The Zac Jarzynka Memorial Ironman Tournament, a nationally recognized high school wrestling tournament held annually at Oviedo High School in Oviedo, Florida will take place this upcoming season on 28-29 Dec 2009. This is an individually bracketed tournament of 32 teams from across the United States.

This tourney, in its first seven years has included competing teams from OH, PA, OK, CA, MO, NY, TX, VA, TN, AL, SC, LA, GA and FL.

The Zac Jarzynka high school tournament has been ranked as one of the top tournaments in the nation by W.I.N. Magazine in the past several years. Additionally, in the first seven editions of this tourney, over $30,000 in scholarship money has been awarded, and seniors from all teams competing are eligible to receive scholarships.

Jesuit Rugby well represented on Team USA and Cal

A big kudos to Jesuit Rugby program for having the most players from one high school playing Team USA National teams.

USA Eagles:
Blaine Scully- UCLA/Cal
Louis Stanfill- Cal grad
Joe Welch- Cal grad

USA All-Americans:
Eric Fry- Cal
Colin Hawley- Cal
Paul Jessman- Cal
Blaine Scully- UCLA/CAl
Joe Welch- Cal grad
Louis Stanfill- Cal grad
Matt Leatherby- St. Mary's (Honorable Mention)

In addition, Jesuit has more players (13) than any other high school on the perennial national champion Cal Rugby team.

Cosumnes Oaks (Elk Grove) Girls varsity teams

Cosumnes Oaks is the newest high school to open (this year) in the Elk Grove Unified School District. It is my understanding that they only have a freshman and soph class which usually means they do not field an varsity teams, right? Apparently they do have a girls varsity softball and soccer teams though. I was just wondering how can they have these two varsity teams, but no others?

King of the Mat 2009

Coaches,

Hello, my name is Danny Crotts and I’m the Head Wrestling Coach at North Davidson Senior High School in Lexington, North Carolina. I am writing today to invite you and your team to our big wrestling tournament, King of the Mat. This is a 32 man bracket, double elimination, placing the top 8 in each weight class. This is a very good tournament. In 2008, we had teams from 6 different states, Wisconsin, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Virginia and North Carolina in attendance. I would love to increase our out of state teams to the event to having 10 states represented if at all possible. I have already received interest from Rhode Island and Pennsylvania for this year as new additions.

I will take the first 40 teams that would like to be in the tournament. I will then create a wait list for teams that respond after I get 40 for when the inevitable happens and teams have to back out for one reason or another. We try our best to have full 32 man brackets and take the extra teams to fill each weight class bracket. If we have to do “pig-tails” for a weight class, those matches will be single elimination. We have tried in previous years to place all kids in a weight class and then this past year placing the top 16 in a weight class. With space limitations, this is just not possible (We can only run 6 mats and have enough seating for everyone) so we will place only the top 8 in each weight class this year. That is a 2 match guarantee for all wrestlers, unless of course they are involved in a pigtail match.

To give you an idea of how good of competition this tournament has, of the 14 champions for 2008, they had a total of 18 pins for the entire tournament.

Managing

Im looking for some good team managers in the area. Jesuit had a stud a couple years ago named Adam McLaughlin when they ran train in basketball. He filmed free hand. Wow. I don't even think there manager this year did that. Probably why they didn't make playoffs. But I'm looking for a beast that's just as cool as Adam.

I have heard there are some interested: Amber, Carl, Jill, Bethanie, Khakha, and Jason. If you guys get this message contact me.

Thanks.

WHS Girls Soccer

Congrats. to WHS girls varsity soccer posting a 2-0 win against Newark. Great job by Huskie goalie Rebecca Oliphant who recorded her first complete game shut-out. Maybe thier record would be better if she had played more complete games. Keep up the good work.

WCAL Soccer - Bells 4, SHC 3

I want to know if the Bells are that bad giving-up 3 goals (that usually takes a season) or has SHC improved so much to score so much on Bellarmine?

SHC also beat South City 2-0 and clobbered Riordan 8-0.

UPDATE: SHC plays Bellarmine in today's WCAL playoffs. Riordan gave up 126 goals on the season.

