Cal Stars lost to Cal Storm (79-61) in the opener of the the Nike Nationals. They play Michigan Crossover later today.

I think this is the first loss for Cal Stars overall and definitely their first loss in EYBL action.

Brian Hamilton has left Concord to become the offensive quality control coach at Cal. The rest of the staff remains together with Mark Bywater taking over as HC.

John Smoltz took time in his Hall of Fame speech to take about young pitchers and the rise in arm injuries.

“Before I hand it over to next inductee, I’d be remiss if I did not talk about Tommy John. I’ve been given an opportunity as one of the only players, the only one right now, to be inducted into the Hall of Fame with Tommy John Surgery. It’s an epidemic. It’s something that is affecting our game. It’s something that I thought would cost me my career, but thanks to Dr. James Andrews and all those before him, performing the surgery with such precision has caused it to be almost a false-read, like a band-aid you put on your arm.

I want to encourage the families and parents that are out there that this is not normal to have a surgery at 14 and 15 years old. That you have time, that baseball is not a year-round sport. That you have an opportunity to be athletic and play other sports. Don’t let the institutions that are out there running before you guaranteeing scholarship dollars and signing bonuses that this is the way….

I want to encourage you, if nothing else, know that your children’s passion and desire to play baseball is something that they can do without a competitive pitch. Every throw a kid makes today is a competitive pitch. They don’t go outside, they don’t have fun, they don’t throw enough — but they’re competing and maxing out too hard, too early, and that’s why we’re having these problems. Please, take care of those great future arms.”

Thoughts?

Just curious for those who have experience doing so. There's a fair amount of schools who go out of state every year but how does that happen? Do schools literally call around looking for schools to schedule games against or do you just notify the state that you're willing to host / travel and just have them work out the kinks? Does a host school need to helf cover expenses of a traveling team?

Starting August 5th, 2015, the Oakland Rebels Black and the newly formed Oakland Rebels Silver traveling teams will be conducting their off-season workouts/Open run sessions. This is in preparation for the 2016 AAU season. We are looking for incoming 5th graders (Class of 2023). However, advanced 4th graders are also welcome. The formation of the Silver team has opened spots on both teams (4 on the Black and 5 on the Silver). We are looking for Point Guards and Shooters. Last season, the 10U Black team played a very competitive schedule (the Adidas President's Day Tournament in Portland, NOLA Super 60 in New Orleans, The So. Cal Cavs Tournament in Anaheim, The Rose City Showcase in Portland, The AAU Nationals in Clarksville, TN and The Bigfoot Classic in Las Vegas). Next season we will be attending the King James Shooting Stars Classic in Akron, OH, the Prestigious Maryland Invitational Tournament, as well as the 2016 AAU Nationals. 2 years in a row that highly touted Norcal guys entered the draft early and went undrafted (Jabari Brown). And it looks like both will end up playing in the NBA regardless. Good for them. Nothing is easy in this world. Having to work for it makes it that much sweeter.
