NorCal 2023 Open Candidates

Battle tested teams that have separated themselves with clutch free throws, buzzer beating 3 pointers, rim rattling dunks, full court pressing, traps and timely play are bearing Open possibilities.
If we analyze each section and then look at the Best overall Northern California 8 teams that might be selected from the C.I.F., we can start projecting what teams are likely to be selected. Each section can place 4 teams, granted some listed will win league and perhaps the loser will be placed in Divisional playoffs. I see this year as one of the few years where 8 teams should be selected to the 8-team bracket. if the C.I.F. chooses to add Central to So-Cal then it might be only 7 team Open bracket. When comes to the Open who do you think will be the top 8 teams selected from the listed sections, if I missed a school you think is worthy then add them to your list.

2022-2023 Alumnae Watch

Going to post some updates throughout the college season.

California beat Cal State Northridge 86-56. Peanut Tuitele (Pleasant Valley) had a team high nine rebounds. Karisma Ortiz (Mitty) had six points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals.

Washington beat Utah Tech 87-74. Hailey Van Dyke (Campolindo) had 15 points and five rebounds. Elle Ladine (Pinewood) had seven points, four rebounds and five assists in her college debut.

St. Mary's beat Nevada 67-58 behind 14 points and 17 rebounds from Ali Bamberger (Carondelet). Clair Steele (Miramonte) added 12 points. For Nevada, Lexie Givens (Alameda) went for nine points and eight rebounds.

In SJS: Christian Brothers No Longer Undefeated

In a strange defensive, low scoring game, Vista del Lago (12-4) defeats Christian Brothers (14-1), 34-29. Christian Brothers (CBS) suffers its first loss of the season.

CBS is ranked #3 in the Sacramento area by the Sacramento Bee newspaper, primarily due to its soft schedule strength.

Vista del Lago's (VDL) four losses this season came from McClatchy (SacBee #4), Whitney, Oak Ridge, and Colfax -- all strong Sacramento power teams, which is reflected in VDL's much stronger "strength of schedule" of 14.0 versus CBS' strength of schedule of only 8.8.

Monterey Trail beats Laguna Creek 70-60

Monterey Trail went on a 11-0 run in the third and outscored Laguna Creek 20-8 overall in the third quarter for a 70-60 home win. Laguna Creek led 9-5 after the first quarter and 27-25 at the half.

The game shifted with the play of Damarion Vann-Kelly in the third quarter. Unoffically, Kentrell Kelly had 19 points, Brandon Gibson had 13 points and Varick Lewis had 14 points and at least four assists.

On my notes, KJ Ramey had 22 points to lead Laguna Creek. Dante Wells finished with 18. Ja'len Flenory brought energy and made a couple of key shots in the fourth quarter.

With this result, Monterey Trail has beaten Laguna Creek which beat Grant which beat Monterey Trail.

2022-2023 Alumni Watch

Going to try and keep a running thread of some of the standout performances from NorCal players in College Basketball this season. @kiddman32 already noted the excellent debut of Aidan Mahaney for St. Mary's.

Mike Mitchell (Mitty) had 14 points and eight assists in Pepperdine's win over Rice.

In San Diego State's win over Cal State Fullerton, Darrion Trammell (St. Ignatius) had 18 points and three steals and Keshad Johsnon (San Leandro) had four points and three rebounds.

San Francisco beat Texas Southern 90-77 behind 17 points, four rebounds and three assists from Tyrell Roberts (Woodcreek). Isaiah Hawthorne (Tracy) had 10 points and six rebounds in 17 minutes.
