte, they had 12 first downs, four penalties for 35 yards, punted twoicem never fumbled but were intercepted three times by circus catches...the ground game netted 146 yards on 26 carries and 95 yards through the air on 27 tries and only 10 completions.
For campolindo, the ground game gained 187 yards on 34 carries and went to the air 14 times and hit seven for 92 yards...the cougars racked up 11 first downs, had five penalties for 40 yards, punted twice and never fumbled plus three timely interceptions that were circus catches...

St. Mary's-Stockton @ Lincoln-Stockton for TCAL league Championship

Wow! Lincoln of Stockton surprised me tonight with guns blazing in a shootout with Tracy. Problem was Tracy ran out of bullets. Late fumble by Tracy that Lincoln turned into a score sealed the game for the Trojans of Stockton. Squeaking by the other TCAL teams and with a sound victory over Tracy, Lincoln will now host next week's game vs St. Mary's for the TCAL championship with both teams undefeated in league. It doesn't get any better than this.

Lincoln-Stockton has not beaten St. Mary's-Stockton in years, since 2005 (11 straight losses). Could this be the year the Trojans find redemption? Will St. Mary's lose and fall back into D2 for playoffs? Or will the streak continue and St. Mary's find themselves competing again in D1 for playoffs (since last won SJS D1 section in 2008)? We will find out next week on 11/06/15. If this game is not by chance NorCal Pick'ems Game of the Week for Week 10, it definitely belongs on the list.

Both St. Mary's and Lincoln bring a ton of offense to the field. St. Mary's defense which was questionable early on, has improved relative to its TCAL competition outscoring its TCAL opponents by an average of 30.25 points per game. Lincoln, although defeating Tracy by the same margin (21) St. Mary's did, has only outscored it TCAL opponents by an average of 8.5 points per game with the Tracy game attributing to increasing this average (before Tracy game it was 4.3 points per game). Lincoln definitely has turned it up with their win vs Tracy and appear amped up and eager to host the Rams for redemption on their home field. St. Mary's on the other hand started it's game tonight vs Lodi very flat (similar to games early on in the season). But, eventually, St. Mary's overwhelmed the TCAL last place Lodi Flames. This game between Lincoln and St. Mary's is always a heated rivalry. I believe Lincoln will be ready for this game. I challenge my Rams to step it up and be even more ready and go into this game with anticipation that the Trojans will be giving all they have. The Rams should not overlook the Trojans despite the winning streak and dominance it has had recently over the Trojans. This will not be an easy game! Lincoln does have weapons on offense. St. Mary's will not be able to afford to make mistakes like they did tonight early on versus Lodi. Spanos Stadium will be rocking on 11/06/15. Stay tuned!

Note: Central Catholic vs Oakdale probably deserves the Game of the Week honors IMHO, both undefeated battling for the VOL league championship.

Vallejo Football: What a Tragedy

Man, what happened to Vallejo Football? Make me want to say a prayer. Used to go to their games when I lived there (but always sat on the side when my beloved Vacaville Bulldogs came to town). I remember Corbus Field. Always intense when they play Hogan. Miss watching their famous color guard band would perform. Games wud always be intense when Vacaville, Napa & Fairfield came there and vice versa. Hopefully they may find their winning ways again. Prayerfully too.....

Palma class of 2017 football player receives offer from Fresno State

Junior Center/OG/DT Drew Dahlman (2017) receives his fist offer from Fresno State University Dogs. This will be the first of many offers in my opinion. Las Vegas is also interested, and both his parents are legacy Stanford University athletes.

His father Chris Dahlman, former Stanford and SF 49er Center is the line coach at Palma and also coached the o-line at Stanford and Atlanta Falcons. Drew, a junior, is a natural center with great technique and strength.

Arizona Senior Fall Classic: Matt Manning Stands Out on Day 3

Matt Manning (Sheldon High, Sacramento) showed off impressive stuff on Saturday night, and he has a chance to be an early draft pick in next June’s draft. In one of the better performances of the Arizona Senior Fall Classic, Manning struck out eight batters, walked three, and allowed a double in three innings.

Manning is the son of former NBA player Rich Manning, and while Matt isn’t quite the 6-foot-11 that his father was, he has plenty of size. He’s listed at 6-foot-7, 185 pounds, and he has long legs and a high waist, as well as coathanger shoulders that could pack on good weight as he matures.

On Saturday, Manning’s fastball sat from 91-94 mph and touched 95 a handful of times in his three-inning cameo. The pitch showed late life as it entered the zone, with explosive finish and sink or arm-side run. When Manning located it down in the strike zone, his fastball was all but unhittable, especially at the high school level.

Manning’s second pitch is his curveball, which has a long way to go, but has exciting upside, thanks to Manning’s ability to generate plus spin. He lost his arm slot on his curveball at times on Saturday, but the pitch consistently showed power break. When Manning was on top of and behind the pitch, it broke with 11-to-5 shape and plus depth.

Manning begins his delivery with a stride towards the righthanded batter’s box, and finishes his delivery with his front side slightly closed off. His arm action starts with a deep wrap in the back, and there’s enough force back there to cause his momentum to reverse itself as Manning’s shoulder hits the borderline of hyperextension. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot with outstanding arm speed, and he finishes across his body.

The timing and tempo of Manning’s delivery is still a work in progress. The righthander has only been pitching for a little over a year. Manning is also a prolific basketball player, a shooting guard that could be a Division 1 prospect, though his future is clearly on the mound.
