Just wondering about who will play in the Open Division in NorCal this year. Any thoughts on the list below or others who will be considered?

1. Bishop O'Dowd: Win or lose NCS D-3 title

2. Folsom: They qualify if they win the SJS D-1 section title

3. Monte Vista/De LaSalle winner: Both teams are qualifiers

4. El Cerrito: Provided they win NCS D-2, which they should

5. Serra: Provided they win CCS title

6. Modesto Christian/Sacramento winner: Provided Sacramento is a qualifier (not sure)

Other considerations

1. Monte Vista/De LaSalle loser: May be left in D-1 tournament, but could go Open as they qualify

2. Moreau Catholic: If they beat O' Dowd, they go Open for sure. If they don't, I do not believe they are a qualifier

3. Campolindo: Has the resume to advance and is a qualifier

4. Sheldon: I do not believe they are a qualifier even if they win the D-1 SJS title

5. St. Francis: I do not believe they are a qualifier even if they win the CCS title

Revisiting the issue of whether they should shrink the field a bit in section and Norcal playoffs.

In North Coast Section we started as usual with 16 teams in each division. The final four in each division:

1 = 1, 2, 3, 4 seeds

2 = 1, 2, 3, 13 seeds

3 = 1, 2, 3, 4 seeds

4 = 1, 2, 3, 4 seeds

5 = 1, 2, 3 , 5 seeds

Kudos to Novato for making it to the D2 final 4, but they did get blown out by 50 in the semi-final.

8 teams per division in section, and 2 teams per division for Norcal would be plenty.

In an effort to boost offense, the Division I Baseball Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to switch from the raised-seam baseball currently used during the NCAA tournament to a flat-seamed ball, starting in 2015. Conferences won't be required to use the flat-seamed ball during the regular season, but all of them figure to adopt the new ball in 2015 in order to prepare for the postseason.

My son wants to go to this event. Any opinions on it? My take from reading up online is that it's probably not a great opportunity to get in front of college coaches, but could be a good way to get experience before attending higher-level camps and showcases. It also looks like means to getting an unbiased read on a player from an experienced judge of baseball talent. But if that's all you want there are probably cheaper ways of going about it.

Mitty head coach Bill Hutton announced his upcoming retirement following the 2015 season.

He will be replaced by Brian Yocke, the current Mitty softball coach.

SHC will play for the CCS D-III title vs. Aptos on Saturday, March 7th at Independence HS at 8:00pm.

Irish beat Mills 71-57. Mills made a lot of 3-balls to keep it close. Irish still couldn't play defense. I didn't see the two frosh on the varsity but for this game, Darrell Barbour decided to start Romello Dunbar. For some reason Ramzi Carter, Jr., only played a few minutes in the first quarter and sat down the rest of the game. Alfred Hollins had 25 points and David Parsons had 20.

SHC, on the second-half momentum of a 27-4 run, beat St. Ignatius 53-50. Irish had a 51-41 lead in the 4th.

Good tuneup for both teams as they enter NorCals next week. Palma has a promising team led by their underclassmen pg and center. Crusader D solid once again, with Riordan O consisting of slashes to the hoop, put backs and points off steals. Still no consistent outside shooting, but Palma man D forced the Crusaders to dribble drive.

El Cerrito is fast athletic deep and high flying vs tough defense and steady shooting of Montgomery
Don't like this matchup for Ec upset alert upset alert!!! Ec weakness is teams with a big man and strong zone defense Monty just might get it done.Monty's weakness is handling full court press which is El Cerrito's bread and butter.If Ec can pull the bigman from underneath the basket on defense they should win if not it will be a long night for Ec.

The game of the tournament I think this is closer than most people think. These teams kinda mirror one another these kids all know each other but the difference is the big man Rabb. Moreau I think MC will stay close and give Odowd it's best challenge of all the teams in the area but Odowd wins by 10.I like Moreau as 2nd best team in the NCS.

Enterprise High School in Redding is looking for 2-3 teams for their tourney held after Christmas and before New Year's. We would prefer Division 1-2-3 teams. As of now we have 3 division 3 teams and 2 D4 teams. We will house the out of town teams, give all teams t-shirts, drinks after games, hospitality room for coaches, coaches lunch on the second day of tourney, golf for coaches (weather permitting), and a pizza feed for all the players and coaches. Film from your games will be loaded onto HUDL or a DVD will be given to the teams. Very well run tourney and also a catered coaches social on Day two after the games.