Updated Information for Tournaments at North Davidson for 2008-09

Coaches,

Hello, my name is Danny Crotts and I’m the head wrestling coach at North Davidson Senior High in Lexington, North Carolina. I hope that your wrestling season was a successful one. I am writing to you today to let you know about the tournaments we will be hosting at North Davidson Senior High for the 2008-09 season. We host two tournaments, one dual tournament and one individual tournament. Here is a little information about each tournament:

Black Knight Duals - Saturday December 6, 2008. 16 Teams, Guarantee 5 Dual Matches. We will use two gyms for this tournament and have 4 mats running at one time. We will split teams up into 4 pools based on the following seeding criteria. You may score 1 wrestler per weight class. State Placers (1st -6th Place) score 6 points. State Qualifiers (States that place 7th and 8th will be recognized as Qualifiers and not Placers) score 4 points and returning Varsity starters (but not a State Place/Qualifier) score 2 points. You can only score one of those three ways. So if you were a returning Varsity starter and you placed 2nd at States, you would only score 6 points, not 8. Seeds for each pool are as follows: Pool A (1,8,9,16), Pool B (2,7,10,15), Pool C (3,6,11,14) and Pool D (4,5,12,13). We will cross pool after pool play has completed for placement matches. All teams that are 3-0 will wrestle for places 1-4, all teams that are 2-1 will wrestle for places 5-8, all teams that are 1-2 will wrestle for places 9-12 and all teams that are 0-3 will wrestle for places 13-16. In the cross pool, Pool A will wrestle Pool D and Pool B will wrestle Pool C and then winners against winners and losers against losers.

Teams that attended last season: Parkland, Davie County, Green Hope, Morehead, Lake Norman, Knightdale, East Davidson, Olympic, Fayetteville 71st, Carson, West Charlotte and North Davidson from North Carolina and from Virginia we had Kellam, Magna Vista and Centreville. Kellam brought a “B” team down as well for the tournament. The top 4 teams were Parkland, Kellam “A”, Green Hope and Davie County.

UPDATED TEAMS!

Black Knight Duals Teams

North Carolina

Davie County - 2007/08 4A State Dual Runner-ups, 2007/08 3rd Place State Individual Tournament - 4th Place BK Duals 2007/08
Morehead - 2007/08 3A State Dual & State Individual Runner-Ups, 6th Place BK Duals 2007/08
North Davidson
East Davidson
Fay. 71st
AL Brown
JM Robinson - Double checking b/c of County Tournament

South Carolina

Lexington - 6th Place AAAA State Individual Tournament

King of the Mat ? Monday December 22 and Tuesday December 23, 2008. 32 Teams (May be more but want to have 32 man brackets for each weight class). We use 2 gyms and 8 mats for the duration of the tournament. We will do the Finals on one mat in the main gym when all the other place matches have been wrestled.

This is not the usual Double elimination tournament. What we did last year was that we tried to place all the way back for each place that we had in a weight class. This way, kids will not just go 0-1 or 0-2 and be done for two days; they continued to get some mat experience. We will do a double elimination from the top 8 placers and then a single elimination (until the top 8 has been established for 9-16th place matches then double like a standard tournament) and place the top 16 for the whole tournament. You will have to lose three times to be eliminated from the tournament (after the 2nd loss, you no longer score team points it is just matches for you). I can guarantee each of your wrestlers 3 matches at the minimum for the tournament.

We will seed as follows:
1) State placers (during ANY season, with most recent having preference)
2) State qualifiers (during ANY season, with most recent having preference)
3) The 2008-2009 record based on at least 10 matches

We had 27 teams last year, and on Day One, we were all gone by 4:30 PM and some kids had already wrestled their five match limit. For Day Two, the Finals concluded before 8 PM. We run a pretty good/quick tournament!

Spots are filling up fast....

Piedmont volleyball is a joke, TURNS DOWN NCS

My sister comes home today and told me that more than half her team voted to not go to NCS because they had homework and tests. My sister and 3 other girls were the only people who wanted to accept their playoff seed. What has sports come to in the past couple years, i am embarrassed to have ever attended Piedmont HS, and played football there. So many 4 letter words could be used to describe how i feel about most of that team. vent...
