NorCal Open thoughts

One assumption: The North and South Opens will have equal numbers of teams. If they don't, given the fact there are more schools in the South, it would seem reasonable that if either area had more teams in the Open, it would be the South.

First question: Clovis West. A very strong team with a win over Folsom that could go North or South.

I think the answer to that lies in the South, which has four strong teams and then a serious dropoff.

Sierra Canyon, La Jolla Country Day, Etiwanda and Mater Dei are all clear Open teams. After that, though, there are issues. The two teams fourth and fifth in the SoCal coaches' poll are Santiago and Sage Hill, with 15 losses between them and no wins over top teams. The second best team in San Diego is Westview, which isn't even winning its league. LA City's Westchester is 24-1, but lost to Bonita Vista and has played no one.

So if the goal is to only have teams in the Open that have a chance to win, it seems like there are only four SoCal teams that qualify -- which is why I think Clovis West goes South, to make five. (The sixth spot is still a problem, but Westchester wouldn't be a bad call if they finish with one loss.)

Put Clovis West in the South, then.

Does that work for the North? Yes, because then there are six solid candidates:

Piedmont, Mitty, St. Mary's of Stockton, Folsom, Oakland Tech and the North Coast Section champion.

Of course you could add the CCS and NCS runner-ups to get to a solid eight, but then NorCal has two more teams in the Open, and two fewer quality teams in the lower brackets than SoCal. This way, the North is all section champs except either Folsom or SMS.

If you go seven and SHC is the CCS runner-up, it depends on who wins NCS and who's second. The wins over Carondelet, Acalanes and SRV would make SHC the seventh, but if Salesian finished second in NCS, it would go to Salesian.

To get to seven in SoCal, you're adding a seven-loss team or Westview or maybe Clovis (which has two bad losses).

WBAL Foothill

For the first time in some time the WBAL's top division should be competitive.

While it has struggled so far, Pinewood, the long reigning champ, will be a much different (and better) team in a couple of days when Ava Uhrich becomes eligible.

Menlo comes off of a D4 CCS title and a D2 state quarterfinal last year. They lost quite a bit to graduation, but have a dynamic duo in sophomores Karen Xin and Ricki Liu. Menlo is 5-1 on the young season.

Crystal Springs (a state quarter finalist last year in D5) returned everyone, and is off to a 9-1 start, including an impressive tourney title down in Santa Cruz. They play smothering defense.

ND Belmont is likewise 9-1 with a senior-laden squad led by point guard Abby Co.

Priory was hit hard by graduation, but Coach Buck reloaded with several talented freshmen. They're 5-2.

Harker is making its debut in the upper division after a terrific run (25-3) last season. But their top scorer from that team, Anjali Yella, is not playing this season which will make things tougher for them.

Folsom @ Del Oro

Boys-girls doubleheader…. with a JV boys bonus, which Folsom won by 10.

I think I may have chomped on the “doubleheader” part of the schedule…. Somehow didn’t notice that the Folsom girls won the first meeting with Del Oro by almost 60 points….

Bad decisions will happen when one is desperate for some Friday hoops when the two top leagues near me have the night off…

Hopefully, this one will be more competitve.

Campo @ Northgate

Freshmen game has been unusual…. Camppo was down 31-19 at the half (Northgate nailed their first 6 shots of the game, including a couple 3’s),,, But the Cougs turned thing around bigtime in the 3rd quarter, hanging up a 28-6 score to make it 47-37 Cougs heading into the final stanza.

Can’t remember the last time a freshman team had a 28-point quarter against a legit opponent.

This is just the opposite of the first meeting of NG and Campo frosh, where the Broncos came from a 13-point halftime deficit to get a 1-point win over the Cougs.

Right now, it’s 53-43 Cougs, 5:18 left.

Pretty interesting stuff for a frosh game…

Cougs put ‘em away, 62-45…. One of the more astounding frosh turnarounds I’ve ever seen in my 50+ years of attending hoops.

Anyway…. Hopefully, we’ll get a full game in the JV’s, Northgate forfeiting at halftime last time.

Menlo High School CCS Champs and #1 team in the PAL

Menlo High School won its first CCS Football Championship ever and is now the king of the PAL.

I used to mistake this school for the public with the similar name but it is clear this program is on another level. Back to back years in the championship game and somehow this year they were able to get it done.

It is great to see these schools that have all of the odds stacked against them find a way to rise up and overcome.

Campo @ Acalanes

Just watched the Cougs frosh turn a game that had been close after one quarter into a runaway win, 48-31.

JV’s in a bit…. I believe the Campo JV’s have just one losss, that being to De La Salle…. Not all the games are up on Maxpreps, so take that with a grain of salt…. Maxpreps has Acalanes JV at 7-7..

Meanwhile, waiting in the wings are the varsity teams…. Campo’s varsity is 13-6 while facing a difficult schedule, like usual…. Aca is 11-7 against a somewhat weaker slate.

Cougs lost to St. Mary’s last time out in Stockton, a game I missed due to being at St. Mary’s of Moraga, watching the Gaels and Aidan Mahaney take care of Santa Clara…
